Friday, a huge update for our favorite sim and a new video from one of the best content creators on RUclips for this genre. A very good start of the upcoming weekend!
No torque on takeoff, no left pedal. No translating tendency or ETL as he transitions to forward flight from a hover. As a Robinson Safety course certified ( R-22, 44, and 66 ) and a Bell 407 Pilot, I can tell you that is not the case in the real world, not even remotely. However I do like the option of being able to add that I just feel that it's backwards and those should be enabled by default and if you want to turn them off you can or edit the sensitivity of it.
I too thought with the bell, "this is easy?" Then, immediately after searching and finding the settings: "ooooofffff... this is harder than i thought! " hahaha.. Having a blast with the new update, enjoy!
LOL, Same...it's quite a learning curve. I was able to take off no issues....flying forward I am getting better at, but one slight wrong move, I'll spiral out of control and that's that.
Virpil makes a collective for helicopter sims. And based on owning Virpil products myself, I would have to assume it is just as high quality as their other products. Would certainly make the game more immersive. Have a great day, Sir. o7
I made myself a collective control (and pedals, too!) for flying helos. Very smooth, precise operation. Based on Arduino with pretty simple programming. Loads of fun and very immersive.
Oh man, this is what I've been waiting for. Gotta hook up my foot pedals. I've flown a Cabri in real life a few times... weirded me out because it's French so the rotor turns the opposite direction.
OMG!!! I grew up playing Flight Simulator for the ZX81 😆(There are videos here on YT if you search it, Yes I'm old), and now I have a VR headset and a decent PC.. Soaring above the clouds in the Spruce Goose 😢 I'm actually getting kind of emotional, however I have looked forward to this launch for so long I got WINES.. Lots of Wine... The main transmission is rated for 5,000 hours between overhauls and the tail rotor gearbox is rated for 3,200 hours. The 429 is very popular to use by the police due to its maneuverability and reliability and easy maintenance
I just got on my hotas and rudder pedals and flew the small piston model from my local airport to a cul de sac behind my house and back. So, I’m pretty much a real helicopter pilot now.
Unpopular opinion, I'm personally not happy with the mandatory sim updates causing the sim to steadily take up more and more of my hard drive space. I wish there was a way to opt out and stay on an older version. The content additions are nice but I'd prefer not to have to keep budgeting more and more space just to play the sim. I'd rather stay on a version until I decide to upgrade. Being locked out of playing the version I have because I don't have 40 additional gigabytes on my drive isn't ideal.
0:26 Where's the "Yolocopter" though? Shouldn't it be in that category as well now? ^^ 2:57 Flight Simulator 98! Nice! BTW: 40 extra gigs - it's getting tight on my drive already :)
ANYONE with oscillation issues, here is the fix = "It's something of a bug people reported. Go to the main menu (end your flight (!)) and go to General Options, then Flight Model. Switch to Legacy and make sure you switch Global Preset to Realistic. Now start a flight and it should fly like on rails. End the flight and go to Main Menu, General Options Set Flight Model to Modern and start a flight. Now all should be well."
Helicopters, now that brings back fond memories! Specifically, these key words, that should always be at the back of one's mind, especially if single engined: Practice engine failure, Go!
Okay so i have to switch on Assistence otherwise i just spin aroun in the air okay because i was so exited about helicopters an it only turned around cycling like in a tornado and crash.
I would love a mode for unexperienced people that only want so see some stuff from a helicopter. So it feels like flying in battlefield, gta or something. An easy mode.
To fly a helicopter you need to counter-yaw as you hover. This is because there is torque generated by the rotor. However, when you reach translational lift it just flies just like a normal aircraft.
You still need to apply anti-torque pedals appropriate to collective input. More torque (raising collective) =left/right pedal depending on helicopter and vice versa for lowering collective.
I have been pursued by watching other RUclips vids and I have been convinced flying helicopters is a better experience visually for the flight anyway. My question is a simple one. If I only want to see helicopters in fs2020, what do you think is the best solution? I can delete all aircraft other than helicopters in the community folder, or can you offer a better solution. I can cut and paste the unwanted air craft to a back hard drive from the community folder if at some point I want to fly fixed-wing aircraft. What is your expert opinion on what to do?
Whilst flying, press escape to go into the menu. Click on 'Assistance Options'. On this screen, left click on the 'User Experience' dropdown. From that dropdown, click to turn off "Aerodynamic Visualisation (CFD)" and apply the new settings. (this may be unchangeable when you're flying some 'pre-made scenarios' related to training where it wants you to be seeing the lines specifically).
@@ascherlafayette8572 It's very obvious that I'm referring to your comment, which included me and it's why I replied to you. Maybe you should learn to understand what you read. Then stop assuming things because it's making you look stoopid. Although, I suspect you're simply being an a-hole but I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt for now.
After downloading 150Gb... my helicopter flight models is completely bugged. I cannot even take off, hes turning upside down in less than 5 seconds with me not even touching the controls. Everything was on easy. It MUST be a bug....
The fact that you take off and fly away that easily makes me not want to install the update. I'll stick to DCS where you need to work to keep your helicopter from ripping itself to pieces :)
Can you fly backwards without the sim absolutely losing it's s***? This was the biggest complaint I had about every other MSFS ever, is that I couldn't fly a helicopter in reverse without it basically crashing my game.
Be aware that the sim defaults to having helicopter assists on to help both cyclic control and remove the need to apply anti-torque pedals. If you have pedals and separate stick and throttle, I recommend turning them off. If playing on gamepad or twist stick, leave assists on I guess.
I'll stick with the superb HPG H145 sadly what MSFS offered up to us feels rushed with the lack of controls able to be mapped....Has anyone figured out how to map the cyclic trim ?
What I see there is a Helicopter model, but not flying a Helicopter but a Drone. I hope that's changed otherwise Helicopters make no sense. I did my PPL on the Cabri, I'll find out. Hope it's just OAs setting so he can even get off the ground 😉
@@ElixirOfEuphoriayes I did, didn't I write I hope it was just those settings? But the update didn't arrive here yet so I couldn't try. MS has become better in the quality of the flight models of planes and a serious contender to XPlane, I hope that applies to the Helicopters. Assisted cyclic and collective sounds like the SAS in a R44 I fly. But honestly, a non H pilot would not get a helicopter into a hover undamaged without such assistants, or fly straight and level. There is always that risk that, to make Helicopters accessible in the Sim, the flight model is oversimplified. Even without assists, so the players egos don't suffer 🤫 That was the case with the aftermarket R44. The Bell was more realistic but still different than any real Helicopter I ever flew. But let's stop the speculation, hopefully time to try soon, a few Gigabytes hopefully arrive soon 😉
@@ElixirOfEuphoria so now I tried myself. Assistants off is harder, but only distantly related to real Helicopter controls. At least it is easy with real piloting experience to fly Assistants off, that points to some similarities. In VR, there seems to be an issue with CPU power, the governor doesn't really work and jumps around all over the place. So I had to land governor off, which worked fine. There is a lot of work to do, but at least that work started now. Compared to the Cabri G2 available for XPlane 11, it's quite a journey ahead. Didn't even try autorotations, but the basic translational lift, etc. mechanics are somewhat there. Again, it's a start.
Same here it just spins around in circles for me and goes nose up. I only had a quick go with both settings but it just wants to do its own thing. I’m gonna have a play with the settings and controls tomorrow
@@EarthWasHere Are you flying with assists off? What type of controller setup are you using? As far as I know, helicopters require gentle inputs and it's really easy to over-control and become unstable. If I'm not mistaken that's called pilot induced oscillation. If you're using a xbox controller I'm pretty sure there's a preset you can choose, but I'm not sure if that would be enough with the assists off.

Yes. However, in general, third-party sceneries will have "hollow" buildings and you'll just sink right through them when attempting to land (unless the developer specifically provided a "solid" helipad for just that). But I've found that the standard FS2020 buildings seem to all be "solid" so yes, we can land on them. I just tested in NY.
