Spring Yard uses rings as instrument, Star Light the goal post, and Scrap Brain the death sound (0:34). This game never ceases to amaze me.
I didn't know this actually
A lot of Sonic 1's zones do this actually.
Marble Zone uses the spiky chain things in the zone.
Spring Yard Zone uses springs as the bass, as it's full of springs. It also uses the ring sound.
Star Light Zone uses the goalpost, which makes sense since you can clear the stage really fast.
Scrap Brain Zone uses the death sound because it's literally hell and you're gonna be dying there A LOT.
The special stage uses the death sound as a main bass also.
Well, they are perfectly valid Genesis instruments that also happened to be used for sound effects.
@@sanicmaniac what about Labyrith and Green Hill?
10:11 when you remember that Masato Nakamura is a bassist and puts the bass everywhere.
Lol
And then you remember how bass makes everything sound amazing.
As a cello player who looked back at the bassists when they were playing, I can tell you that they want SOMETHING to do, so if I was a bassist making this song, of course everything would be a bass.
I like the gap in 8:05
in fact, on the claw machine, they use a modified genesis missing PSG (or was it DAC) so what do you do when missing instruments? why, add more bass of course!
This tune is depressing in a good way, if that makes any sense. I mean, it so perfectly fits the mood of the zone, with the polluted background and all.
It really feels like desperation and "okay shit is real now." Especially when act 3 rears it's ugly head.
Why is this so deep for no reason
Sounds of hope

That main instrument on Channel 0 sends chills down my spine like it sends noise through the sine wave.
EDIT: Also, PSG 1 sounds like it inspired the 8-bit version of Scrap Brain.
I believe PSG 1 is the countermelody, along with Channels 3 and 4.
Did they actually use the death sound effect for this?

I love Sonic music.

I really love to see how songs are actually "made"
@UnlikeCat Assuming the composition step is sequencing or synthesizing a system-readable track using the Genesis/MD dev kit, the next step would likely be inserting the track into the game's ROM. The track would consist of a list of commands to tell the audio processor what to do, I think?
@@valced They used GEMS (Genesis Editor for Music and Sound effects) to compose the music and sfx for Genesis games. You can actually downloaded and load it into DosBox and have a go at creating some sick Genesis tunes if you want: segaretro.org/images/6/6b/GEMS.zip
or you could just use DefleMask, a multi-system chiptune tracker: deflemask.com/

That fits well with this channel (i mean channel 0 in this vid)
I see the purple represents my face after I die on the first pit and have to restart the ENTIRE GAME! This song is perfect for this zone, it's ominous and sad. It's terrorfing and comforting, giving you hope to push on and win. Really great piece of music, hope it returns in a later Sonic game. Either the music or the zone.
Zone name checks out, scrapped brain while trying to beat it.
Especially since act 3 was just a recolored Labyrinth zone
@@TheRealChrisPlays yeah and nobody wanna do labyrinth again
Channel 4 cannot be unheard once it's started
The "Chorus" of this (C, Ebm/Gb, FMaj7, Gadd6/9) is quite similar to the Chorus of "Sir Duke": B, Fm, EMaj7, B/D#, C#m7, E/F#. FANTASTIC chord progressions! :)
It sounds so eerily mechanical, and that just makes it better!
I love how the channel 0 + 3 combined in 0:36 is so similar to the sound of Sonic losing a life.

There are so many parts to this tune! You can't even hear a lot of them in the finished product, but it wouldn't be the same without them. My favorite part is actually the PSG 1 channel, but I love how Channel 1 has so many overtones of the Robotnik theme. Really supports the idea that Scrap Brain was supposed to be the badnik factory. Was that Sega's original intent? I thought that was a fandom supposition.
The 'kettle drum' stifles the snare every so often (DAC), but as a complete song, this is not noticeable at all. Love it.
Probably the best classic Sonic theme ever.
Channel 1 has always been my favourite in every song

Listening to such detail of each channel, put in to one soundchip, is the the best thing ever heard.

Channel 1: Bass
Channel 2: Same as Channel 0
Channel 3: Trumpets, Bass for a second

DAC: Drums, Timpani that's like a few milliseconds off time and that's seriously bothering me OMG REEEEEEEE

the bass kick ass
That bassline in the chorus kills me every time. Thing is so sweet!
I NEVER realised that the main lead is a Sine/Triangle wave! That's cool!
This is better than the original green hill zone theme. This is my second favorite track in the game.
Nakamura are a genius I know that he had a break with his band in 92 but damn I wonder how his sonic three music would have sounded I’m sure it would have been excellent not that the one we got is any bad but I still wonder
PSG 1 sounds like toxic caves from sonic spinball

The DAC sounds like someone banging on the table.
Channel 2 alone just gives off a feeling of depression to me, I don't know what it is about the sounds its making, it's just, very depressing sounding, and I don't know WHY.
Remember Green Hill? This song is so happy and upbeat, isn't it? If Robotnik just successes with his plans, Green Hill will later turn into another Scrap Brain. A sad and unhappy future for the small hometown of Sonic and the living animals. Which means, Scrap Brain is basically a contrast of Green Hill.
3:36 hits the sweet spot
I've noticed a pattern with the megadrive music, and that's the fact sega completely forgot about PSG 2...
It might have been reserved for sound effects.
I believe the games' sound drivers can't access all 4 channels of the PSG when the Yamaha chip is in use. it's a choice between 2 of the square wave channels and the noise channel (as used here) or all 3 square wave channels but without the noise channel.
Aren't Sonic's jump and skid sounds PSG?
@@risingstar4460 they absolutely are, not sure why I said otherwise. will correct!
@@RWL2012 it actually is something about the psg2 and psg3.

Psg 1 track is lone freedom fighter from sonic satam, sending Eggman's secrets via Morse code to the freedom fighters headquarters.
The hell?
@@JamalLeEpicBall123 2:25 i was just making joke, how that track alone sounds like some sort of morse code. and who else more fitting to send such things in Sonic universe than some poor Freedom Fighter from Sonic the hedgehog SATam cartoon. who is trapped in some deep parts of Robotnicks lair.
@BlueSojuMonk yes i know. i was just making a joke how it sounded like some Morse code.
Which i then themed in a way that it would fit on the Sonic universe.
I'm well aware that Sonic 1 as a game on Sega Mega Drive/Genesis came first , before anything else in Sonic The Hedgehog franchise.
as i was there 3 000BC when this game was made.
Deconstruct Streets of Rage 2 please!!

@@_TheJp_ I don't know man, light crusader has a pretty awesome sound track too.
They did 🙏
That timpani is godly.
Hail Yoshi!
they did a good enough job simulating a theremin lol
I think, as long as I an find pleasure in this, things will be fine.
Can you do more sonic 3d or spinball tracks, love those
I never would have even known of Channel 4's existance until now.
I wonder how they made timpani and drum play same time in DAC channel?
Maybe they were working on drivers that could play more than one sample at once. There are later games that do. Ristar, Mega Turrican and i think James Pond 3 all can.
But in this tune they don't play at the time time the snare gets interrupted almost instantly so it probably just gets played slightly before the timpani does.
If you listen closely, the snare is actually playing right before the timpani. The timpani sample cuts off the snare sample prematurely, just enough to give the illusion(for lack of a better word) of both samples playing at the same time, but not so much as to take over the snare completely.
Yeah, the snare and timpani are delayed from each other slightly. MarkeyJester made a version of this track with his Dual PCM driver / SMPS mod, and in that the snare and timpani play exactly on time together.
@@Linker2A03 that's so awesome! Man the composer was extremely creative with the genesis limitations. And as they say, limitation breeds creativity!
I can hear both sounds at once. I think they pre-computed a sample that has both sounds mixed together.
PSG part sounds badass
Channel 1 and DAC sounds cool!
I love how the Sega Genesis Ym2612 can handle this!

I'm still sceptical the intro is in 4 / 4 time
Channel 0 got that X-Files vibe 👀
6:40 Without the rest of the sounds it’s still catchy to me at this part.
Can you make mighty max Genesis ? :)
PSG1 would be a great Easter egg if anyone used it as a machine calculating sound effect.
How do u even fo these I'm curious
Does anyone know the name for the instrument that's on channels 0 and 2, or at least how they achieved it? It's the theremin-sounding one. Ot's always been an impressive sound to me yet to my knowledge this is the only game on the genesis that uses it
Looking at it, it's really a simple sine wave that they very slightly distort and modulate, then have 2 echo off of 0.
It's a bit odd since most times they'll combine multiple waveforms together to modulate and make a sound. I think that's why it sounds so unnatural, because it's so different than what most usually do.
@@Firestorm2900 not that complex tbh
@@JamalLeEpicBall123 you mean what they did with the channels? I was more impressed by how it was used; doesn't have to be complicated if you use it well
