For anyone that hasn’t seen The Good Fight, go check it out asap! It was such a unique show and better than The Good Wife imho. It’s surreal and takes place in a sort of alternate timeline to reality that gets more bizarre as the show progresses. It could have yielded several interesting spin-offs.
I loved it. my first time meeting ELSBETH...but I like my crime shows on the light, funny side...and I haven't found a good, funny crime solver since MONK. great review.
It's basically a female 'Matlock.' This kind of show was a staple in the '90's, i.e. Matlock, Columbo, Murder She Wrote, Perry Mason, Diagnosis Murder, and more. I love family rated shows like this.
Arlene brings Vampire Bill to justice. But seriously: this was very good, but there's just a little tiny bit too much frivolity to her AND Vampire Bill's interaction at the end. A girl is dead, after all, a little more somberness would be appropriate, I think. Just a little more. But I really love the show and the concept otherwise I wouldn't criticize!
I'm unfamiliar with the Good Fight,so didn't know the character Elsbeth before watching this show.I did know Carrie of course from True Blood, and loved her character in that, and the same goes for Elsbeth. She's like a female Columbo.
Elsbeth is basically Columbo with a modified Francis McDormand playing Elsbeth. That's how I see it anyway. You see the murder (Columbo). Elsbeth spends most of her time ignoring everyone's theories but her own, verbally sparring with the murderer. (Columbo). Her gestures and voice are pure Francis McDormand in Fargo. I have only seen 1 show and the motive was really weak. It looks like the success of the show is going to depend on the talent of Carrie Preston. (Columbo). It's a very smart move to fill the murderer's role with famous people, also a throwback from Columbo. I see this show lasting at least 3-5 seasons.
Frankly, the formula for 'Elsbeth' is straight out of the '90's. It's basically 'Matlock' combined with the quirky mannerisms of 'Columbo.' It's not so much 'Murder She Wrote' simply because it's more of a police procedural show and Jessica Fletcher was not part of the police department.
God this show is crap. Genuinely. If it was intentionally trying to be camp and a comedy, in terms of taking the piss out of detective shows, it would still be crap...but the acting is horrid, the script is crap, the relationships are clunky. How does anyone think this is clever or interesting? They aren't brilliant criminals. They are stupid criminals that basically give the gig away straight away and then all they need to do is get the proof. There's no genuine misdirection. That this is a spin off suddenly makes sense. Creating a show no-one wanted...and no-one will want. Dumb. Genuinely dumb
Bad writing the murderer injects them selves into the situation painting spot light on them and ultimately proving their guilt bad plot contrivances, and bad exposition dialogue end of each episode for brain dead audience the main actor is funny and cute but this show has terrible writing
I never saw the Good Fight or the sequel show, and I don't see me watching all that just for Elsbeth, but I'm close, I love her character so much.

I am familiar with her from the show "Claws"
It reminds me of Columbo. Just now watching the first episode.
Exactly. It's in the formula of Columbo, Matlock, Murder She Wrote, Perry Mason, etc. Good mystery while still keeping it safe for the whole family.

The novice viewer will immediately think either 'Murder She Wrote or 'Columbo.' Personally, I think it reminds me of Matlock, but also Monk.

The writing/plot line was not a highlight for me either.
