Today’s world is noisy and fast-paced. We all struggle to make time to find stillness. If we are still we tend to make ourselves feel guilty because of the time we spent resting, and we seem to find a million ways of distracting ourselves from being still and quiet. Photography can be a way to own the moment you are in, and to find purpose in those daily walks. Using a camera becomes the distraction, and can help focus your mind.
In this free online masterclass, pro photographer Paul Sanders will discuss techniques to help you look at photography as a tool to help improve mental health. He’ll cover what gear he uses for his shots, where he shoots and how he creates his work.

Possibly the best photography clip I’ve ever watched on the Tube. As someone who struggles with mental health this has been the most honest, grounded and connected video I’ve watched. Photography is “Your quality time, see it your way”. Incredible. Thank you Paul and Wex for making this available to the masses.

Out-bloomin'-standing, mate. This is a message for us all, no matter how solid or flakey we feel... The dark canine circles us. I was fine, in control, successful, then retired and realised how much of my life was a cage to keep the dog out; I've now taken the barriers down and can now go places that were previously off-limits due to fear. Thank you

Thanks for hosting Wex, and thanks Paul for being so open and candid. I both enjoyed it, and found it very useful. It's now making me think about my photography in a different way, namely it's not about trying to please others!

I felt that listening to Paul made me realise how and why I relate to photography and my own feelings of low esteem and how and why I like photography so much. Thankyou.

Fantastic advice and guidance. Amateur photography is not about creating images to impress other people but making images that speak to us. If others like what we do then that is a bonus! Thank you Paul.

Inspiring and informative. Thanks to Wex and Paul. I, too, enjoy just getting out with my camera. A good photo is a great bonus but not a necessity!

Very interesting to hear how you have coped with mental health problems and how the very subject that got you into that state has actually lifted you out of it. I have had similar problems in my life and when things have got low I have thought about places and times when I was most happy and relaxed. I picture myself by a stream under a great old oak tree with my large format camera away from everything and everyone that is bringing me down. I also as best as I can have to surround myself with positive people which can be difficult as the media seem to dwell on the negative which seems to become the general conversation and attitude of society. To a certain extent I have withdrawn myself from society as a means to protect myself and to give myself the space to stand back and see what is going on. Good luck with it all.

I am an amateur photographer and I suffer from chronic PTSD, where mindfulness has been one of the most powerful therapies in helping me manage my condition. Thank you to Paul for your honesty and advice and to Wex for making this. Photography is such an immersive hobby it keeps you 'in the moment'. Couple that with the outdoors and finding beauty in the things you want to and you have a very powerful therapy. As Paul says, you don't need expensive gear to try it. Your smartphone is enough.

Fantastic video, such a calming voice and such a calming message. Not even a whisper of an F stop! In this world of 'influencers' and 'keeping up with the Jones', we all need to hear Paul's message on a regular basis. Hoping Paul and Wex do more on contemplative photography.

One of the best photography tutorials I have seen, getting to the essence of both photography and being a photographer. A bit of technical advice but the essence is on how you feel and the importance of making images to please yourself. Very open about the difficulties that can be faced and emotions.

Thanks for the great video. I like the concept that we don't have to focus on the technical side of camera and instead can choose to focus on the experience - regardless of what pictures are taken. I recently bought a nice compact camera (Olympus TG-6) - it has great features and very freeing as I can leave my larger mirrorless camera at home.

Wow Paul, thank you for being so open and honest. I have been feeling disillusioned with photography and the competitiveness of it all of late. You have put this all in to perspective for me. Thank you, enjoyed this masterclass as it has given me a different way to think and do my photography.

So many brilliant insights … thank you! My little Fuji X100V has been my companion for a year now and I’m really enjoying the mostly monochrome landscape journey so far. 📷🙂 PS: I really need to start printing more of my snaps!

A wonderful way of putting things and pretty well sums up the relaxation and how I feel about photography. You made me smile at the end when I saw the size of your camera bag - am trying so hard to be minimalistic in the amount I carry - not easy!

I just like to say I really enjoyed listening to your blog and your experiences as I do love my photography too far gone also have to say the music you was playing nearly did my biscuit in it was a struggle to carry on listening to your quiet voice with the music in the background like he was in the middle of war of the worlds but your photography is excellent music choice very poor thanks for sharing much appreciated your time😂❤🎉

Great video but pity about the background music being so loud in places. I couldn't hear what Paul was saying.
