  • Sculpting the best possible physique has been a life long journey. Learning from the best makes this process that much more exciting. Today I had the honor to sit down and talk with the Black Prince of Bodybuilding, Mr. Robby Robinson. He shares his arrival in Los Angeles at the Mecca of Bodybuilding, Golds Gym in Venice and meeting Joe Weider for the first time. Enjoy!

Folks will listen to him talk about weights, exercises and muscles and take it as gospel but the moment he talks about any type of discrimination he faced it’s dismissed or discredited. He didn’t paint himself as a victim he literally shared a story about how it was a lot of people that helped him on his journey and how one person was ignorant and racist.

I don't know. He always seemed very genuine to me when he speaks.
Read his first book and read Dan Lurie book. They tell some inside stories about Joe. Joe was not a very honest business man and would screw a friend for money and self-fame.
I knew an editor that worked for Muscle Builder & Power. If i were to guess, from the stories he told me, 90% of the article in Joe's magazines were big fish tales or just not true except the contest highlights.

Gee... can't imagine why! Guy juiced himself up and now people believe that he has something to say about weightlifting. Like most of the "greats," he doesn't actually know much about weightlifting. They just lifted weights. A good example of this is Franco - doesn't know how to lift weights properly if it would save his life. Problem is that lifting weights at ALL winds up bringing results. Compound that with steroids and you can get a "champion." Had they lifted properly they'd be even better, but they didn't. Now you look at claims of racism. We all do it... we all make excuses for things. Someone treats you bad it's because of A, B or C. But if you're black, like Robinson, you instantly go to the bogeyman of racism. I mean, WTF? Why would Weider have bothered crowning Oliva if he was this racist? No, Robinson is pissed off that he didn't do better as a bodybuilder just like so many of them are.... but he, unlike a lot of white bodybuilders, can instantly jump to his skin color as the excuse. Not that he sucks, or that he had a bad attitude (which he clearly did). He's a narcissist like so many of them and believed he should have done better. So when he didn't, it was Weider's a racist. No ability to look inwards at his own failings... but that is what Leftist society wants from blacks: a permanent underclass who stays there by being perpetual victims of their own skin color.

I was all in the buying Weider magazines/ products back during the 80's, but when I notice how they treated Lee Haney and their refusal of putting him on the cover of Muscle and Fitness, I grew disenchanted with him and the way he did ' business '. Robby Robinson is still THE BLACK PRINCE .

I hear you.I do.As a teenager in the 80s I thought the whole bodybuilding California scene with Weider magazines selling a lifestyle was the way to be.To get to some yrs later, there was a part of me maturing and understanding how far the promoters of this illusion will go to make a buck..The dream or the lie that is still being sold is in order to be like them you need to eat and train ,like them is a younger naive me.Lee Haney was and still is a true champion not only for his bodybuilding victories but his leadership as a husband, father ,businessman and man of God.Robby Robinson was a people's champion, and was always sought after, they missed a opportunity.

Some time ago I watched a couple of Leroy Colbert videos were he says he loaned Robbie $500 which he never paid back. Apparently it pissed Weider off. Seems Weider was loyal to friends but if you crossed him look out. I’m wondering if that had something to do with it. Leroy Colbert was the first black man to appear on the cover of Weider’s Muscle & Power in 1953. Plus he was the first man to have 21” arms. I know he was on the cover of Mr American magazine in 1960.

They portrayed Weider as this great guy in “Bigger” but he fucked up bodybuilding just as much as he helped it. So much politics. He kicked out guys who competed in other leagues. Lots of guys in WABA and Mr Universe in later years were screwed over because of this. He fucked over Mike Mentzer. Bob Paris didn’t have a good career in bodybuilding after he came out as gay because of the politics of it all.

"ALMOST" 80. Robby was born May 24, 1946, so he'll be 78 in three weeks. Advance "Happy Birthday!" Robby.
We had a sparse number of well-known Black bodybuilders in the '70s; alas, few in America. I had the privilege of training once with Serge Nubret when he was in Pennsylvania for an exhibition.
Robby in his prime was positively spectacular. He was the bridge between Zane-like proportions, deep dry (potentially dangerous) cuts and vascularity, and the uber-enhanced mass monsters that were to follow. The Golden Age of Bodybuilding, for me, ended with Robby Robinson's era. Of course earlier bodybuilders did anabolic steroid cycles, but there's nothing about the subsequent generations of competitors that the average human could relate to. They were/are pharmaceutical and synthol repositories (e.g., Rich Piana, who recently died very young (46), as do so many contemporary bodybuilders; not a good life plan).
Robby, on the other hand, is still going strong at 78. Well...77 and 49 weeks. :-)
Weider died March 23, 2013, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, at the age of 93. He got to see his publishing empire decline and his bodybuilding competitions removed from broadcast and cable TV. There's some sort of legacy in there, I suppose.

Weider was definitely SLIGHTLY racist towards Blacks as a young man growing up in the 1950's and 1960's.
Joe was a product of his time
Remember that Blacks found it hard to gain recognition in many areas of life outside of acting in Hollywood.
But during the 1970's Joe certainly began to evolve as he grew older.
By the 1980's Joe was a reformed character.
Unfortunately Robbie met Joe in 1975 and it is a fact that Joe was still evolving with regards to certain attitudes that he held at that time.

So why, would Joe tell Robby he don't give blacks contracts, and Leroy Colbert said Joe, stuck his neck out for him, and got him in a vitamin shop etc. Do y'all think maybe some people upstairs, in another room, had their foots on Joe Welders neck? Telling him what is and what ain't gonna be? I heard this story, and it just seems odd to me. I came up loving the era, magazines and all.... Idolizing the guys too. The Weiders did more for the sport than most realize. I for one would have NEVER even considered weight lifting had it not been for those magazines. There was no internet. Not really covered on television, news paper sports pages, or radio. Without the Weiders the sport would have remained in an indefinite state of dormancy for decades and as a result tens of millions of people to this day probably would have never darkened a gyms door with their presence or financial support.
Though not perfect, they are to be celebrated entrepreneurs living the American dream, helping boat loads of others along thr way.
The Weiders weren't out there running around as corrupt politicians, selling fetynl, or stealing from the welfare system.

What saddens me is that Joe Wieider wasn’t man enough to apologize to Robbie before he died. With all the hands of black bodybuilders he raised who won the Mr. Olympia, I’m sure his conscious would not let him forget and make amends with him, yet he took it to his grave. And so this is why Robbie lost all respect for him. But now the question is raised as to did any of the other white bodybuilder’s know of this too? And if so why are they silent? He slept on the roof of Golds gym for months after being denied a contract He was suspended because of he complained forcing him to head overseas. Listen folks Mr. Robinson deserves a formal apology by the IFBB for not only was he a great bodybuilder but he proudly served this country for 20+ years.. Now who should spearhead the effort to make right the wrong? Mr. Terminator himself! I’m out.

Yes, Leroy has some videos with him and Weider speaking together, they seemed like really close friends.

@@Frank-pi2gz I remember hearing back then and this was from one of the top muscle magazine editors. But the top selling magazines were when they had a white muscle man and female on cover, 2nd was white man alone. But the sales would drop tremendously when they put a black person alone on the cover, hence why they rarely did it. It was just about the market, sales and demographics. But maybe that speaks more of America and Canada back then. I bought the mags monthly, never cared who was on the cover.

Robby Robinson by far was well sculpted and had great form better than Arnold Schwarzenegger and Frank Zane. I spent a lot of my money as a teenager on Weider Products and stopped when i found out he was a Racist.
