I love the new gameplay like cover grabs, and new guns. but it has nothing on Gears 3 "or even judgment" in terms of content your getting. what always pissed me off was cog or locust characters were locked to different teams, like how I cant play as my armored Kantus in hoard. We need overrun and beastmode back, plus the old enemies in hoard. Maybe I ask for too much.

Agree, but gears 3 system of characters isn't for gears 5 anymore. If they;re bringing as many skins as in 4 , then we need another kind of system. It will get boring to have characters only on level. I sincerely liked the loot boxes.
I remember the Anthony Carmine grind but it felt much more deserved to get him rather than those stupid scraps. And every character was unlockable from progression. What's even a point of leveling up now??

There are things I agree with in this video, and things I disagree, but hearing Shadows say that this game has the best unlock system on any Gears game ever was almost hilarious.
I'm not gonna lie, I like Gears 5, but the really restrictive customisation and character roster really kills it for me... being able to enjoy my characters look and feel like an individual is really important to me.
I felt the same way! I liked seeing the cool gun skins in multiplayer but got so disappointed when I saw how much I needed to pay in real money to look the way I want. I played the game for two weeks before it became too much
@Jefferson Mason player customization can be in any game, it belongs in gears of war multiplayer because people want to play as their favorite characters with whatever cosmetics they choose. Gears 5 doesn't let them do that and puts nearly everything behind a pay wall.

I bought my first Gears of War game in 2006. I have owned all the series from 1-5 and I can honestly say for the first time I felt disappointed. Three hours into the game I got bored. Gears 5 has no weight and intensity, the dialogue, characters, enemies and game play didn’t do it for me. Felt like I was playing a totally different game. Great graphics though

You hit the nail in the head my man. Like I've said to people who've asked if they should buy it or not... This is a great and fun game (to an extent) if you're looking to try it out on the game pass, but it's not a great GEARS OF WAR game. It certainly feels like a spin off like judgement did. It completely missed what made a gears of war game feel unique and the reason the trilogy are so beloved. Also the reason I got an Xbox 360 and a One is the first place. It is certainly made to appeal more to new comers and casual friendly. But by doing so completely downgraded the whole game for me especially in multiplayer. I went back to the play the first three and just details like the physics, the weight of the characters and the weapons and the intensity of the shooting and the gore and executions really do add up and make a hell of a difference. I actually thought having a new enemy type like the swarm was going to be a cool new enemy for the franchise but it really hasn't. They don't feel threatening like the Locust did and honestly the whole swarm enemy type just looks and feels cartoonish. I really want to like this game because it's gears but I just can't.
Yup that's what people are misunderstanding is it's a good game, but not a good gears game, and while I complained a lot about small things, there's so many of them and when they add up it makes a huge difference in the feel and tone of the game.
Horde needs to do away with the “hero” system, I hate being told I have to play as Kait if I want to play the scout role. Not to mention not being able to play duplicate characters. 🙄🙄🙄🙄
The multiplayer feels incomplete. I've put ALOT of time into this game on PC since launch and I've enjoyed it, but I do agree that it is missing some of the elements that previous games had. Physics feel lazy, customization like skins and weapon camos are lackluster, there's like 6 MP maps, even tho I'm a gold 3 I'm still queuing with bronze players. I hope to see more content soon
I remember gears used to make me unsteady when playing, the game was actually uncomfortably dark and gory. Now they are kid oriented colorful games. Should have ended on gears 3, you either die a good game or live long enough to become a shit one. Just start a new franchise instead of de-glorifying epic games.
So true with the Halo series. It should’ve ended sooner instead of dragging it out for more cash. Worst off are the secret endings you unlock after completing the game on the highest difficulty as they continue to tease the fans about a sequel with each getting worse. Maybe the next Halo game will be better but hard to say till it comes out but I digress.

I'm glad I got to play this game through game pass. I was honestly going to sleep on this because of how awful Gears 4 was with the micro transactions. I've been enjoying how well done the campaign is but there was that one question in the back of my mind. Is the multiplayer good? Seems like this video answers that question, just like Gears 4 it has bad micro transactions probably even worse. When I saw the character roster I thought maybe you had to unlock the others but I clearly didn't learn from Gears 4, of course that's the sad amount of characters they added. Gears of War 3 was the last good Gears game. It had micro transactions in it too but they were reasonable. If I remember correctly you could get about at least 20 skin sets in a Launch Weapon Skin Collection pack that cost $20 and buying a single weapon skin set cost $3. These days just a single weapon skin set cost about $25...Ridiculous.
I have to agree multiplayer feels like a major downgrade. The downgrade in the gore sucks. If feels slow to me. Automatics are insanely op. You can't even leave cover. Weak maps. It's still a good game but not even close to the best.

Loved the campaign, I felt it was a little short, but yeah the microtransactions and horde are AWFUL. Server issues have also really made the overall experience a real letdown.
Yeah I enjoyed the music and scenery in the campaign, and I really loved the matriarch mission! That felt like classic gears! But besides the story mode yeah I've felt rather let down so far ):

I'm getting to the point now where in-game micro transactions is reason enough to pass on a game. They feel like storefronts with a game wrapped around them. I'll spend my money on games like Remnant: From the Ashes. $40, no micro transactions, loot boxes or DLC; cleary made with love by a Dev team that plays games and understands what gamers want.
Yeah I agree it's insane the prices some of these games are asking for especially when it's cosmetics that won't matter in a year or so.. I still need to try remnant at some point as well! Heard a lot of good things about it!
Hell no multiplayer is terrible and horde has been shit because of restrictions and perk cards. That shit needs to go. Gears 3 had it as good as it ever needed to be
I actually didn't mind the Gears 4 Mico transactions at all. You could see all the skins you wanted and craft currency from old ones. Gears 5 micro transactions are a complete failure. Also, has anyone noticed the complete lack of textures in this game? Characters look like Super Mario bosses. I miss the detailed Locust skins.
Great video man. This is by far the best review i have seen of this game. You even mentioned all it's flaws and shortcomings it has,like any real fan should,which is something most reviewers are too afraid to do.
I was mostly disappointed,because i knew that most reviewers weren't going to touch on such topics,specially the terrible monetization the game currently has,out of fear of the possible backlash from the fans. Sorry to hear that,though it's to expected considering that our opinion isn't exactly popular with the rest of the community at the moment,hopefully that will change as time passes. It's a damn shame that most people are willing to give this game a free pass just because its there favorite franchise,but in doing so,there not doing the community any favors,if anything,there actually hurting it in my opinion. Exactly I'm an Xbox fanboy and a gears fanatic! I want the game to be great and wish for the franchise would succeed! But I wish more people would see and acknowledge the shortcomings the company is taking and hoping people won't notice, and it seems like right now most aren't sadly
Bugs can be solved plus they never know reawards can get better like the team rock wepon skins but they may add classic characters like dom like a gears 3 cosmetics ( with now graphics that would be mint )
I went back to Gears 4 and I’m happier than ever. Gears 4’s Versus is incredibly better than Gears 5’s, plus the fact that NOW is the time to play Gears 4, here’s why: It’s noob free atm (cause of Gears 5’s launch), it has A LOT of content (maps and Roster), it has a considerably lower population (so servers aren’t crowded and there is basically no lag), and the game and gameplay mechanics are a lot better overall. The movement, the damage omen, 8 gnasher shots per reload, Lancer is at it’s sweet spot (Gears 5’s Lancer is ridiculous), less sponging, normal respawns (Gears 5’s KOTH respawn system is possibly the worst thing in videogames I’ve ever seen in my life 😂), etc. Gears 4 overall feels like a complete finished product. I’m not going anywhere until TC gives me reasons to.
Yeah that tends to happen with a game after a couple years! 😂 but I agree, it's hard to go from a game with so much content and a lot of issues fixed, to a bare bones sequel with so many issues..
Alfonso González de Cosío shotgun is still shit compared to 5 but ye the whole game is just as a letdown when 4 came out with bearly any characters as well until they added em and I played the game at the end of the life cycle
I can find lobby's in gears 4 again most of the vets seem to have left gears 5. I have allot more fun in gears 4. Gears 5 versus is just full of people pop shotting in every situation because bullet magnetism. Everything is dumbed down to the point it isn't fun to play. I've played since gears 1 and I started playing because it was difficult to play.
Honestly all multiplayer matches in gears4 is filled with noobs rn only a few decent players i ran across playing. Just my experience after the gears5 launch

I have this game with Game Pass and I found myself happy because it is so well optimized for PC and I can run it so well on Low settings on my outdated PC. (I’m not able to play Wolfenstein 2 because the recommended Memory is 16 while my Machine is 8). However I’m not a Multiplayer gamer so I definitely understand your criticisms.

Yeah, I fell in love with the campaign, and have enjoyed the entire game throughout on that front, however, I have noticed the changes in Gore and Physics, and I do hope that they make the small changes necessary to where it goes back to that grittiness. The problems seem to mainly come from Multiplayer itself, however, this is not to say it does not matter, because multiplayer is a big part of Gears, and so they should definitely be addressed. This video truly is the one and only critique, not a shit rant, but a short, yet very credible critique, which I do very much appreciate.
Not just the engineer..the sniper class sucks in here too. I swear I could hear the swarm drones laughing at my ass, after I've headshot them 2 or 3 times with an Embar; yet they survive. 😑
Two years later, and I can say that some remedies have been made to all areas of the game. Horde now has character classes to choose from regardless of what character you choose, more characters have finally been introduced, and Versus has finally reverted back to that OG Gears 3 feeling. It just took the Coalition way too long to implement these changes into the game that’s now two years old. The optimization on Series X, made the already great looking game even better with ray traced reflections and real time shadows, etc. Overall, the mechanics across all modes are finally, what the game should have been more like at launch, tbh.
Everything you said is 100% facts. The campaign was fun at first cause there was side missions and you could upgrade Jack (which was really fresh compared to the other gears). But the final boss was a big let down that monster wasn't even challenging. The montriarch was harder than that. Then they leave it on a cliffhanger as if this game is good enough for gears 6. And the multiplayer is just a big dissapointmebt. Nothing new going on except a kill cam whoopdy fucking Doo!!! As a gears fan I'm just as upset as you are and honestly I hope coalition doesn't make anymore titles after this one.
Glad you agree as well! It seemed like for awhile there I was in the minority at realizing the obvious flaws that can be seen at face value, and was surprised the community was defending the game so much. Yeah I think the coalition should honestly try another IP out, gears just isn't the same anymore and the hype around the franchise seems even lower now than it did with gears 4

I hate that you're forced to use the lancer gnasher combo. Gears 3 had it right where you had multiple primary weapons to choose from. Though I hated the sawed-off at least it made the game play different. All I want is the retro and hammer to make a return and I would be satisfied with the multiplayer. Aside from that I agree with everything in this video. I was at the midnight launch of the first gears and haven't missed one. They better take there time AND USE IT WISELY on gow 6

Notice how he skipped Gears Judgement. From a OG gears 1,2, and 3 player, Judgement killed the franchise. Gears 4 helped bring back some legacy players but the game wasn’t better than gears 3. Gears 5 is a sorry excuse to keep the franchise alive. In my opinion, gears 3 was the best.
An honest Gears 5 review. Its so rare to see these in the wild. What happened to Gears 5? What happened to Xbox? "But Game Pass is duh future", yeah if Gears 5 is indicative of Xbox's future, Xbox doesn't have one. God forbid they look at their competition (that's kicking the crap out of them) and learn anything. Sony leads the way with record setting sales and quality and Microsoft goes "Nah, lets just give our games away for free and load them up with micro-transactions. Success achieved!"

Sorry, but I’m going to join the rant here. I returned from deployment, excited to play this game, being a long time fan from the original. I heard some of my good friends, who were also fans, tell me they were disappointed with this game. I couldn’t believe it and had to find out myself. I JUST finished the campaign and tried Horde/escape and right away did not like the major changes. Everything you said hit the nail on the head. They’re trying too much to be like other popular shooters and not like Gears. Changing the name itself is a slap in the face! I watched a couple of other videos about the game, just to get further info on the mechanics and something as little as changing the active reload really insulted me. Like, why would you change that?! The campaign itself didn’t even provide any real story progression. I don’t wanna post any spoilers, but between gears of War 4 and this entry, there isn’t much progression. And maybe I’m just old school, but I prefer the linear gameplay that the previous Gears has. Not the explore here and there and go to a certain point to progress. That’s annoying. One more thing. They should bring back the 4 player co-op! There was nothing more enjoyable then playing this game’s campaign with my 3 friends who all loved the series! To share the emotions of seeing the story progress was special! Damn the gaming industry on trying to get all shooters to focus on competition like MLG. Same issue with Halo 5. Exact same. End rant.
What I'm still trying to figure out is how I was able to play the entire campaign on the highest settings yet when I go to versus my graphics card stops working once I join a game.
Great video mate! This video needs more views. One thing you forgot to mention was Jack and how at first he was pretty fun to play in horde mode but he gets REALLY damn boring later on if you've played him long enough. The Coalition should make his Hijack recharge faster or give him more support abilities then healing your teammates and stunning enemies for them to shoot that are more engaging.

true. the plot was delving into Kaits story and how they were gonna attack the hive etc, then they just move on to a new plan about beacons and hammer of dawns, then its over. real disappointment

Outside of lagswitching and lack of dedicated servers for multiplayer, Gears of War 2 was the best one. Best maps(jacinto, blood drive, security... I mean come on this game only had two shitty maps-hail and stasis), Best campaign, best characters, best modes(wingman and guardian were created in this game), best gameplay movement. This game was truly a masterpiece.
this tugged some heartstrings. My first gears was 3, i chose that over cod: black ops 1. Just fell in love at sight, that lancer made me gasp when i looked at the cover art. Damn i was 8 when i got it, turned 10 played the other 2 games to get more in depth with Delta squad. Im 16 now, and this "gears 5" is the spider-man 3 of the franchise. Gears 5 felt like people were told to scrape a game together by a big studio. Gears 1-3 was passion and love put into the game, i mean goddamnit PEOPLES FACES AND QUOTES OF THEM THANKING LOVED ONES WERE AT THE END OF GEARS 1-3, REAL PEOPLE THAT HAD PASSION. But this, this is just a bunch of micro transactions and shit wearing the skin of the gears of war franchise. What a shame.
What happened to all the gamers who cared most about where the real work in video games was done, The Story? Multiplayer and other game modes are okay but the meat of the Gears series is in the Storyline that you play. I could care less about anything else. The story is the reason why I got hooked on Gears. Same for Halo, Mass Effect and many more franchises hurt by critics who care too much about online gameplay
I subbed for the honesty here. It baffles me how bad the ai is. I can't believe how often I got to the end of an encounter only to watch JD and del stand over me as I bled out. The game is fun but it is not worthy of all the praise said it since launch.
I have to agree with the reviewer & add that gears 5 is a major let down #1 reason microtransactions! microtranactions should not even be in games in the first place!!! & u should unlock ever skins or character skin with in the game when u do a objective or unlock a achievement or a trophy. #2 reason is the political correctness with characters like if it's a woman or a man playing a major roll in the games or if they smoke cigarettes or if they don't smoke cigarettes! it should be up to the creators of the games to decide on what they want in their games not SJW calling out what should be in games & what should not be in games if a game or a movie or a song offends some one then don't buy it or don't watch it or don't listen to it why should ever one be censored for a small few of SJW!!!
If they really wanted to go all out with horde make it so you can choose any of character skins Cog, locust/swarm, debee and be able to choose your ultimate and class (or just remove classes). Then add in all enemy types locust, swarm, lambent, and debee, Hell even throw in cog soldiers with locust, and cog heroes in boss waves. Since im on the subect of enemies... where are corpsers, serapedes, tickers, reavers, boomer, and kantus? As far as I now they never explain why all the drones came back but nothing else.

To be honest for myself and many others, we really don't care for the terrible prices for Micro-transactions. I've played Battlefront 2 by EA on launch, and this doesn't even come close to how bad there progression system was, loot box's, cost for CHARACTERS, and overpriced Micro-transactions. I, myself, am really big into Horde. I do think it's much better, but this is my opinion! Sure, some enemy's feel like trash mobs, but that is the point for most of them. Have you been up against a Warden? Or maybe to close to a Cryo Scion? I don't want to make too big of an assumption, but I don't think this RUclipsr has played enough Horde, I don't know how much time he's put into horde. The class systems have been improved, DEFINITELY. I know some people are mad about how nerfed some classes/characters are, like Fahz as the sniper. Isn't that a good think, making the game harder by having you work for your kills, not standing far back, getting one headshot than eight enemies die right beside the enemy. Ults in this game are quite interesting and bring more of a tactical use for them, should you use your Hijack before boss wave or clear a big lane of enemies with a Claw? Your also highlighting a lot of problems in Gears 4, but make it seem like it's a new problem to 5. Deebees have always been boring. At least now some deebees carry bigger weapons, unlike 4 where you had to play special modes or a 25. Ults contribute a lot more than you let on. JD alone can almost 1v1 a Matriarch, he needs to be upgraded in SKILL CARDS not ABILITIES, whatever your referring too. Bleed and extra motors just destroy boss's. The first modifier on difficulty which is 'Survivor' (didn't mention the name, almost like you didn't know it) is quite handy, especially solo queuing. I don't want to waste my time with a trash team who loses early on, it's almost like a notice from the game.
I've been playing Gears since 2007 and it has been my favourite franchise ever since. I really enjoyed this video! It covered everything I was thinking in the back of my head and gave me some much needed clarity on what's wrong and what needs to be fixed/changed. Gears isn’t the same anymore, 4 and 5 are basically what ifs for me. The swarm and deebees are the most uninspired and boring enemies I’ve seen(I mean have you seen the swarmak design). They will never have the same feel that the locust had due to how bright and colorful the graphics are. The in game dialogue will never compare to the first trilogy. It’s a boring and very pg compared to the first trilogy. The story itself still plays it too safe and the new characters are so overplayed and unoriginal. Even the music isn’t even memorable. Honestly they should’ve just brought back the locust without creating a new faction. I did like the new open world exploration tho. Basically everything you critiqued I wholeheartedly agree with

The game is just so boring and I feel myself unenthused to play it. The multiplayer is terrible and clunky, they left out dodgeball as it’s own playlist? I could go on but what a huge fail
Hopefully what you said in the end comes true and that the coalition listens to the true fan base that were here since gears 1 and transform gears 5 into if not something close to gears 1-3 or make gears 6 dark and gritty like gears 1-3 the same way 343 is listening to the true fan base and making halo infinite halo again
Gears 4 and 5 looks too colourful, too neat, too tidy. It's looks like a soap opera/drama. You don't feel like you want to fight ... GO TO WAR. Gears 1 to 3 has that gritty war zone feel that makes you want to get in on the action. The characters and dialogue interaction created a sense of comradie not just within the game but amongst the players as well. What happened to Gears 5? It got political.
Wow! While I admit there are issues with the game itself from a technical standpoint. i disagree with you on almost everyone of your points! How can you attack this game on physics when it plays exactly like the first 3 installments but better improved upon. You make some valid points but most of your complaints are petty.
I think crowbcats video definitely showed the downgrades in physics, but I think it's also true that the micro-transactions are awful, horde is lackluster right now, and classes need to be separate from skins, and the roster for the game is just too small atm. I'm always welcome to hearing out differing opinions though so thanks for engaging in discussion!

As for Horde mode, I like the fac that it took the simple survival method and added layers that constantly changing metagame of skills, powers and abilities the mode brings from the standpoint of team play! I can clearly see the effort the Coalition put into this mode as well as others in increasing this game shelf life. It's easy to point out flaws in about anything these days as nothing is perfect. I always measure success based upon betterment and improved of the experience. And although I concede to flaws this game has, I also concede that this game is better than its predecessors in that, it's one of the most beautiful games in this console gen, good story, great gameplay, excellent cinematics, great controls and, it's a multi platform game, and its packed with multiplayer gaming modes which I can see myself playing for a long time.plus, they just announced that they will be adding operations 1 and 2 within the next couple of months adding New Characters, New Maps and new versus modes. This is tremendous improvement for the Coalition and in my opinion this is what sets them apart from the rest. Thank you for the positive dialogue sir.

I can understand where you're coming from, and I can see why it could be better, I guess for me it's just different than the old horde that I had loved so much. And I'm glad that more content is coming but I think if the roster was twice as big at launch, and had 2 more maps at launch that were bigger for horde that would've helped tremendously!
Shepard Gaming crowbcats video was so nitpicking he only focused on the first act but i see it as a trade off for the graphics and 60fps, the old gears was so clunky and slow to play and the weapon that was viable was the gnasher, I just don’t think that not being able to shoot a damn tomato box is game breaking, not to mention how much the game would lag at times on the 360.this game is running with amazing graphics and at 60fps that’s what matters now. Even the discussion about the gore is silly.

Why tf is wall bouncing so heavily frowned upon it’s a skill that anybody can learn. It prevents you from getting shot at close range and helps you close in on your opponent . Anybody can learn it and it’s a hell of a tool for defense and offense I honestly just don’t get the hate ?
From a story perspective it just odd that they chose to continue this series instead of creating a new IP. The problem is that the original trilogy ended with a climax that destroyed the entire Locust race. Games like Halo can easily continue to make titles because the foes in that series aren’t a single race or faction. The Covenant is a collection of races following a zealous ideology, and that’s why they’ll always be an antagonist. History is full of regimes and religions that have tried to destroy particular ideologies and philosophies. But while you can burn faction you can never completely wipe out an ideology. Why is this important? Well the Covenant can always come back because their belief system, and those that follow its doctrine, can hide and wait for the right moment to return. Yet in Gears that isn’t an option because the Locust didn’t have a real identity or belief system. The Locust were all killed off in 3 and it was a perfect end to a brutal story. Now though it feels like everything that happened in the trilogy was meaningless. All of the characters that died fighting the Locust, that sacrificed themselves to achieve victory, ultimately died for nothing. And yes, the story isn’t over yet, but how long can this series actually continue when the in game world and humans have been so devastated that their population is only a few million? Now Gears 5 has destroyed their current capital and sanctuary city, similar to Gears 2. So what does Humanity do now? I don’t dislike the story entirely, seeing more of the origin of the Locust was pretty cool. And Fahz is great. A certified shitstick, but a pretty big softie under all that armour.
That's actually a great point! They should have done other games in between or during E-day instead of a sequel because it really does make it seem like OG was more or less meaningless
Shepard Gaming Seeing Emergence Day and the complete chaos of it would be an interesting story. They could follow a plot that’s smaller scale in terms of the stakes, by which I mostly mean that there’s nothing we can do to defeat the Locust so the objectives would be quite different. We know that humanity gets completely fucked until Gears 3 so they can’t have a story that ends with a massive victory. But what they can do is tell a character driven narrative. What about a story centred around a squad trying to protect a city, failing to save civilians, and coping with the fact that they have no idea what the hell is going on. Because at that point nobody knows about the Locust, they could make the squad full of untested soldiers that only finished training before shit hit the fan. Then we get to see these fresh faced novices develop into absolute badasses. And definitely keep the legacy characters out of it. No Delta Team. Perhaps Hoffman and some obscure characters could appear, but if the story can’t stand without legacy characters to hold it up, then what was the point of making new characters?
Yeah I really like that idea! Since we know delta squad and etc are a large part of winning the war, playing as another squad and knowing the locust win the battles would've made for a very interesting story!
Shepard Gaming Have the devs spoken about why they had the choice scene at the end of Gears 5, with JD and Del? Because it’s such a strange inclusion, it just came completely out of left field! If the game had a few smaller choices scattered throughout the campaign it would have felt a bit more organic. It seems like there’s a trend to turn older franchises into RPGs, or open world. Assassin’s Creed, Halo 6, Gears 5...
If we’re being honest, aside from the campaigns. Gears of War stopped being amazing at 2. 3 was still pretty good but I thought it was a downgrade from 2 in terms of the multiplayer. 4 and 5 are just garbage. But I’m such a fan I’ll end up continuing this series anyway. Thanks Xbox 😐
I think Gears 5 campaign is very weak. I don't even have the will to play it again to look for collectibles or other things I missed. I'll stick to horde for awhile if my mates play it.

Great vid. Im so glad i didnt spend 60 bucks i have it on game pass at the moment. They need to go back to gears 2 style horde mode and mp. The more slow paced tactical gameplay was more enjoyable. Also the fact i cant play as my character(Dom) pisses me off.
Do agree with some of the issues stated but I will still be picking it up. At least I can say its playable unlike the state that Anthem and Fallout 76 were in at launch? Lastly I don't think no other games hold the record for bad microtransactions and loot boxes than EA and their sport games!

Agree, but gears 3 system of characters isn't for gears 5 anymore. If they;re bringing as many skins as in 4 , then we need another kind of system. It will get boring to have characters only on level. I sincerely liked the loot boxes.

@Jefferson Mason player customization can be in any game, it belongs in gears of war multiplayer because people want to play as their favorite characters with whatever cosmetics they choose. Gears 5 doesn't let them do that and puts nearly everything behind a pay wall.

I bought my first Gears of War game in 2006. I have owned all the series from 1-5 and I can honestly say for the first time I felt disappointed. Three hours into the game I got bored. Gears 5 has no weight and intensity, the dialogue, characters, enemies and game play didn’t do it for me. Felt like I was playing a totally different game. Great graphics though

You hit the nail in the head my man. Like I've said to people who've asked if they should buy it or not... This is a great and fun game (to an extent) if you're looking to try it out on the game pass, but it's not a great GEARS OF WAR game. It certainly feels like a spin off like judgement did. It completely missed what made a gears of war game feel unique and the reason the trilogy are so beloved. Also the reason I got an Xbox 360 and a One is the first place. It is certainly made to appeal more to new comers and casual friendly. But by doing so completely downgraded the whole game for me especially in multiplayer. I went back to the play the first three and just details like the physics, the weight of the characters and the weapons and the intensity of the shooting and the gore and executions really do add up and make a hell of a difference. I actually thought having a new enemy type like the swarm was going to be a cool new enemy for the franchise but it really hasn't. They don't feel threatening like the Locust did and honestly the whole swarm enemy type just looks and feels cartoonish. I really want to like this game because it's gears but I just can't.
Yup that's what people are misunderstanding is it's a good game, but not a good gears game, and while I complained a lot about small things, there's so many of them and when they add up it makes a huge difference in the feel and tone of the game.
It's just like Gears of War Judament it was a pretty game but the multiplayer was for Shit to play!
Horde needs to do away with the “hero” system, I hate being told I have to play as Kait if I want to play the scout role. Not to mention not being able to play duplicate characters. 🙄🙄🙄🙄
The multiplayer feels incomplete. I've put ALOT of time into this game on PC since launch and I've enjoyed it, but I do agree that it is missing some of the elements that previous games had.
Physics feel lazy, customization like skins and weapon camos are lackluster, there's like 6 MP maps, even tho I'm a gold 3 I'm still queuing with bronze players. I hope to see more content soon

So true with the Halo series. It should’ve ended sooner instead of dragging it out for more cash. Worst off are the secret endings you unlock after completing the game on the highest difficulty as they continue to tease the fans about a sequel with each getting worse. Maybe the next Halo game will be better but hard to say till it comes out but I digress.

I'm glad I got to play this game through game pass. I was honestly going to sleep on this because of how awful Gears 4 was with the micro transactions. I've been enjoying how well done the campaign is but there was that one question in the back of my mind. Is the multiplayer good? Seems like this video answers that question, just like Gears 4 it has bad micro transactions probably even worse. When I saw the character roster I thought maybe you had to unlock the others but I clearly didn't learn from Gears 4, of course that's the sad amount of characters they added. Gears of War 3 was the last good Gears game. It had micro transactions in it too but they were reasonable. If I remember correctly you could get about at least 20 skin sets in a Launch Weapon Skin Collection pack that cost $20 and buying a single weapon skin set cost $3. These days just a single weapon skin set cost about $25...Ridiculous.

Gears 4's multiplayer was fine. I didn't spend a dime on it and unlocked almost every character in it over the course of just playing and enjoying it.

I have to agree multiplayer feels like a major downgrade. The downgrade in the gore sucks. If feels slow to me. Automatics are insanely op. You can't even leave cover. Weak maps. It's still a good game but not even close to the best.

Loved the campaign, I felt it was a little short, but yeah the microtransactions and horde are AWFUL. Server issues have also really made the overall experience a real letdown.
Yeah I enjoyed the music and scenery in the campaign, and I really loved the matriarch mission! That felt like classic gears! But besides the story mode yeah I've felt rather let down so far ):

I'm getting to the point now where in-game micro transactions is reason enough to pass on a game. They feel like storefronts with a game wrapped around them. I'll spend my money on games like Remnant: From the Ashes. $40, no micro transactions, loot boxes or DLC; cleary made with love by a Dev team that plays games and understands what gamers want.

Bugs can be solved plus they never know reawards can get better like the team rock wepon skins but they may add classic characters like dom like a gears 3 cosmetics ( with now graphics that would be mint )
I went back to Gears 4 and I’m happier than ever. Gears 4’s Versus is incredibly better than Gears 5’s, plus the fact that NOW is the time to play Gears 4, here’s why:
It’s noob free atm (cause of Gears 5’s launch), it has A LOT of content (maps and Roster), it has a considerably lower population (so servers aren’t crowded and there is basically no lag), and the game and gameplay mechanics are a lot better overall. The movement, the damage omen, 8 gnasher shots per reload, Lancer is at it’s sweet spot (Gears 5’s Lancer is ridiculous), less sponging, normal respawns (Gears 5’s KOTH respawn system is possibly the worst thing in videogames I’ve ever seen in my life 😂), etc.
Gears 4 overall feels like a complete finished product. I’m not going anywhere until TC gives me reasons to.
Yeah that tends to happen with a game after a couple years! 😂 but I agree, it's hard to go from a game with so much content and a lot of issues fixed, to a bare bones sequel with so many issues..
Alfonso González de Cosío shotgun is still shit compared to 5 but ye the whole game is just as a letdown when 4 came out with bearly any characters as well until they added em and I played the game at the end of the life cycle
I can find lobby's in gears 4 again most of the vets seem to have left gears 5. I have allot more fun in gears 4. Gears 5 versus is just full of people pop shotting in every situation because bullet magnetism. Everything is dumbed down to the point it isn't fun to play. I've played since gears 1 and I started playing because it was difficult to play.

I have this game with Game Pass and I found myself happy because it is so well optimized for PC and I can run it so well on Low settings on my outdated PC. (I’m not able to play Wolfenstein 2 because the recommended Memory is 16 while my Machine is 8).
However I’m not a Multiplayer gamer so I definitely understand your criticisms.

Yeah, I fell in love with the campaign, and have enjoyed the entire game throughout on that front, however, I have noticed the changes in Gore and Physics, and I do hope that they make the small changes necessary to where it goes back to that grittiness.
The problems seem to mainly come from Multiplayer itself, however, this is not to say it does not matter, because multiplayer is a big part of Gears, and so they should definitely be addressed.
This video truly is the one and only critique, not a shit rant, but a short, yet very credible critique, which I do very much appreciate.

Character lock is the WORST thing to ever happen to Horde.

Two years later, and I can say that some remedies have been made to all areas of the game. Horde now has character classes to choose from regardless of what character you choose, more characters have finally been introduced, and Versus has finally reverted back to that OG Gears 3 feeling. It just took the Coalition way too long to implement these changes into the game that’s now two years old. The optimization on Series X, made the already great looking game even better with ray traced reflections and real time shadows, etc. Overall, the mechanics across all modes are finally, what the game should have been more like at launch, tbh.
Everything you said is 100% facts. The campaign was fun at first cause there was side missions and you could upgrade Jack (which was really fresh compared to the other gears). But the final boss was a big let down that monster wasn't even challenging. The montriarch was harder than that. Then they leave it on a cliffhanger as if this game is good enough for gears 6. And the multiplayer is just a big dissapointmebt. Nothing new going on except a kill cam whoopdy fucking Doo!!! As a gears fan I'm just as upset as you are and honestly I hope coalition doesn't make anymore titles after this one.

It seemed like for awhile there I was in the minority at realizing the obvious flaws that can be seen at face value, and was surprised the community was defending the game so much. Yeah I think the coalition should honestly try another IP out, gears just isn't the same anymore and the hype around the franchise seems even lower now than it did with gears 4

I hate that you're forced to use the lancer gnasher combo. Gears 3 had it right where you had multiple primary weapons to choose from. Though I hated the sawed-off at least it made the game play different. All I want is the retro and hammer to make a return and I would be satisfied with the multiplayer. Aside from that I agree with everything in this video. I was at the midnight launch of the first gears and haven't missed one. They better take there time AND USE IT WISELY on gow 6

Lets just go back to playing gears 3 and screw the coalition.
Notice how he skipped Gears Judgement. From a OG gears 1,2, and 3 player, Judgement killed the franchise. Gears 4 helped bring back some legacy players but the game wasn’t better than gears 3. Gears 5 is a sorry excuse to keep the franchise alive. In my opinion, gears 3 was the best.

An honest Gears 5 review. Its so rare to see these in the wild. What happened to Gears 5? What happened to Xbox? "But Game Pass is duh future", yeah if Gears 5 is indicative of Xbox's future, Xbox doesn't have one. God forbid they look at their competition (that's kicking the crap out of them) and learn anything. Sony leads the way with record setting sales and quality and Microsoft goes "Nah, lets just give our games away for free and load them up with micro-transactions. Success achieved!"

Sorry, but I’m going to join the rant here. I returned from deployment, excited to play this game, being a long time fan from the original. I heard some of my good friends, who were also fans, tell me they were disappointed with this game. I couldn’t believe it and had to find out myself. I JUST finished the campaign and tried Horde/escape and right away did not like the major changes. Everything you said hit the nail on the head. They’re trying too much to be like other popular shooters and not like Gears. Changing the name itself is a slap in the face! I watched a couple of other videos about the game, just to get further info on the mechanics and something as little as changing the active reload really insulted me. Like, why would you change that?! The campaign itself didn’t even provide any real story progression. I don’t wanna post any spoilers, but between gears of War 4 and this entry, there isn’t much progression. And maybe I’m just old school, but I prefer the linear gameplay that the previous Gears has. Not the explore here and there and go to a certain point to progress. That’s annoying. One more thing. They should bring back the 4 player co-op! There was nothing more enjoyable then playing this game’s campaign with my 3 friends who all loved the series! To share the emotions of seeing the story progress was special! Damn the gaming industry on trying to get all shooters to focus on competition like MLG. Same issue with Halo 5. Exact same. End rant.
What I'm still trying to figure out is how I was able to play the entire campaign on the highest settings yet when I go to versus my graphics card stops working once I join a game.

Great video mate! This video needs more views. One thing you forgot to mention was Jack and how at first he was pretty fun to play in horde mode but he gets REALLY damn boring later on if you've played him long enough. The Coalition should make his Hijack recharge faster or give him more support abilities then healing your teammates and stunning enemies for them to shoot that are more engaging.

Outside of lagswitching and lack of dedicated servers for multiplayer, Gears of War 2 was the best one. Best maps(jacinto, blood drive, security... I mean come on this game only had two shitty maps-hail and stasis), Best campaign, best characters, best modes(wingman and guardian were created in this game), best gameplay movement. This game was truly a masterpiece.

this tugged some heartstrings. My first gears was 3, i chose that over cod: black ops 1. Just fell in love at sight, that lancer made me gasp when i looked at the cover art. Damn i was 8 when i got it, turned 10 played the other 2 games to get more in depth with Delta squad. Im 16 now, and this "gears 5" is the spider-man 3 of the franchise. Gears 5 felt like people were told to scrape a game together by a big studio. Gears 1-3 was passion and love put into the game, i mean goddamnit PEOPLES FACES AND QUOTES OF THEM THANKING LOVED ONES WERE AT THE END OF GEARS 1-3, REAL PEOPLE THAT HAD PASSION. But this, this is just a bunch of micro transactions and shit wearing the skin of the gears of war franchise. What a shame.

Multiplayer and other game modes are okay but the meat of the Gears series is in the Storyline that you play. I could care less about anything else. The story is the reason why I got hooked on Gears. Same for Halo, Mass Effect and many more franchises hurt by critics who care too much about online gameplay

If they really wanted to go all out with horde make it so you can choose any of character skins Cog, locust/swarm, debee and be able to choose your ultimate and class (or just remove classes). Then add in all enemy types locust, swarm, lambent, and debee, Hell even throw in cog soldiers with locust, and cog heroes in boss waves. Since im on the subect of enemies... where are corpsers, serapedes, tickers, reavers, boomer, and kantus? As far as I now they never explain why all the drones came back but nothing else.

To be honest for myself and many others, we really don't care for the terrible prices for Micro-transactions. I've played Battlefront 2 by EA on launch, and this doesn't even come close to how bad there progression system was, loot box's, cost for CHARACTERS, and overpriced Micro-transactions. I, myself, am really big into Horde. I do think it's much better, but this is my opinion! Sure, some enemy's feel like trash mobs, but that is the point for most of them. Have you been up against a Warden? Or maybe to close to a Cryo Scion? I don't want to make too big of an assumption, but I don't think this RUclipsr has played enough Horde, I don't know how much time he's put into horde. The class systems have been improved, DEFINITELY. I know some people are mad about how nerfed some classes/characters are, like Fahz as the sniper. Isn't that a good think, making the game harder by having you work for your kills, not standing far back, getting one headshot than eight enemies die right beside the enemy. Ults in this game are quite interesting and bring more of a tactical use for them, should you use your Hijack before boss wave or clear a big lane of enemies with a Claw? Your also highlighting a lot of problems in Gears 4, but make it seem like it's a new problem to 5. Deebees have always been boring. At least now some deebees carry bigger weapons, unlike 4 where you had to play special modes or a 25. Ults contribute a lot more than you let on. JD alone can almost 1v1 a Matriarch, he needs to be upgraded in SKILL CARDS not ABILITIES, whatever your referring too. Bleed and extra motors just destroy boss's. The first modifier on difficulty which is 'Survivor' (didn't mention the name, almost like you didn't know it) is quite handy, especially solo queuing. I don't want to waste my time with a trash team who loses early on, it's almost like a notice from the game.
I've been playing Gears since 2007 and it has been my favourite franchise ever since. I really enjoyed this video! It covered everything I was thinking in the back of my head and gave me some much needed clarity on what's wrong and what needs to be fixed/changed. Gears isn’t the same anymore, 4 and 5 are basically what ifs for me. The swarm and deebees are the most uninspired and boring enemies I’ve seen(I mean have you seen the swarmak design). They will never have the same feel that the locust had due to how bright and colorful the graphics are. The in game dialogue will never compare to the first trilogy. It’s a boring and very pg compared to the first trilogy. The story itself still plays it too safe and the new characters are so overplayed and unoriginal. Even the music isn’t even memorable. Honestly they should’ve just brought back the locust without creating a new faction. I did like the new open world exploration tho. Basically everything you critiqued I wholeheartedly agree with

Gears 4 and 5 looks too colourful, too neat, too tidy. It's looks like a soap opera/drama. You don't feel like you want to fight ... GO TO WAR.
Gears 1 to 3 has that gritty war zone feel that makes you want to get in on the action. The characters and dialogue interaction created a sense of comradie not just within the game but amongst the players as well.

How can you attack this game on physics when it plays exactly like the first 3 installments but better improved upon. You make some valid points but most of your complaints are petty.
I think crowbcats video definitely showed the downgrades in physics, but I think it's also true that the micro-transactions are awful, horde is lackluster right now, and classes need to be separate from skins, and the roster for the game is just too small atm. I'm always welcome to hearing out differing opinions though so thanks for engaging in discussion!

As for Horde mode, I like the fac that it took the simple survival method and added layers that constantly changing metagame of skills, powers and abilities the mode brings from the standpoint of team play! I can clearly see the effort the Coalition put into this mode as well as others in increasing this game shelf life. It's easy to point out flaws in about anything these days as nothing is perfect. I always measure success based upon betterment and improved of the experience. And although I concede to flaws this game has, I also concede that this game is better than its predecessors in that, it's one of the most beautiful games in this console gen, good story, great gameplay, excellent cinematics, great controls and, it's a multi platform game, and its packed with multiplayer gaming modes which I can see myself playing for a long time.plus, they just announced that they will be adding operations 1 and 2 within the next couple of months adding New Characters, New Maps and new versus modes. This is tremendous improvement for the Coalition and in my opinion this is what sets them apart from the rest. Thank you for the positive dialogue sir.

I can understand where you're coming from, and I can see why it could be better, I guess for me it's just different than the old horde that I had loved so much. And I'm glad that more content is coming but I think if the roster was twice as big at launch, and had 2 more maps at launch that were bigger for horde that would've helped tremendously!
Shepard Gaming crowbcats video was so nitpicking he only focused on the first act but i see it as a trade off for the graphics and 60fps, the old gears was so clunky and slow to play and the weapon that was viable was the gnasher, I just don’t think that not being able to shoot a damn tomato box is game breaking, not to mention how much the game would lag at times on the 360.this game is running with amazing graphics and at 60fps that’s what matters now. Even the discussion about the gore is silly.

Why tf is wall bouncing so heavily frowned upon it’s a skill that anybody can learn. It prevents you from getting shot at close range and helps you close in on your opponent . Anybody can learn it and it’s a hell of a tool for defense and offense I honestly just don’t get the hate ?

From a story perspective it just odd that they chose to continue this series instead of creating a new IP. The problem is that the original trilogy ended with a climax that destroyed the entire Locust race. Games like Halo can easily continue to make titles because the foes in that series aren’t a single race or faction. The Covenant is a collection of races following a zealous ideology, and that’s why they’ll always be an antagonist.
History is full of regimes and religions that have tried to destroy particular ideologies and philosophies. But while you can burn faction you can never completely wipe out an ideology. Why is this important? Well the Covenant can always come back because their belief system, and those that follow its doctrine, can hide and wait for the right moment to return. Yet in Gears that isn’t an option because the Locust didn’t have a real identity or belief system.
The Locust were all killed off in 3 and it was a perfect end to a brutal story. Now though it feels like everything that happened in the trilogy was meaningless. All of the characters that died fighting the Locust, that sacrificed themselves to achieve victory, ultimately died for nothing. And yes, the story isn’t over yet, but how long can this series actually continue when the in game world and humans have been so devastated that their population is only a few million? Now Gears 5 has destroyed their current capital and sanctuary city, similar to Gears 2. So what does Humanity do now?
I don’t dislike the story entirely, seeing more of the origin of the Locust was pretty cool. And Fahz is great. A certified shitstick, but a pretty big softie under all that armour.
That's actually a great point! They should have done other games in between or during E-day instead of a sequel because it really does make it seem like OG was more or less meaningless
Shepard Gaming Seeing Emergence Day and the complete chaos of it would be an interesting story. They could follow a plot that’s smaller scale in terms of the stakes, by which I mostly mean that there’s nothing we can do to defeat the Locust so the objectives would be quite different. We know that humanity gets completely fucked until Gears 3 so they can’t have a story that ends with a massive victory. But what they can do is tell a character driven narrative.
What about a story centred around a squad trying to protect a city, failing to save civilians, and coping with the fact that they have no idea what the hell is going on. Because at that point nobody knows about the Locust, they could make the squad full of untested soldiers that only finished training before shit hit the fan. Then we get to see these fresh faced novices develop into absolute badasses. And definitely keep the legacy characters out of it. No Delta Team. Perhaps Hoffman and some obscure characters could appear, but if the story can’t stand without legacy characters to hold it up, then what was the point of making new characters?
Yeah I really like that idea! Since we know delta squad and etc are a large part of winning the war, playing as another squad and knowing the locust win the battles would've made for a very interesting story!
Shepard Gaming Have the devs spoken about why they had the choice scene at the end of Gears 5, with JD and Del? Because it’s such a strange inclusion, it just came completely out of left field! If the game had a few smaller choices scattered throughout the campaign it would have felt a bit more organic.
It seems like there’s a trend to turn older franchises into RPGs, or open world. Assassin’s Creed, Halo 6, Gears 5...
I forgot how good gears 3 got it right. Truly the best game of all gears.

I slightly liked gears 2's story better!
Shepard Gaming same, gears 2 has the best campaign. But overall as a whole game, gears 3 is the best.
If we’re being honest, aside from the campaigns. Gears of War stopped being amazing at 2. 3 was still pretty good but I thought it was a downgrade from 2 in terms of the multiplayer. 4 and 5 are just garbage. But I’m such a fan I’ll end up continuing this series anyway. Thanks Xbox 😐
I actually still enjoyed gears 3 and gears 4 multiplayer but gears 5 completely lost me
It’s so sad to see what’s happening too my favorite series with every thing just feeling like a down grade from previous games

I think Gears 5 campaign is very weak. I don't even have the will to play it again to look for collectibles or other things I missed.
I'll stick to horde for awhile if my mates play it.
Yeah I didn't enjoy the open world part tbh
For me it's sad to see Gears like this the Campaign is so good but the Hord & VS are so Bad right now I told my little brother don't buy it just wanted until a sale....for me the core of the multiplayer is not FUN!

We’re sitting here complaining about micro transactions but the REAL issue is the broken Multiplayer. I’ll be back on Gears 5 in a year when they decide to “fix” it.
After gears 3 "Epic games" left development of the gears series due to Microsoft greed and issues, now gears 4 &5 develop by "THE COALITION" now do you know why gears getting worse!
Yeah TC definitely monetized this game in pretty greedy ways

Great vid. Im so glad i didnt spend 60 bucks i have it on game pass at the moment. They need to go back to gears 2 style horde mode and mp. The more slow paced tactical gameplay was more enjoyable. Also the fact i cant play as my character(Dom) pisses me off.

I was actually kind of dissapointed I'm already playing the old ones I'm a big gears of war fan it really doesn't feel like the gears we know at all

Do agree with some of the issues stated but I will still be picking it up. At least I can say its playable unlike the state that Anthem and Fallout 76 were in at launch? Lastly I don't think no other games hold the record for bad microtransactions and loot boxes than EA and their sport games!
Oh this game is easily 100x better than Anthem lol, and 76 for that matter! Yes I agree EA's sports game loot boxes and etc are still the worst overall in the industry!
