Thanks all the info and great videos on the plane Andrew. This is my 1st FPV and first Long Range. I’ve completed the build, and what a booger! I brag to anyone that’ll listen all 25 planes I’ve built in my 4 year RC career have been done without looking at a manual or a RUclips video. This was by far the hardest. Both rear pushrods didn’t line up, required some cutting, the front gear tiller was 4 hours of trial and most error and how to mount the ESC’s I still haven’t solved. But... now that it’s together it’s a very solid plane. I’m guessing another 40 hours on the FPV electronics/wiring I’ll be maidening it. No complaints, I love the builds and the satisfaction there in. Thanks again for taking the time putting these videos together. I think I’ll buy another Binary without the power, landing gear and lighting kit and see if I could build it in an hour. (LOL)
Andrew I was surprised to hear you say these motors are readily available. I did not buy the power combo pack because they did not state the make of ESC or servos. So I tried to find these motors and could not find them anywhere. Sonicmodell told me they were custom made for this model!! As a result I have installed Sunnysky 2212 980kv motors in my Binary with 8x6x3 props. I mention this because a LOT of 22 motors do NOT handle 4S.
Andrew Newton Thanks Andrew nice build. I have to say that cutting out and fitting the light covers drive me nuts in this build. Hope to at least do a 30km run in this powerful little bird.
Really want one of these! Will have to put it on my Christmas list. I always look forward to your videos, Andrew - you are the best presenter of plane stuff on RUclips.
I recently got mine and excited to throw it together, even more excited to know that you're building one so I can follow along, except I did not get the power package because I have so much crap laying around that I need to put to good use either way this is going to help big-time thank you Andrew! You're a rock star you! 🤘😎 When possible and you're not building a scale model counter-rotating props flies much better eliminates torque roll and also if they are rotating out words it produces more lift at the outer control services and if they are rotating inward it produces more lift on the elevator with more Control Authority on the rudder.
Hi Andrew, did you power the dusk lights from the receiver only? I am using an sbus set up on this plane with the zohd kopilot, can I just plug the lights into the receiver on a 3 position switch to power and control. Thanks for any advise you may have. Keep up the good work.
A great build Andrew, I'm looking forward to making another drop down belly camera for this plane and utilise my controllable narrow lens 8SE, I can then retract the camera for long rides out and back with much better efficiency and maintain a smooth skin for belly landing . Also a full 360 pan tilt FPV camera is a must. Cheers, thanks for posting.
@@AndrewNewton Look forward to seeing that footage. I'm cheating a bit with the pan, using a tiny tooth belt drive at 2:1 from a 180 degree servo. It gives lots of space freedom under the hatch.
It flies really well, even with a 5200 4S Lipo, the Pirate recently Maidened his, no dramas....Gotta do a dusk photo shoot Andrew....dont use a GoPro...hopeless in low light.
I am puzzled in my build. When you put the nose wheel assembly in the nose it sticks up into the space used by the foam front tab on the windscreen hatch. That tab can no longer fit in there to secure the front of the hatch. Do you slice off the foam tab & then secure the front of the hatch with magnets then??
I would like to make a slight suggestion. It is possible to acquire an electric heat shrink gun at say Banggood. It costs about 15 USD. Using an open flame for heat shrinking is neither correct, nor safe way to do it.
@@AndrewNewton I am sure that for such an experienced specialist as yourself it is not an issue at all. However an open flame could be a fire hazard if there are flammable vapors or substances around, and some people may not realize it yet. Electrical tools that blow hot air are a safe way to provide indirect heat to any tubing. Anyway, thank you for you great videos!
Another really good review Andrew. It's surprising how much a sticker will change the appearance of an aeroplane. I really like the look of this aircraft although you have to take it to the field as it is I would imagine as setting up would be a pain. Just out of interest, would you explain briefly how differential thrust works with one stick on radio control. Many thanks for another great video
Hi Andrew, looks like it could be quite a nice FPV plane. Waiting for the maiden!! Question for you: The wings - as you say - look relatively small. What is the chord of the main part of the wing? Thanks.
nice video! the plane looks very good !! many common flaws on plane kits have been solved on this model , but I'd reinforce those hinges with fiber grass tape - And one last consideration :the prop rotation may affect the angle at which the airflow ecounters the elevator
Excellent video as allways sir! :D when coming across this plane a while back it made me think back to one of my first planes: the Multiplex TwinStar 2.. is that a brand found in shops over there by the way?? It probably sounds stupid, but I skipped the Binary cause I don't like the looks of the canopy :$ Cheers & have a good weekend over there Andrew :)
Hi Andrew! Sev here again. Great video as allways! Had a great autumn and winter with my ASW28 until it flew away in an awesome uplift, haven't found it yet. Instead I've buildt a new one and installed FPV with RTH programmed in failsafe. For variouse reasons I haven't tested it yet, (shame on me) but I've been looking for an intermediate FPV plane for a time and put an Avios Tundra on my wish list. But Hobbyking is little available in Norway. I'm a long time Banggood customer and know their conts and proes (don't order during the Chinees new year) The Sonic Modell Binary looks great, but I have some questions you may give me your opinion on if you please: 1. How big are the landing wheels? I hope I can put on wheels with 8 to 10 cm to land and take off on ruffer surfaces. 2. I have good experince to cover foam models with laminating foil. The model then are going to be more robust, (landing in trees can be ruff). My experience is that there are changes in the CG, but I've adjusted that with ballasting. I'd like to hear your opinion on that issue. I'm not going to be a longdistance FPV'er but will enjoy flying in my own backyard (check out my videoes). I'm now trying out Arkbird 2.0 Lite OSD, looks promising. Had a crash on my bike reasently, so I'm handicaped at the moment but hoping I'm flying again soon. Happy flying - Sev
Landing wheels are tiny, maybe 30 to 40mm. It will take bigger wheels easily. I tried the Binary with iNav on a Matek F722 board but it wanted to over-react and stall in the GPS Nav modes. I'll retry with fresh iNav settings.
#4.??? Looks like another great FPV Platform. Should fly well, guessing that you Have Already maidened it.... Early morning flight just before sunrise with the Lights on would be Grand. The Twin Tri-Props will sound fantastic also. Cheers.
As you have checked the Center of Gravity Sir, I did the same, it was okay but when I fly it, then it fell to the down .He crush forward every time.last i change battery place than he fly ok.There is such a formula that we could absolutely find the Center of Gravity without fly the plane.
Have the sonic model mini wing, after watching your review. Been too busy getting a "drone" license to fly anything with wings so it's still unmaidened. Sonic model seem to really think about their design. I'm sure, somewhere, one day that model of plane will save a life, maybe then society will back off form all of us innocent SUAV pilots. that'd be small unmanned aerial vehicle....or an RC plane as it used to be known as!!
I purchsed one of these too with all the options. great model - I do like it. The aluminium landing bracket was badly bent (in shipping I suspect cos it was poorly packed) - again no big deal cos I can bend it back, though it shows the scars. I sent Bangood a picture asking for a replacement - they replied with "send a photo of the part, send a photo of the sku number, send a photo of the packaging label ... and a link to their warranty t&c's. I threw the packaging out - I am clearly a customer - all that crap is just not necessary - its really the principle of it that bothers me. You do great work, thank you, and I know that Bangood helps support that but their customer service isn't real good. I probably wont buy anything else from them again. Just my opinion...
To be honest they are not impressing me with the packaging lately. Nothing survives the journey unscathed. Maybe our couriers are making a point of smashing Chinese imports.
It's a great looking model! a good price too, BUT you 've seen how my planes arrive from banggood, (the last 4 I got partial refunds) not counting the Australia w/house, I was that impressed with the condition of the plane from Australia w/house I ordered a second Lark S. I am waiting for the blue one to arrive today? but my red one was delivered in pristine condition!! so I ordered the second one :-) If they sell this one from Australia w/house I'll buy it too, ...... great vid Andrew, you've made me want to buy it.....but their shipping??????????????

Manuals are misleading these days, stick to your tried and true methods, no matter how long the builds take. Building it half the fun anyway
Andrew Newton Fair Dinkum approach to life, I like it.
I was just thinking this morning how I was hoping someone posts a build video for this soon, and well here it is!
I heard your thoughts Chris
The polish and quality of the plane and the video is simply outstanding, you have a real skill. Thanks for the video!
Wondering if 9inch props will fit on it? will they clear the fuselage? thanks!
10" prop will just hit the fuselage, 9" will clear it by 1/2"

Just lucky mate. If you have the bits it makes it a cheap option for a very nice twin.
Very good video, Andrew! Thanks!
The Binary looks to be very good quality, and a great looking plane, too!
Looking forward to the flight video!
Will cheap 2212 motors perform good?
Yes as long as they are not crap.
Nice looking plane. I like twin-engine utility planes. Build quality looks good too.

Lights need an LED driver and power from the LiPo, but you would have seen that in the video.

Which engine gets the CW prop and which gets the CCW prop? Are both engines spinning the same direction? Appreciate any help with this.
Great video as always. Why remove the second ESC power wire?
I believe the voltage regulators can feedback to each other on switching ESCs. May no longer be relevant but there is no need for two 5V supplies.
@@AndrewNewton Many thanks, I'll check the ESC specs.

do the motor pods need to be glued together?
No

Very nice looking plane!

I do have a heat gun, and to be honest it does more damage than the small gentle flame for tight areas
