This is my first ever comment on RUclips and I just want to tell you that this is a video with the quality of a person with 675k subscribers, not 675. Very interesting and informative. Keep up the great work!
Re-watching the series I found very interesting how the 'racism' in the Harry Potter world is portraited. It shows how muggle-born are oppressed by being called mudbloods and latter in the series by fascist oppression. Following your argument about the series questioning things done by the antagonist but not when done by the 'good side'; I think is interesting how it does not question racism previous to Voldemort's uprise, other than the term mudblood or that some people think they are better than others. The point I am trying to make is, as you said, those things existed previously but are not shown as a bad thing. The racism in Harry Potter world is not systematic nor problematic. The anti-racist message in Harry Potter fails to show racism in the contemporary world. Also, loved the video. I like a lot everything you do! Hope you can continue making it. (I know that the series was written in the '90s and the conversation about racism has evolved a lot since then, I just think is interesting how racism was/is seen)
You hit the nail right on the head there with “the anti-racist message in Harry Potter fails to show racism in the contemporary world”. That’s exactly it. The power of the franchise’s nostalgia is that it makes us yearn for the “pre-Voldemort” wizarding world - which, while not framed as perfect, still references a “good old days” parallel to our world. When the series shows the defeat of Voldemort as the just end of suffering, it ignores the more complex injustices in the wizard world that so often reflect our own societies problems. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and leave such a thoughtful comment!
I saw a tumblr post that was a very insightful analysis/critique of the harry potter (book) series, that you touched upon briefly with the Dumbledore and education example. Basically, the story cherry picks in which cases it will uphold the morals it teaches in other sections. Mudbloods should be equal to Pureblood wizards, but if it's vice-versa (like Filch) you're left out. And like you also mentioned, harry stands up against corruption and authoritarianism in the ministry, but will gladly receive the extra house points from his headmaster that are given for absolutely ridiculous reasons (also corruption). I love how this apparently even seeped into the architecture and environments of the film series, you've really made a unique video here I dare say.
Loved the breadth of scope covering architecture, politics, symbolism in film and its relevance to popular culture. Intelligently executed to show how popular film is a type of catharsis, helping us to experience the current social and political tensions we all feel but are helpless to eloquently express. Thanks for showing how film, a modern form of storytelling, uses a visual language incorporating cultural signposts we've all unconsciously absorbed the meanings of.
Thank you for such a thoughtful review Jason! I’m so glad you enjoyed the scope of mediums I investigated here - I’m very passionate about multi-disciplinary approaches to history and visual culture.
Wow, you don't say huh? You mean to tell me that there are things in movies that we are meant to understand only because the movie is set in our own culture? Wow, I mean, talk about going around your elbow to scratch your butt. Is this supposed to new and insightful information, or have you never watched any movies from outside of the UK and US?
@@MaryMcGillivray You are not saying any new or profound here. You are literally just applying the nonsense you learned at your woke college to a masterpiece of the English language and acting as if you have discovered a new way of looking at the series.
I am so grateful that Tiffany ferg mentioned your channel, this video is so incredibly well put together and flows so beautiful. Thank you for putting so much effort into this!!! 💌
Wow, came here from Julian O'shea. DId not know what to expect at all but this was such a well put together, incredibly informative, interesting and entertaining video. Looking forward to your continued success making content
Brilliant. The caricature of the post-war redistribution of wealth and sudden mass availability of education that the Dursley family represents has always bothered me. Like you say, the films and books don't establish Harry as a person inherently entitled to dignity, love, safety and respect, but rather he gets those things when he suddenly gains entry to an aristocratic class by virtue of his birth, and the wealth and social status of his parents. Not that we ever escaped it, but I feel like we're regressing to a more explicit model of the rulers and the ruled and these films certainly work with that!
Such good points. The strengths of the series lie (in my view) more in their challenging of social/interpersonal struggles (ideas about outcasts, bullying, finding strength and courage) but it fails immensely to address economic struggles in a satisfying way. Harry is a bit of a Cinderella type allegory of the pure of heart being gifted a better life - an unrealistic trope.
@@MaryMcGillivray It is not an unrealistic trope at all. If you choose to lead a life of crime and abuse of others, you will have crimes done unto you and people will abuse you back, but if you choose to be a good person and help others and not be a selfish first world brainwashed person who is reading into a children's book for post modern antiracism critical analysis, then you will tend to have a much better smoother happier life. You have fallen for CIA American propaganda, you are a complete and utter representation of the elite aristocracy class you claim to resent, not realizing that if the world you want is ever achieved, you are among the richest and most privileged people in the world. You sit from your First World house, using state of the art technology to criticize the civilization that created everything that gives you any ability to live the life you think you could live without. The facts are, if I were to take away your First World luxuries and force you to live a subsistence lifestyle, you would cry and beg for your old life back. The life where you enjoy elite status by complaining about the more elite status of those who are more privileged than yourself.
found this video through tiffany ferg and absolutely love this take on the series! your eloquence and attention to detail is exceptional, can't wait to see more
This is really such an interesting and brilliant analysis. I think you did such a good job in explaining complex concepts and breaking them down for an audience that might not have heard of them. I really feel smarter after watching this video. Furthermore, I think you prove everyone wrong that thinks pop culture is dumb and doesn't relate to everyday life. I'm really glad Tiffany Ferg introduced me to you and I look forward to watching more of your videos! :)
This video essay was so well done! I'm such a big Harry Potter fan but I've never noticed the things you put into this video. Super interesting to see how much was put into these movies that went right over my head!
New Sub. Thank you!!! Your content is very much appreciated, Tiffany sent me. She seems to be a good judge of character! If you find the time, I think the Shadowhunter Series by Cassandra Claire would make another parallel-informative video. Anywho, thanks again!

Wow this was amazing. I never realized how I took all these historical cues for granted and how my implicit understanding of them left a lasting impression on how I viewed these movies and the characters. I also noticed that the cars parked in Privet Drive are all dark colours, except for the Dursley's. I wonder if that's a subtle indication (the silver car) that this family is different, despite their desperate attempts to appear otherwise. (P.S. I came here thanks to Tiffany Ferguson's recommendation and I'm so glad I did!)
Wow, this was one of the most captivating video I have seen in a while ! You did an incredible work ! The end especially is what really shook me, about how we crave so much nostalgia, but what we see as comforting in the end is no better than what we are experiencing at the moment. It really gave me some food for thought about what tomorrow's worl can be. Can't wait to see more content from you Mary !

Hi :) I really enjoyed watching, as a production design student and a fan of the movies. What really caught my eye in the films is how the gothic architecture makes its way into other places and items outside of hogwarts. I noticed the pointy turret like qualities of the candy packaging, not to mention the trefoils and gargoyles printed on the chocolate frog packaging, also some details inside the leaky cauldron. In the ministry I feel like this concept was abandoned, besides the veil in the mystery department that's inside a crumbling pointed arch, do you feel like I'm missing anything else? What's also interesting is how the gothic style is implemented into MACUSA in Fantastic Beasts, there are some really cool details I found like how there's sort of a gothic tracery and vaulted ceilings, but they are made of 20s materials, metals and steel. When you talked about the statue in the British ministry and gave the example of Albert Memorial I noticed how similar it is to the arch found within MACUSA, this is so interesting. I was disappointed to see I can't find anything gothic in the french ministry in Crimes of Grindelwald, only exaggerations of the art neauvou, which I guess maybe can be linked to the over the top tracery of the late gothic style but idk.. what do you think?
I haven’t spent much time looking at Magical Beasts unfortunately- but from what I remember of the first one I enjoyed the production design a lot! I love all those little details you pointed out in the sweets packaging too - also the design of many of the books and newspapers are also in keeping with this style.
Amazing. This is literally my new favorite video. From how eloquent you are to the depth of your content to the dissection of your brilliant analysis, I am blown away. Girl crush 5 ever😌
This video was sooo good! Im really glad you decided to start a youtube channel since the topics you talk about are worth a good 20 to 30 minute exploration, specially since you do it really well. I hope you find that part of your audience will appreciate this videos as much as i have and you continue on without worrying that a video of more than 10 minutes will loose the audience's attention, it definately could but like i said you did an excellent job on this, so thats not going to be a problem 😘 cant wait for more videos to come!
Thank you, this was very interesting and entertaining! I do think that many adult viewers of the films do pick up on the visual references quite consciously, and that they are used by the creators of the films to underline the satirical undertones of the story.
Stunning analysis Mary. This video stands alone for its perspectives on culture, which is fine as I have never read the books or seen the movies. Now I know they're about power & politics I have a perspective to appreciate them.

Brava Mary, this is so good! Like others have said, this feels like a video of a channel with a million subscribers, not a thousand. I enjoyed this thoroughly.
