Very cool, and the home charger is a must it’ll make it massively cost effective and it’s so much more convenient, back then rapid chargers cost virtually nothing - different story now. Enjoy and keep us posted we have the new HS coming tomorrow Fedup
Good review Ben, thanks. Just put a deposit down on one of these for my wife, we still got the additional £3500 that MG are giving in addition to the government grant so it makes it the most affordable EV of this size by miles. Think we’ve make a good choice 👍🏻
Planet Auto good to hear. We went into Kia yesterday to discuss a Soul EV but their finance rates were massively high and it’s 37k before government grant, to me that’s just too expensive for a Kia so we left.
I'm test driving one on Friday. And my wife is very keen..so should be all good as our next car! I prefer reviews from people just driving them and not comparing them to car twice the price. So many thanks for the review!
I think this car proves much more than anyone else currently on the market that it is a fully functional daily driver! VW, Audi and Mercedes are light years behind with their toys for rich boys!
Thanks for a great "real world" travel video. A great thing about the video is that Annabelle also is genuine interested in the car, wanting to know as much as possible about it. Before seeing the video I have ordered a test drive and has halfway decided to buy one, price here in Norway is about 21.000 pound (with metallic paint).
Thank you, MortenBO - we had such a blast making this road trip! I’m learning new things everyday, so I’m so glad it comes across 👍 When is your test drive?

@@PlanetautoUK Me and my wife did the test drive yesterday in Bergen and we ended up buying the car, the "Luxury" version in blue metallic, total incl. delivery/registration and all, 265k NOK, close to 23k pound, 2 weeks delivery time. Great VLOG guys. I'm going to Reading to test drive this car on October 7th. I drive a daily commute of 46 miles, mostly motorways between Camberley and Heathrow. So it was interesting to see you 70mph range test. I currently drive a VW Golf TDI and find sticking to 60mph on the motorways makes a big saving on fuel so I think it may be the same with EVs. Great fun to watch! 😃
Excellent video well done, i have been looking at ev for the first time and this is definitely a car i am considering, i do not have the ability to have a home charge point so this was always a concerning for me, however you have alleviated these worries as on this video you fast charged at Waterlooville which is about 4 miles from my home and with the daily mileage i do i would only need to visit this point every 8-9 days and at the charge cost albeit higher then others is still a lot cheaper then to fill my diesel tank for a month costing me £85 + for about 450 miles, by my calculations £12.50 per 150 miles is still a saving of about £50 a month, i have fully subscribed and will continue to watch the series, thank you
Is it compulsory to use the KERS or is there an option to turn it off and drive it like a regular car? Reference was to the Blues Brothers movie. One of my favourite movies.
Hi Behram - you cannot turn it off entirely, you have levels 1, 2 or 3 giving you an element of regen. Glad you caught the Blue Brothers reference! One of my faves too *A
Well done on the video cannot wait to get mine :) just a small point when on a motorway always best to be on a low regen (KERS) setting ( unless stuck in traffic) as it is much more efficient to coast than to have the regen kick in each time you lift off the throttle.

Part 2 we are 70 ish pretty much most of the way if not a touch above - higher speeds do sacrifice range up to around 1.5 mile per mile, mind you I was sharply accelerating and travelling higher than the limit to allow safe manoeuvres and overtakes. *ben PS enjoy the test drive
Hi Paul, How do you know yours won't come until February, is that when your ordering or have you already ordered and that's what you have been told? Thanks
AMAZED with regards to the number of people who dont know how regen actually works. If you have regen on going down a hill, yes you will get around 10-20% back, BUT you loose that and more when you go back up the hill, better to have no regen on highways and only use the regen around town in stop and start situations. Remember that whenever you touch the brakes (thats including regen) your losing efficiency, its better to use no brakes at all. HOMEWORK for the weekend, read up on Regen.
I'd like to say that Google is not actually great for finding chargers. However, plugshare is a great app that works world wide. Updated if it's working by it's users and also tells you prices and very handy notes to where they are located them (incl pictures). Also driving 60 is not only good for the range, also a lot safer.
Ran into this video while comparing things in England as opposed to America where l reside. I am originally from Heartfordshire. Nice good and honest trip. Very informative. England seems to be embracing E- vehicles more openly

hi......is there any chance you could find out if the underside of the MG has been under sealed when it comes from the factory.........ive heard on several forums that underneath rust protection could be better, and some can rust badly within seven months!!!!........which is a bit of a bit of worry, i have enquired about Wax undersill at a cost of £495.00
What a great video showing the new MG and the use of charging. Ive been driving for 5 years Tesla Model S P85 in the UK for 85K miles. Looking forward to the latest breed of EVs bringing down prices and broadening choice I wont swap from Tesla but we all have different needs. I think you will find the main reason the projected range goes up when you hit the towns is the reduced speed and the GOM (Guess O Meter) calculates range based on average driving so if you have been recently driving quick in a low miles car it will underestimate your range if you go slower, over time and use it gets more accurate, but its trying to be a crystal ball! I agree regen helps but as a proof if your out of the town and just drive slow you will get the same or better result. The Physics remains, pushing energy back into the battery has a % of waste, its better than using the brakes but cant beat anticipating on the road and keeping a constant slower speed. Power diminishes as the battery drops just like if batteries in a torch go down the light gets dimmer, yes there may be a software limit to what energy you can draw on a low battery pretty much all EVs do this, as much to protect the battery (Lithium Ion batteries dont like heavy current draw when near flat) as give you a longer range on that last bit of energy left. But great demo of the MG and as you say the responsiveness of the EV power train is like nothing else....no going back!
Thank you, yes the value for money in comparison to the combustion model is quite crazy, thank you for the info. When I drove the Model S P100D I got just got it and since that day I’ve loved EV instant power. *ben

I’m afraid regen is not giving you more miles ,it’s the guessometer recalibrating depending on speed and mode you are in. Great car for the money. Bigger battery and raise the price by a few thousand would have mead it a game changer but range slightly less than those around it in price . Free wheeling best way to gain miles
Hello Ben & Annabelle, I only just found your channel looking for MG ZS EV videos. I apologise if you have covered this in another video however this is the first of your videos that I has seen, but please could you let me know how long you have this EV for & do you have one on order and do you currently own an EV or planning to buy one? Actually it would also be interesting to know what you usually drive as your own car? Thanks showing us your view on this.
Hi Mike - thank you for some great questions. We have had this EV for the past week on review direct from MG, so we do not currently own one (this is mainly due to the fact that we cannot fit another car in our drive, as we have our Honda Civic EK4, our Mk2 Golf 16 valve 3 door, along with our classic Mercedes 230CE W124) our everyday car is the Civic, although we don’t drive it much as we have press cars on review...we would both love to have the ZS EV, it’s a great car 👍 *Annabelle
@@PlanetautoUK Thanks for the quick reply, I'm binge watching your videos as of now to catch up. The thing that caught my eye was your trip from Goodwood which is only 20mins away from home for me, so I know the area that you took to Farnborough via Waterloooville & Eastleigh well. I have an ZS EV on order and it's due this month (Sept 2019), though I'm yet to actually see one in person and I'm still undecided whether to go ahead with the purchase for a number of reasons. Especially as I also have deposits on the Honda-e & ID.3 both of which I prefer over the MG ZS and I also need to do a cull to reduce the number of cars we have on the drive & road. BTW - Nice choice of cars that you have there.
They are really nice cars - we made a video of the Honda we saw at Goodwood (and the rest, lol) you sound like a kindred spirit - too many cars, not enough space...😎 lots more to be seen on our channel *Annabelle
Hi well to start with well done on the video.......just a couple of things is this MG your own or have you been given the car to test.......im still waiting for my MG garage to even get a demo in !!!!!! to try
We had tunes on full whack, which is very good, sun roof open, air con on and everything enabled, blips of acceleration are literally the only we saw that added to depletion, temperature drops unless extreme I can’t see really affecting it *ben
Wipers, lights, or even radio doesn't affect much. If you use standard 55W bulbs, it would take 3 hours to lose 1 mile. And that's only if your 12V battery completely dead
I know you have polar and pod point apps on your phone, but they will only show you there own chargers. I have been using zap map for over 2 and a half years which shows you every brand, make, model and charge type. You can even plan routes based on your cars range. Great videos though and have my zs ev on order.
Great minds think alike, Daniel. We found exactly that, so I downloaded the Zap-Map today, and we are using it right now to execute Part 2 of our road trip. When is yours being delivered? *Annabelle
Fantastic, I’ve been told I should get mine either just before or just after Christmas. Looking forward to it. I currently have a Nissan Leaf and love it. Ready for something that will do more range now. Your videos are the only real thing we all have to go on as none of the dealerships near us have one in stock to look at. And no one has done an in depth review, in particular the real range capabilities of the zs ev which is what all of us really want to know. Thanks again for the informative videos 👍
You are the first person to comment on sound in over a year, is it not your setup? I dislike A / C and always drive with a window down, unless it’s a short driving section. With a road trip it was window down or the highway, Annabelle is the same *B
It’s likely louder sound due to no engine too, thinking about it, we’ve just filmed a RoadTrip in the MG5 if you’re interested, that one we had to have the window down around 5mm due to the crazy weather, thank you *B
@@PlanetautoUK Yeh I think a year old video came up because I had a test drive of one the other day. I’d never heard of the car so decided to research it on RUclips.
Hi Jonny, great question. It was really comfy to be honest. Throughout the road trip it kept us well supported. The only thing we didn’t test for long were the heated seats as it was far too hot. *Annabelle
Thanks Ben.....I was even more surprised with the car than I expected.....It is a very well put together car and simplicity itself to drive.....There is plenty of room inside it and as I said the car is wider than my present car (Hyundai I20) and I've never felt cramped in that and I am a big guy.
Just to correct: granny cable is 2.4kW max (UK legal limit, 10A constant); Type 2 is 7.5kW max, not 7.5-50kW, it's limited to 32A for this particular model; CCS is up to 85kW, but Instavolts giving you 50kW only, you may try some Alfa Power units of passing Leeds area, they give up to 120kW, but not all. Another thing, when lady said 35p per kW, it's per kWh (kilowatt-hour). Flow is measured in kW (kiloWatt), amount/capacity in kWh's. Or, if it's easier to you, I think pretty soon term 'unit' will be accepted, say MG ZS EV has battery capacity of 44.5 units accessible/available. Lots of info in FB MG group
Ah, interesting...thank you! We got our info from the Zap-Map App, so we will do a full check of the actual specifications from MG tomorrow. *Annabelle
Wills Brewery Renault Zoe uses 3 phase charging, not single phase 🙂 single phase charging normally limited to 40A only (J1772 standard, didn’t check for Type 2)
Great vid again. Can you summarise the distance covered and the range used during the said distance travelled, so its a lot easier to understand, well for me anyway hahaha.
It’s an interesting one, handy as far as driving in, mind you a collision impact on the side of a combustion car is enough to cripple the fueling system, thank you.
Good video ,but £12 in total or £0,35 per KW is for my liking too much , I live in Canada and about $ 20cad which is not much here but for Europe , very costly , I find , Here the costs is around $ 0,17-0,24 cad depends which state your in , but in super EV from MG and the less time it takes to charge is spot on ,they should start selling them in Germany for that range the Germans will exchange instead of the Zoe,
Thank you, we could have done the journey for free, however we wanted to demonstrate the different chargers, meaning some free some not, that’s crazy prices .
Planet Auto do you now if it has a reading of miles to kWh in the settings, it’s just that I have a Zoe and in my settings through the summer I get about 4.5 miles and in the winter about 3, I too have a heavy foot
Yes I agree with the poor charge port design, at very least there should be illumination so that you can see what you're doing, if you're charging at night you've got to chance, rediculous idea! Can I ask what real world range you're getting with the MG please?
Hi Mark, we were getting 1-to-1 ratio up to 70 mph, and about 1-to-1.5 range with higher motorway speeds, so it uses more battery power the faster you go. It didn't seem to be affected by anything turned on in the car though...*Annabelle
Hi planet auto , it's Adam from Aldershot, new subscriber to your channel.. , great reviews guys How did you find Farnborough today?? I was going to come up to the aviator to see you but had to go back to work Give me a shout out if possible on your next video part 2... My current car just to mention is a mk 7,5 VW golf GTi.. cheers
Hi Adam - thank you for the like! Farnborough is always fab, and next time we are there, please pop over and say hi if you have time. *Annabelle P.S. keep your eyes peeled for a shout out in Part 2 😊
You can get 400 mile on under 15 quid our Valver, Merc or even Civic we’d get 60 to 80 mile - this was using different chargers to show the experience - we could have done it for completely free
We all cant have have an ev there will not be enough chargers in the real world, imagine the queues. Will be interesting what the ev will be like in winter with the heaters on. Can i have the radio on will it drain the battery even more, we need more miles from ev before i commit to buying.
@@PlanetautoUK Lovely car btw and very good insite of the in's and out's of running an ev while doing long journey's, and how much time is spent charging your ev.
@@Group51 Except you voiced curiosity regarding an MG with soft suspension. I was just pointing out that it's not a genuine MG, but something else entirely. MGs are sports cars, whether they are two-seater roadsters, or sporty hot hatchbacks. They're not meant to be soft riding SUVs.
Public charging cost £12.91 and assuming real world range of 150miles is about 12p per mile. Also, did you charge to 80%? A petrol car with 40mpg and £1.31/l is about 15p/mile. I expect better savings than this?!
@@PlanetautoUK Oh yeh still not too bad but thats more than i've ever paid for any charge on my BMW i3 or Nissan Leaf! (I guess that does have a bigger battery mind)
Wills Brewery that’s an efficient way to own an ev, I thought this was unbelievable considering I chuck tanks of fuel in cars for car events, and I do like to drive rather spiritedly too 😊
Joseph would be very happy to be seen as a part of MG. It would be very expensive for MG to pay to have a salesman accompany the car for a 7 day review...
just a shame MG may have let this opportunity pass it by as by march 2020 be a massive choice and even tesla might be under 26k by then so MG will have missed the sales
IFmy car says 30 mile range I would be panicking. first time you run out of electric .IF you pull up and is pissing down plugin in charger . sorry but this is not practical stopping all the time. if I fill up my deisel car range is 600miles fill up once a week takes 5minutes . The mg is Chinese rubbish. when UK winter salt gets into the Chinese electrics .You would have to be brave or stupid to spend your money on this car. Just my opinion.

Enjoying the ZS EV content!
Did you noticed whether it saved your preferences (i.e. sport mode and regen level) when turning the car off and back on?
It does on ours, thank you *ben
Hi well to start with well done on the video.......just a couple of things is this MG your own or have you been given the car to test.......im still waiting for my MG garage to even get a demo in !!!!!! to try
Hi Peter. So glad you liked the video. We had this on review from MG for a week - really didn’t want to give it back! *Annabelle
Try coast mode (0 regen) when high speed cruising - you use 0 energy when coasting - you regen only about 30% of potential energy
Thank you, we tested this in Road Trip Part 2 *ben
Regen is much like engine breaking in that sense. High speed = high gear (low or no regen) low gear = (high regen) lots of breaking.
Chilukar thank you, in pt 2 and 3 we used this methodology, works well makes sense too *ben
Hi, can the door be lock when the car is charging.
Yes, through key and we think the app too, thank you Lee
The range will change in the winter with lights, heater, wipers ECT. have a test drive next week....
We had tunes on full whack, which is very good, sun roof open, air con on and everything enabled, blips of acceleration are literally the only we saw that added to depletion, temperature drops unless extreme I can’t see really affecting it *ben
John W looks like we’ll have to test one in winter then, be interesting to see if any of the loss can be mitigated *ben
You are welcome, Daniel. It’s such great fun being able to do this. *Annabelle
So, 13 quid for 140 miles of range approx? Seems expensive.
Looks nice.
It does, thank you *ben
Great video. Do you use Zap Map?
Thank you Shiraz - we do as well the vehicles own apps and systems too
The blues brothers 😎😎
Orange whip, orange whip - 3 orange whips - we were on a mission from MG, thank you Stephen 😆
From Australia, I wondered why they had the window open, when it is so hard to hear them talk. They have A/C if it is too warm!!!!!
You are the first person to comment on sound in over a year, is it not your setup? I dislike A / C and always drive with a window down, unless it’s a short driving section. With a road trip it was window down or the highway, Annabelle is the same *B
@@PlanetautoUK No worries
It’s likely louder sound due to no engine too, thinking about it, we’ve just filmed a RoadTrip in the MG5 if you’re interested, that one we had to have the window down around 5mm due to the crazy weather, thank you *B
@@PlanetautoUK Yeh I think a year old video came up because I had a test drive of one the other day. I’d never heard of the car so decided to research it on RUclips.
Clever thinking, we should have driven all manner of cars this year for review, CV has scuppered pretty much everything, here’s to next year - *B
I like your reviews and lets have more please
Thank you William, more on the way
What's it like starting to charge it at nigth?
Quieter and easy, it doesn’t take long to get used to you can even do it without looking *ben
Very interesting car. Only thing putting me off is that from your review the car appears very very narrow. Must be uncomfortable on a long journey?
Hi Jonny, great question. It was really comfy to be honest. Throughout the road trip it kept us well supported. The only thing we didn’t test for long were the heated seats as it was far too hot. *Annabelle
It looks narrow but it didn't feel narrow when I had my road test....and it's actually wider than my Hyundai I20
It doesn’t your right on that, it feels extremely well planted despite soft suspension, how did you find the experience? *ben
Thanks Ben.....I was even more surprised with the car than I expected.....It is a very well put together car and simplicity itself to drive.....There is plenty of room inside it and as I said the car is wider than my present car (Hyundai I20) and I've never felt cramped in that and I am a big guy.
Paul Moy exactly my thoughts, very comfortable and simplicity to operate, thank you for your views *ben
*Annabelle
Since when is Type 2 limited at 7.5kw max? Look up Renault Zoe! 43kw on Type 2!
Planet Auto check PlugShare app as well, that’s my primary gun 😁
Wills Brewery Renault Zoe uses 3 phase charging, not single phase 🙂 single phase charging normally limited to 40A only (J1772 standard, didn’t check for Type 2)
John W 3 phase is 400V 🙂
Great vid again.
Can you summarise the distance covered and the range used during the said distance travelled, so its a lot easier to understand, well for me anyway hahaha.
No worries - we are documenting it this way right now for Part 2. Stay tuned 👍 *Annabelle
@@PlanetautoUK Great looking forward to finding out?
It’s interesting I can tell you, lol! *Annabelle
If there's anything you'd like us to add to part 2 please comment below and we'll see what we can do, thank you
Hi, great video, I’d be interested in how you get on with the adaptive cruise control? Enjoy the rest of your trip. Martin
Enjoyed pt 1 if you are able to report miles per kWh on your journey at different speeds that would be great.
How many actual miles you have travelled and how many miles range used. Can you please also show the lane keep assist working?
As others have stated, I'd really like to know the miles/kWh both at points during and at the end of the journey(s).
Love the reference to The Blues Broyhers
Hurrah! Thank you, Drew 😎 it’s one of my favourites, even though they squash so many cars!!!! *Annabelle
@@PlanetautoUK I never get fed up of watching it, I even love the Steven Spielberg cameo at the end
You paid £12 to fully charge your car seems expensive. Is 35p a kilowatt the average price at public charging points ?
Some are free, we stick 70 quid in the Merc every week or so and we consider that a cheap refuel
A very interesting vid.
Thank you *ben
Not so sure that the location of the charging point is such a good idea. Any frontal damage might result in a loss of charging function.
Hi can you tell me what miles to kWh you are getting thanks
Erm il have to have a look at that, thank you *ben
Planet Auto do you now if it has a reading of miles to kWh in the settings, it’s just that I have a Zoe and in my settings through the summer I get about 4.5 miles and in the winter about 3, I too have a heavy foot
trevor harris I didn’t see one combined appears to be 18.6kwh /100km according to MG - hope this helps and thank you *ben
Could you please try traffic jam assist if you have it ? Thanks
Il have a look, thank you *ben
Yes I agree with the poor charge port design, at very least there should be illumination so that you can see what you're doing, if you're charging at night you've got to chance, rediculous idea!
Can I ask what real world range you're getting with the MG please?
Hi Mark, we were getting 1-to-1 ratio up to 70 mph, and about 1-to-1.5 range with higher motorway speeds, so it uses more battery power the faster you go. It didn't seem to be affected by anything turned on in the car though...*Annabelle
@@PlanetautoUK sorry I don't understand your answer
What is a 1 to 1 ratio? In relation to range ?
That charge point placement does look 'interesting'....
It’s very handy when driving in forward *ben
@@PlanetautoUK was more refering to the very underneath the MG flap, two handed and a big old lean under..but that flashing though..
I was able to use one hand when released without looking, you get used to it, an illuminated jack May have been an idea though. *ben
Hi planet auto , it's Adam from Aldershot, new subscriber to your channel.. , great reviews guys
How did you find Farnborough today?? I was going to come up to the aviator to see you but had to go back to work
Give me a shout out if possible on your next video part 2...
Charging was a lot that works out more than filling up with petrol
You can get 400 mile on under 15 quid our Valver, Merc or even Civic we’d get 60 to 80 mile - this was using different chargers to show the experience - we could have done it for completely free
At the start, where you went around the corner to quick, and made Joesph shout ahh made me laugh.
All the luggage landed on him, maybe due to my acceleration 😯 *ben
Hi when will part 2 be released?
Currently editing it *ben
We all cant have have an ev there will not be enough chargers in the real world, imagine the queues. Will be interesting what the ev will be like in winter with the heaters on. Can i have the radio on will it drain the battery even more, we need more miles from ev before i commit to buying.
Thank you for your views, it’ll be interesting to see how it evolves
@@PlanetautoUK Lovely car btw and very good insite of the in's and out's of running an ev while doing long journey's, and how much time is spent charging your ev.
35p per kw is expensive great video looks like a great car
Thank you Mickster, bear in mind a lot of chargers offer Free charges too, we wanted to charge at different chargers to show what’s available.
What sort of noise does a pot hole make?
‘Bang’
Curious that an MG has soft suspension.
It is, and it’s soft yet doesn’t blow around or excessively lean, I want a race version 😃 *ben
It's not an MG, it's a Chinese built Roewe with an MG badge stuck on it.
Crash Box which is nothing to do with the suspension.
Crash Box manufacturers evolve hence the Stelvio, Cullinan and Urus *ben
Blues Brothers
We’re on a mission from MG
@@PlanetautoUK I guessed that...
Bottom line is the latest MG’s are very good, we’ve done 1000’s Of miles in the whole range, we just need the Marvel R here now
Zapmap?
Yes, a great app showing chargers and related info
Public charging cost £12.91 and assuming real world range of 150miles is about 12p per mile. Also, did you charge to 80%? A petrol car with 40mpg and £1.31/l is about 15p/mile. I expect better savings than this?!
£15.00 for 400 miles - remember many chargers are free *ben
Great. Just takes hours longer to get to you're destination. Life's too short.
What works for some may not work for you, that’s why there is so much variety out there. Thanks for watching! *Annabelle
That a very expensive charger you went to I’ve never paid that much per kw
Exactly, we paid this one, the next 2 were free 😃
£12.91!!!!!! OUCH!
Wills Brewery under £15 for well over 350 miles though 😃
@@PlanetautoUK Oh yeh still not too bad but thats more than i've ever paid for any charge on my BMW i3 or Nissan Leaf! (I guess that does have a bigger battery mind)
Wills Brewery that’s an efficient way to own an ev, I thought this was unbelievable considering I chuck tanks of fuel in cars for car events, and I do like to drive rather spiritedly too 😊
Is the guy in the back an MG salesman??
Joseph would be very happy to be seen as a part of MG. It would be very expensive for MG to pay to have a salesman accompany the car for a 7 day review...
shame about no cars till april or march 2020
Some people are getting an earlier delivery- it depends on when the deposit was made. *Annabelle
just a shame MG may have let this opportunity pass it by as by march 2020 be a massive choice and even tesla might be under 26k by then so MG will have missed the sales
Thank you for your views, this is primarily a city car meaning it would not get this low, realistically how many long hauls would you go on. I’d use one of my petrol motors for that *ben
Small boot it seems??????
Similar to the petrol variant *ben
