- Hoyt Axton performs "Della and the Dealer" live at the Farm Aid concert in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985. Nobody could sing the low notes like Hoyt!
His appearance in WKRP was fantastic. It really showed his acting ability. And of course this song was introduced to millions of people.
He was great in all those weekly shows in the 70s when my family would still gather around one TV and work trades on what we watched. Do a little comedy skit. Then sing one of his great songs he wrote. Or the Love Boat/Fantasy Island thing all the stars did, but he was always so real in his acting.
Hoyt axton is absolutely awesome
Hoyt was a damn good story teller. And that's what it was all about back then,,, telling a story.
Good country music still is.
love this song, never be another Hoyt Axton
Robin Andersen No there surely wont. Its all about good looks now...
Glen and they use auto-tune to fix the "singer's" voice, and the stuff they write......
Robin Andersen I keep hearing that they do this, but I think "How come they STILL sound awful!"
I was there. Champaign, Illinois 1985. What a day. Never seen so many people in my life. Just a 22 year old pup. Where have the years gone?
It flies by. Just heard this on WKRP. Hope all is well, 6 years after your comment.
One of my clear memories of that day was when he came out on stage and said “Hi, I’m what’s left of Hoyt Axton”. I’m happy RUclips came along and is replaying these awsome memories!
I sure miss Hoyt! There will never be another like him!
Just a really genuine down to earth guy. Hoyt never let his fame go to his head. RIP
I first heard this song on an episode of WKRP in Cincinnati. I’ve loved it ever since. 👍
Me too! 🤭❣
One never gets tired of hearing this darn tune. So catchy.
If I had a choice of voices it would be no contest, love you Hoyt !😀
I mainly listen to rock/metal & new wave. Not a big country fan but damn I love Hoyt Axton. R.I.P big man. 😊
My first introduction to Hoyt was on the last Episode of Pernell Roberts as Adam in Bonanza in "Dead and Gone" 1965, I was captivated in their duets and love listening to Hoyt ever since!
I will have to check that out. I’m from Waycross where Pernell Roberts is from. In fact my Great grandmother lived exactly a block from him. His grand kids still live there. I came to Hoyt by way of another musician Townes Van Zandt. I grew up in Houston where Townes is from. Love Hoyt.
Hoyt Axton back in 1985 during a live performance of Farm Aid.
Brings back a lot of memories as my dad loved this song and now my 12 yr old nephew laughs and just loves it
I first saw him in Bonanza singing with Pernell Roberts. Since then I have been in love with this great, powerful voice. I listen to his songs very often. Hoyt Axton was a great artist.
great song .. well done Hoyt !
I miss that music style.
Magic! They drove a pickup and this song is a pick me up. Thank you .
Hoyt! I've never been to Spain, but I know I love your music and acting! Used to love watching you when our whole family shared a TV and saw you on those weekly 70s & 80s TV shows.
A true legend
I wish I could have seen him
I love it.
Class
An absolute legend. Still love him.
Brilliant !!!
This could Really be the BIG ONE
Great song, he wrote many inc for Steppenwolf and he was great in the movie Gremlins
I'm what's left!!! what on earth there was so much more?
Great video of Hoyt singing his famous song Della and the dealer
I first saw him on
“WKRP in Cincinnati “
He was Jennifer’s (Loni Anderson) old boyfriend he came asking her to play this record he made .
Jonny Fever played it at the end of show
r.i.p hoyt. lovely song
None Better!!!!!
The guitarist on this gives a great example how to play rythem and lead at the same time behind a vocal.
I met Hoyt at the Jamboree in the Hills in the early 80's. He was ok, Mae was there too.
Bonanza was where I 1st remember him
R.I.P
What a cool cat!
Incredible at 00.47 from the side shot you can see the toe of the left foot go perfectly in time without moving the foot, those toes seem independent from the body. 😄
Brilliant song !!.... yes, the 3 ladies are fantastic. Is any one able to identify them ??
Michael Traynor the blonde name is Janalee Eberly my mom..the Diana Dewitt and the redhead first name Sloan n I can't think of her last name.. she only toured couple times with Hoyt
He's cute
Hoyt was West Coast Country.
Anyone know who the backup singers were???
Great. who were those backupsingers? The thin brunette in the middle and the one to her left are knockouts. The blonde is cute too but can't see her as well.
+bacsi19461 The brunette looks like Lorde from NZ.
Lorde wasn't born until 1996 and my belief is that the brunette is Diana DeWitt
bacsi19461 that is Diana..the blonde women in the red pants is my momma Janalee Eberly haha miss you uncle Hoyt
They are great and the whole band is as well - definitely the best version of this song I've seen. RIP Hoyt.
Uncle Bubba Ray Kings Song
yee ahh
Is the redhead Diana Dewitt? The brunette really looks familiar, but I cannot call her name.
I think that the dark haired girl is more likely to be Diana DeWitt. I cannot find out anything conclusive but she does resemble the singer in the duo Venus and Mars.

Gu
"he snorted his coke through a century note"
The biggest problem with Farmaid is, no matter who was performing the people on the stage behind the performers always looked like had a gun to the head of the performers loved ones whom they were prepared to do some serious damage to if the performers didn't perform well enuf. And all the performers were constantly casting nervous glances at those serious looking folks the whole time they were singing.
+riverratt101 In this clip, the reason they all looked so nervous is because it was raining and you could see the water dripping off that mic, water , instruments, and microphones and electricity don't mix. Hoyt and a lot of others were probably wondering when the power was going to arc back off that mic and short out and electrocute someone.
i dont think they look nervous, as a rule but in this clip I think its obvious they are all worrying about the rain and trying to keep things safe...
Sadly far too fast.
