I'm a brown girlie myself who grew up watching Lilly, but I stopped watching her in recent years (before the late night show was even released). It feels like this is the first time in a hot minute where I've seen her so genuine. I personally can't digest her content as easily anymore, but I can still respect her as a person for admitting the flaws and addressing her failures.

I feel if she started a small company (like coffee company/stationary company or something) and would be a vlogger on top of that, her youtube channel would get so popular again. She is a likeable person.
Mad respect for her not blaming her show writers, she could've easily thrown them under the bus and we'd all be none the wiser. But she gave them credit for being spread so thin and being under so much pressure and budget that it just was what it was.
Her biggest problem is thinking everyone already hated her for her ethnicity and gender and also because she was forced into a role of an elderly straight white man talk show host when she's a millennial bisexual brown woman

There was so much pressure because she was the only female POC in late night and people really love to generalize a group based on a representative and when she’s taking that place of a representative that’s a lot of weight on her shoulders so even if no one was saying anything negative, her race and gender still added this extra layer of difficulty.

I can give her the first episode and even then I would not constantly mention it but after that I would move on into just generalized content or at least specifically avoiding claiming how different you are.
It takes a lot of humility and strength to publicly admit failure. To fail in such a public way is already embarrassing, but to have the strength to acknowledge it publicly and talk about how the system needs to change is very admirable! I love how Lily is using her bad experience to start a conversation about the TV industry lack of diversity and lack of support for diverse projects. I'm impressed with the strength of character Lily has.
One thing I would like Lily to answer is if she knew that a lot of the stuff that was written for the show was bad and she saw the criticisms that people like. Drew gooden made, was she able to take his criticism for what it was or did she conflate it as one of the haters? Same with Eddie burback. I don't know about the other creators that made videos because honestly I either forgot about them or have never watched it. But those two made pretty good criticisms in good faith

Honestly, hearing Lily talk about the process of late night show production, her feelings and lack of knowledge on late night show makes me look at her show in a different light. She has a very strong personality and I commend her for trying out late show! Now that she knows and has a better understanding of late show, I hope she can take similar ventures knowing what she knows now!
I don't get one thing though. She says she shot 96 episodes in 3 months. Doesn't that make it like 1 episode a day? Why did they shoot like 3 a day? Shouldn't the shoot have ended in like a month?

dude, she grew up in Canada, not some small village in India in the 1800s. that whole 2nd daughter thing is almost non-existent in immigrant families that are raised in the west (coming from an American who grew up w/ a VERY similar cultural upbringing as her) for the record, i thought some of her youtube skits/impersonations were actually decent. but her standup and late night show were absolutely horrendous, and constantly invoking the "barriers" (gender, culture, sexual orientation) repeatedly and claiming victim mentality got pathetic, EXTREMELY fast
i think most ppl dont realize that lily never 'lost' the charisma she had back when we were kids, she was just put in a position where she was pretty much set up to fail by a unforgiving industry

As an Indian girl, Lilly CARRIED my early teenage years. This video was the first thing I’d seen of her after such a long time and turns out, I still love her so much. There’s just way too much hate and I’m happy she seems to have grown out of it
This comment section is very positive which is weird because usually when her name gets brought up it's to talk about how awful her content is. In the last several years I've never heard any positive things about her. Her name only ever appears next to the words cringe or unfunny. It's good to see positivity for her.
Think it just goes to show how much people love authenticity. Don't watch her content, not my thing but LOVED this interview and she came across very humble yet authentic and really changed my overall view on her
I like this side of Lilly. This Lilly is the one that needs a show. This Lilly was the reason why I subbed to her channel. The person on Late Night felt like someone who was desperate for validation. The person here is wise and is owning up to her mistakes and is growing. Love that.
As a brown woman myself, I always thought she represented me in some way. Whether you hate her or love her, you have to agree on the impact she has created. To this day, this woman works hard just to satisfy herself and I relate so much to that. No matter how many "failures" she goes through, I will never not appreciate this women. Thank you, Lilly.
So good to hear her side of the process in the aftermath of her show. At the time yeah it wasn't the best show but people really used it as a way to just insult and blame her over things she didn't fully have control over. It seems like its a running thing of having to deal with lots of factors of a big production going wrong but having to suck it up and smile since you're the face of the operation that you have in common with your last Defy years at smosh and Lilly with her show

I’ve watched half so far and this has really put into perspective what happen with the late night show. I’m not savvy on how television works and this was eye opening for me on how difficult her path has been. Thank you for this. I feel so much better about the whole thing after hearing her story because I was confused. I had such a positive view of her before late night and I didn’t understand what had happened. It just didn’t seem like her.
It’s actually so insane to film 3 episodes a day and have to write in between that somehow so the fact it even aired is impressive. Like how could anyone be expected to produce good work like that? I never knew that and have so much respect for her knowing that now

this is such an interesting conversation considering Anthony's experience with badly written and received movies. Large production is really exciting but writers that pander to trends really fail the talent.
I've always really agreed with what Brittany Broski said about Lilly and her show, which is that it was set up to fail, and it's interesting to see Lilly acknowledge that. The late night scene was just not made for people like Lilly, which sucks, but at the same time, those types of shows are dying. The era of late night is pretty much over; the most views they get are here on RUclips with shorter clips. If the genre wants to survive, they have to adapt.
I'm really proud of her progress , she's grown into such a self aware , honest and lovely woman fr and I'm glad we finally got her perspective on the late night show . I can't even imagine how stressful and painful it must've been to create something of that sort, then get so much hate on that and her youtube channel as a result aswell. I'm glad she has a healthier work life balance now though :3 , and yeah getting an elderly relative of admit they are wrong WOW that is one heck of an achievement , I'm really proud of her
I was such a huge fan of Lilly growing up, but I grew out of the youtube skits and never really got into late night so I stopped watching her content. I actually loved her vlogs during the How to be a Bawse book tour. She has such a bright and uplifting personality, her jokes were genuinely funny and resonated with me as a bi brown girl and I cannot wait to see what she does next. She is a good creator before anything else and I'm proud of her.
I admire how she is able to admit she falied but that it led her to learning a lot of new things. It is not very common to see that online you usually only see succes stories or people pretending failure never ocurred.

Less alienated by my peers and the lack of representation that I see. I always feel like I’m not enough because I’m mixed, and the people from similar locations I compare myself to look so different. So it’s really comforting seeing a similar eye shape and eyebrow shape and jawline and yeah that’s it
Lilly's humor and videos have never really been my style, but seeing how she is able to turn a negative experience most people would let destroy them into a learning experience and something she can look back on and see the positives is so respectable and insane. She seems like an amazing person and is super motivational
This is the most honest interview I've seen in a while, I'll admit I wasn't a huge fan of the late night show but I just chalked it up to not knowing Lilly that much like most other late night hosts, all in all NBC really gave her and the people behind the scenes the short end of the stick when it came to making a first impression on TV and I hope everyone involved is doing better now.
PLEASE can you spend a day with *young widows*. Demystify grief, how to help someone in bereavement, what to say and not to say, secondary losses, all those subjects are not known. Especially secondary losses.. the list is long and heartbreakingly true. A lot of grief counselor are widows like Elizabeth Kupferman and Megan Devine.

I’ve always struggled with self esteem, and listening to her talk through and both own her shit AND realize she wasn’t set up for success at the same time, it just makes me reflect on my own life and feel better about my experiences and where I’m at now. I'm so happy to see what seems like a fairly genuine conversation from her side of things. I vividly remember the moment I discovered her videos when I was 12 and I was OBSESSED with her. I remember thinking I was so cool because I had subscribed to her before she had even reached 100k subscribers lol. she was one of my top 10 favourite creators for quite a while, but as I got older, I kind of outgrew the target audience. I'm 24 now, and since I stopped watching her stuff a few years ago I have always silently cheered her on. I was bummed to see that her show hadn't been going well and that it didn't seem to be well recieved, because I did think she had the potential to make a decent show. it's nice to hear her perspective about what that process was like, and I can't even imagine how hard it was for her to go through not only all the show stuff during covid, but all the backlash and hatred she got afterwards. I really do wish her the best and I think she has a really important voice and story to share.
Great to hear all this in Lilly's words. For a long time everyone's been shitting on her and her failed show, including me which I now regret, but people fail all the time. Hell, she probably did a better job than I could.

I think for a lot of people gender equality is something they hear about from someone else, but for others it's about their lives and trauma. And when you're so determined that you can "prove" something, people's expectations will be really high. The reality is that sometimes you can work 15 hours a day and do your best and still not get what you wanted, but it's healthier to think about it as a learning experience because something did come off it. A failure for me is if you are the same as when you started.
She used to be my role model for a long time and I had forgotten why I loved her so much when I was younger since her recent content didn't appeal to me but this interview warmed my heart and reminded me why in the first place I started looking up to her as a teen
Honestly I can see Lilly doing a RUclips video podcast where she brings in her guests like she did with her talk show. But it will be more chill and in control and she can keep showing the world her charm ans charisma
Imagine someone telling you how life is like in an ethnic culture. A culture you know very little about or only have second hand experience dealing with, and you believe you’re so smart and so universal that you discredit them almost immediately… That’s what a lot of comments are looking like here

Honestly, I totally understand the greed for more in context of gender equality. As a girl, I always feel the need to compete with men… whether it be in projects, humor or simply fashion (it’s not healthy lol)
Lily is absolutely right, every project that attempts something new can inspire greatness. Most people only talk about the successful projects that inspire them, but just as important are the projects that failed and taught you something. Anyone who considers starting a new show like Late Night can learn a lot from what happened with Lily. They can ask questions, they can do research, they can say no if it feels too similar to what went wrong with Lily. Hope to see more Lily soon!

This is what people need to realize when it comes to show business. Lots of people online love to hate on a show. If it didn't meet their expectations (that are impossible to achieve sometimes) they say "oh, the writing is horrible" "the actor doesn't know how to act" but fail to see that there could have been a bigger issue from the start. Why did the WGA strike happen? Not only because people were not getting paid enough for their work, but productions were suffering from constraints like these. Less of a budget? Less time to make the show/movie.
I may not like her content, but at the very least I can respect what she has achieved and the self awareness she has, especially about the late night show

Honestly I think she needs to take more accountability for her part in the failure of her show tbh. Like it’s still like she’s blind to and doesn’t acknowledge what her role was and how that ended up impacting the show very negatively.
As a woman, hearing her talk about changing her grandfather’s mind, brought me to tears. Our cultures are very different, but being a woman in any culture is a struggle. Lilly is so badass and inspiring.

You make it sound like they’re these corrupt places but again that’s a generalization. Some places like the Middle East and North Korea may be inflicted with war or tyranny, but not all parts of the rest of the world is like that. I’m from China, and I’ve lived there before. It may also depend on circumstance, but my family grew up poor, yet when staying in China for some time, my quality of life felt the same.

Women in other cultures outside of the western world, def experience another level of oppression, sexism, and prejudices. So, Lily, coming from a culture where women aren’t seen as equal in any sense, for her to still bust through those barriers, is so inspiring- not just for women in her culture, but women in all cultures bc we all face some type of oppression; different levels of oppression, but all some kind of oppression.
@@amycooks_food Yes, China is getting richer and is able to provide a better and better life for its citizens, but the human rights record is awful compared to any western country in 2023. Countries like China and Russia have sizeable middle classes that can afford things westerners can afford, but that doesn't change the fact that those governments continue to abuse the rights of their citizens.
As a woman from one of the countries you mentioned, it is indeed hard to be a woman EVERYWHERE. Some countries have it harder but that shouldn’t be used to trivialize the type of problems women face in the western world.

As an Indian, I too was low key freaking out about the shoes 😅. Okay, Okay. Haven't seen much of Lily since the pandemic because she just felt so defensive and in denial of her very evident failure, which is totally okay to have in life. I really do feel like NBC set Lilly up to fail with the talk show especially with with the whole filming months in advance. I didn't like it too much but hey at least she tried & so did all the writers & crew. And she's still going ahead with life & admitting to fails & doing things she wants & likes.

I have incredible respect for Lilly. She was very influential to me when I was a teenager and started the process of me realizing not only that I was queer but that it was okay for me to be queer. She is someone who stands firmly on her values and morals and it's very inspirational to me. Thanks for having her on.

Used to watch Lilly a lot, haven’t watched much of her content in the last 7 years but I’m very proud of her for growing, learning, healing and talking about it. I remember her being legit one of the first big female poc on yt and I could relate to her videos about family and culture. Feels very nostalgic hearing her speak.
Listening to Lily describe how the show was made really puts my feelings and thoughts about the show into context. I didn't stay up late enough to watch, but I did catch stuff on RUclips after. I remember thinking the tone didn't feel right and it wasn't as fun as her RUclips presence had been. The behind the scenes look makes everything make so much more sense. I'm so glad she's settled that part of her career and has learned a lot from it. I can't wait to see what she does next. 😊
You know what's actually unfunny is how quickly the people who already weren't interested in her content came out of the shadows to criticize her late night show that they probably weren't interested in either. But as soon as they caught a whiff of "uh oh it's not going too well" they all came out to pile shit on her. I remember seeing commentaries from people and thinking "you don't even look like you knew or cared for her OR her content, why are you suddenly talking like she betrayed your entire existence?" Like people were being THAT dramatic with the hate. Like y'all don't even hate on WARS this viciously. Just ignoring, not giving the show the views & leaving comments like "meh. not good. Isn't working" etc etc would have been enough.
I hope while she avoided most videos about her that she saw Drew Gooden’s video on it. It says things I think deserved critique about the smug persona/putting others down vibe, but still shows so much respect and love for her. I hope she’s in a better place now. Seeing all these youtubers from my childhood come out and be honest about their journey has been really helpful as I transition to similar problems in life. I mean, I'm not in the 'creator' life at all as a career scientist, but in many ways the struggle of being placed where you are unprepared and making the best of it...that is something I've encountered time after time. I havent seen anything from Singh in years but she seems incredibly genuine and smart in this interview. I hope to hear more about what she does.
Used to watch Lilly at least 4 or 5 years ago. Have to say it was pretty cool to just see two people have a healthy conversation about figuring themselves out
i watched lilly when she was just doing youtube, like the old videos before the fancy intro with the rainbow on. She was a role model for me honestly. Then i just grew up and just stopped watching her, way beforeeee the late night thing. But heard about the drama of course. but didnt even watched it, because no matter what, Lilly was a role model for me because of the person she showed in her videos and still clearly shows in this interview to be: honest, self aware, funny, kind, love spreading unicorn, so wise, spiritual, phylosophical, and just real. So happy to see her in a good place mentally and taking care of herself.
I grew up watching her. I was adopted from India into a white family in Midwestern America. I did not grow up with diversity. Finding Lilly was such a blessing because it felt like I finally found a lifeline when I was perpetually drowning. When I was at the age when I watched her obsessively I really didn’t know where to even begin with connecting with my culture. She gave me to push to start watching Bollywood and listening to music. I can’t say I’ve made as much progress as I’d like but I am now 22 and exponentially more comfortable in my exploration of my own culture. I needed someone like her growing up. She was my superwoman. Despite her faults and how many people of the desi diaspora feel about her, I will always hold love for heart. I am so grateful for her. I hope to see more of her impact in media and the industry because she paved the way for me to be authentically me.
Good question! If you watch the rest of the interview, she specifies that their time constraints were so extreme, they had to prioritize speed over quality and publish things they knew were poor quality. More time equates to more quality, and they didn't have that.
@jauxro more excuses. Every host that starts from ground up is low budget and in a time crunch. It's about doing your homework, which she said she didn't do since she didn't even know what late night was, also taking constructive criticism. It's no doubt Lilly is a hard worker, but working harder is not always the best thing. Like the saying goes, work smarter, not harder, and she definitely wasn't smart. The reason people fell in love with her in the first place was because she was original and relatable. Her show didn't show any of that, and when people tried to tell her, she didn't listen. Her loss

As a person who has produced on Broadway and Lincoln Centre going straight from college, and learning some shit the HARD WAY, I can identify with the lessons learned. And, it also hit hard being the first doing Indian productions in a white world. I still kick myself for not knowing things, but I am proud of my work to bring awareness to abuse and domestic violence, and being the first before an Indian stage production on a Broadway stage. I did it! I learned! Bravo to her, great attitude. She's right about success, it's ALL ABOUT our prospective. And people who WON"T or NEVER WILL DO, will tear you a part.
lilly was THE representation for brown girlies on yt for YEARS. 9 yr old me was so grateful to finally see a girl like me talking abt typical brown scenarios. tho i rarely see her pop up on my feed now, i still have sm respect for her for making me laugh all these years and admitting to her flaws. i genuinely didnt even think her show was THAT bad til i saw people critiquing her dialogues and how bleak they were. im so proud of how far shes made and how she takes accountability for the show not being a hit instead of throwing the blame onto the people who went into the writing, producing, etc of it
I will always love Lilly Singh. I will always be grateful for her being there when I was growing into myself. She was the role model I needed at that point in my life. Hearing her talk about her failures & hardships is so surreal.

I loved this entire interview. I love seeing both of you so open and so honest to yourself and each other about the difficulties you're facing, the things that've happened and the realities you live in. I teared up when I heard what Lilly had to say about her family because damn that familial pressure really hits different if you're in that type of culture. I hope we all strive to be like both of you, confident, driven, and balanced.
She's not telling the truth. Her show didnt purely exist during the pandemic. She had a full failing season 1 in the can when the pandemic hit. She had about 16 months pre-pandemic. Season 2 was during it, but Season 1 did so bad, they were already debating about a Season 2.
This was such a lovely conversation. She seems so happy and her company sounds like it's doing so well. I also was stressed when she had her shoes on the couch.
As an indian. Gender inequality is not something that is every home or society in general(speaking from a middle class perspective ). It is more prevelant in economically suffering housholds/neighbourhoods. I am 18 so i have a better idea of the recent culture rather than the old culture. My mom used to tell me that girls weren't valued as much in her time but she was lucky to have parents who weren't like that but now this is generally not a problem. People have evolved very quick in the last decade. So what lily is saying is something that used to be a thing but is not anymore in most households.
I wonder if diaspora comes into effect, because my British-Indian friends comment on the gender inequality a lot. About five years ago my Pakistani teacher had a son, and he said when his daughter was born most people didn’t care but everyone from his family came over from Pakistan to meet his son. He’s in his 40s I think so maybe that’s changed and the second generation are more against it, but would be interesting to see how immigration affects the gender inequality perspective

I'm a brown girlie myself who grew up watching Lilly, but I stopped watching her in recent years (before the late night show was even released). It feels like this is the first time in a hot minute where I've seen her so genuine. I personally can't digest her content as easily anymore, but I can still respect her as a person for admitting the flaws and addressing her failures.

There was so much pressure because she was the only female POC in late night and people really love to generalize a group based on a representative and when she’s taking that place of a representative that’s a lot of weight on her shoulders so even if no one was saying anything negative, her race and gender still added this extra layer of difficulty.

It takes a lot of humility and strength to publicly admit failure. To fail in such a public way is already embarrassing, but to have the strength to acknowledge it publicly and talk about how the system needs to change is very admirable! I love how Lily is using her bad experience to start a conversation about the TV industry lack of diversity and lack of support for diverse projects. I'm impressed with the strength of character Lily has.
One thing I would like Lily to answer is if she knew that a lot of the stuff that was written for the show was bad and she saw the criticisms that people like. Drew gooden made, was she able to take his criticism for what it was or did she conflate it as one of the haters? Same with Eddie burback. I don't know about the other creators that made videos because honestly I either forgot about them or have never watched it. But those two made pretty good criticisms in good faith

Honestly, hearing Lily talk about the process of late night show production, her feelings and lack of knowledge on late night show makes me look at her show in a different light. She has a very strong personality and I commend her for trying out late show! Now that she knows and has a better understanding of late show, I hope she can take similar ventures knowing what she knows now!
I don't get one thing though. She says she shot 96 episodes in 3 months. Doesn't that make it like 1 episode a day? Why did they shoot like 3 a day? Shouldn't the shoot have ended in like a month?

dude, she grew up in Canada, not some small village in India in the 1800s. that whole 2nd daughter thing is almost non-existent in immigrant families that are raised in the west (coming from an American who grew up w/ a VERY similar cultural upbringing as her)
for the record, i thought some of her youtube skits/impersonations were actually decent. but her standup and late night show were absolutely horrendous, and constantly invoking the "barriers" (gender, culture, sexual orientation) repeatedly and claiming victim mentality got pathetic, EXTREMELY fast

As an Indian girl, Lilly CARRIED my early teenage years. This video was the first thing I’d seen of her after such a long time and turns out, I still love her so much. There’s just way too much hate and I’m happy she seems to have grown out of it
This comment section is very positive which is weird because usually when her name gets brought up it's to talk about how awful her content is. In the last several years I've never heard any positive things about her. Her name only ever appears next to the words cringe or unfunny. It's good to see positivity for her.

I like this side of Lilly. This Lilly is the one that needs a show. This Lilly was the reason why I subbed to her channel. The person on Late Night felt like someone who was desperate for validation. The person here is wise and is owning up to her mistakes and is growing. Love that.
As a brown woman myself, I always thought she represented me in some way. Whether you hate her or love her, you have to agree on the impact she has created. To this day, this woman works hard just to satisfy herself and I relate so much to that. No matter how many "failures" she goes through, I will never not appreciate this women. Thank you, Lilly.
So good to hear her side of the process in the aftermath of her show. At the time yeah it wasn't the best show but people really used it as a way to just insult and blame her over things she didn't fully have control over.

I’ve watched half so far and this has really put into perspective what happen with the late night show. I’m not savvy on how television works and this was eye opening for me on how difficult her path has been. Thank you for this. I feel so much better about the whole thing after hearing her story because I was confused. I had such a positive view of her before late night and I didn’t understand what had happened. It just didn’t seem like her.
It’s actually so insane to film 3 episodes a day and have to write in between that somehow so the fact it even aired is impressive. Like how could anyone be expected to produce good work like that? I never knew that and have so much respect for her knowing that now

this is such an interesting conversation considering Anthony's experience with badly written and received movies. Large production is really exciting but writers that pander to trends really fail the talent.
I've always really agreed with what Brittany Broski said about Lilly and her show, which is that it was set up to fail, and it's interesting to see Lilly acknowledge that. The late night scene was just not made for people like Lilly, which sucks, but at the same time, those types of shows are dying. The era of late night is pretty much over; the most views they get are here on RUclips with shorter clips. If the genre wants to survive, they have to adapt.
I'm really proud of her progress , she's grown into such a self aware , honest and lovely woman fr and I'm glad we finally got her perspective on the late night show . I can't even imagine how stressful and painful it must've been to create something of that sort, then get so much hate on that and her youtube channel as a result aswell. I'm glad she has a healthier work life balance now though :3 , and yeah getting an elderly relative of admit they are wrong WOW that is one heck of an achievement , I'm really proud of her
I was such a huge fan of Lilly growing up, but I grew out of the youtube skits and never really got into late night so I stopped watching her content. I actually loved her vlogs during the How to be a Bawse book tour. She has such a bright and uplifting personality, her jokes were genuinely funny and resonated with me as a bi brown girl and I cannot wait to see what she does next. She is a good creator before anything else and I'm proud of her.
I admire how she is able to admit she falied but that it led her to learning a lot of new things. It is not very common to see that online you usually only see succes stories or people pretending failure never ocurred.

This is the most honest interview I've seen in a while, I'll admit I wasn't a huge fan of the late night show but I just chalked it up to not knowing Lilly that much like most other late night hosts, all in all NBC really gave her and the people behind the scenes the short end of the stick when it came to making a first impression on TV and I hope everyone involved is doing better now.

I’ve always struggled with self esteem, and listening to her talk through and both own her shit AND realize she wasn’t set up for success at the same time, it just makes me reflect on my own life and feel better about my experiences and where I’m at now. I'm so happy to see what seems like a fairly genuine conversation from her side of things.
I vividly remember the moment I discovered her videos when I was 12 and I was OBSESSED with her. I remember thinking I was so cool because I had subscribed to her before she had even reached 100k subscribers lol. she was one of my top 10 favourite creators for quite a while, but as I got older, I kind of outgrew the target audience. I'm 24 now, and since I stopped watching her stuff a few years ago I have always silently cheered her on. I was bummed to see that her show hadn't been going well and that it didn't seem to be well recieved, because I did think she had the potential to make a decent show.
it's nice to hear her perspective about what that process was like, and I can't even imagine how hard it was for her to go through not only all the show stuff during covid, but all the backlash and hatred she got afterwards. I really do wish her the best and I think she has a really important voice and story to share.
Great to hear all this in Lilly's words. For a long time everyone's been shitting on her and her failed show, including me which I now regret, but people fail all the time. Hell, she probably did a better job than I could.

I think for a lot of people gender equality is something they hear about from someone else, but for others it's about their lives and trauma.
And when you're so determined that you can "prove" something, people's expectations will be really high.
The reality is that sometimes you can work 15 hours a day and do your best and still not get what you wanted, but it's healthier to think about it as a learning experience because something did come off it. A failure for me is if you are the same as when you started.
It’s like listening healed people talking about their journey and healing processes, truly inspirational, hope I’ll too get to that point
She used to be my role model for a long time and I had forgotten why I loved her so much when I was younger since her recent content didn't appeal to me but this interview warmed my heart and reminded me why in the first place I started looking up to her as a teen
Honestly I can see Lilly doing a RUclips video podcast where she brings in her guests like she did with her talk show. But it will be more chill and in control and she can keep showing the world her charm ans charisma

Honestly, I totally understand the greed for more in context of gender equality. As a girl, I always feel the need to compete with men… whether it be in projects, humor or simply fashion (it’s not healthy lol)
Lily is absolutely right, every project that attempts something new can inspire greatness. Most people only talk about the successful projects that inspire them, but just as important are the projects that failed and taught you something. Anyone who considers starting a new show like Late Night can learn a lot from what happened with Lily. They can ask questions, they can do research, they can say no if it feels too similar to what went wrong with Lily.

This is what people need to realize when it comes to show business. Lots of people online love to hate on a show. If it didn't meet their expectations (that are impossible to achieve sometimes) they say "oh, the writing is horrible" "the actor doesn't know how to act" but fail to see that there could have been a bigger issue from the start. Why did the WGA strike happen? Not only because people were not getting paid enough for their work, but productions were suffering from constraints like these. Less of a budget? Less time to make the show/movie.
I may not like her content, but at the very least I can respect what she has achieved and the self awareness she has, especially about the late night show

Honestly I think she needs to take more accountability for her part in the failure of her show tbh. Like it’s still like she’s blind to and doesn’t acknowledge what her role was and how that ended up impacting the show very negatively.
As a woman, hearing her talk about changing her grandfather’s mind, brought me to tears. Our cultures are very different, but being a woman in any culture is a struggle. Lilly is so badass and inspiring.
Any culture? Go visit the Middle East, India, China, and Africa and come back and tell me it’s hard to be a woman in the western world.

Women in other cultures outside of the western world, def experience another level of oppression, sexism, and prejudices. So, Lily, coming from a culture where women aren’t seen as equal in any sense, for her to still bust through those barriers, is so inspiring- not just for women in her culture, but women in all cultures bc we all face some type of oppression; different levels of oppression, but all some kind of oppression.

Countries like China and Russia have sizeable middle classes that can afford things westerners can afford, but that doesn't change the fact that those governments continue to abuse the rights of their citizens.
As a woman from one of the countries you mentioned, it is indeed hard to be a woman EVERYWHERE. Some countries have it harder but that shouldn’t be used to trivialize the type of problems women face in the western world.

I didn't like it too much but hey at least she tried & so did all the writers & crew. And she's still going ahead with life & admitting to fails & doing things she wants & likes.
Thank you for doing this. I grew up with her RUclips channel , and it was saddening to see her “downfall” because I always thought she was one of the very few RUclipsrs who were authentically themselves. Thank you.
I have incredible respect for Lilly. She was very influential to me when I was a teenager and started the process of me realizing not only that I was queer but that it was okay for me to be queer. She is someone who stands firmly on her values and morals and it's very inspirational to me. Thanks for having her on.

Used to watch Lilly a lot, haven’t watched much of her content in the last 7 years but I’m very proud of her for growing, learning, healing and talking about it. I remember her being legit one of the first big female poc on yt and I could relate to her videos about family and culture. Feels very nostalgic hearing her speak.
Listening to Lily describe how the show was made really puts my feelings and thoughts about the show into context. I didn't stay up late enough to watch, but I did catch stuff on RUclips after. I remember thinking the tone didn't feel right and it wasn't as fun as her RUclips presence had been. The behind the scenes look makes everything make so much more sense. I'm so glad she's settled that part of her career and has learned a lot from it. I can't wait to see what she does next. 😊

The fact that Lily did it - as in all that she has done, she is for sure successful and still killing it!
You know what's actually unfunny is how quickly the people who already weren't interested in her content came out of the shadows to criticize her late night show that they probably weren't interested in either. But as soon as they caught a whiff of "uh oh it's not going too well" they all came out to pile shit on her. I remember seeing commentaries from people and thinking "you don't even look like you knew or cared for her OR her content, why are you suddenly talking like she betrayed your entire existence?" Like people were being THAT dramatic with the hate. Like y'all don't even hate on WARS this viciously. Just ignoring, not giving the show the views & leaving comments like "meh. not good. Isn't working" etc etc would have been enough.
I hope while she avoided most videos about her that she saw Drew Gooden’s video on it. It says things I think deserved critique about the smug persona/putting others down vibe, but still shows so much respect and love for her. I hope she’s in a better place now. (Mentally, don’t mean to sound like she’s dead haha)
I hope as I watch this that at one point she does mention how smug she acted towards haters of her show, cause it made me grumpy at the time but then I quickly could tell she didn’t like doing it either. She really understands the hate, so I’d love to hear her talk about how her persona was written had to be in hardcore defense of her show that in her mind she didn’t stand with
Seeing all these youtubers from my childhood come out and be honest about their journey has been really helpful as I transition to similar problems in life. I mean, I'm not in the 'creator' life at all as a career scientist, but in many ways the struggle of being placed where you are unprepared and making the best of it...that is something I've encountered time after time. I havent seen anything from Singh in years but she seems incredibly genuine and smart in this interview. I hope to hear more about what she does.

Used to watch Lilly at least 4 or 5 years ago. Have to say it was pretty cool to just see two people have a healthy conversation about figuring themselves out
NBC set Lilly up to fail. A Little Late would still be on and successful if they gave her more time to find her footing
i watched lilly when she was just doing youtube, like the old videos before the fancy intro with the rainbow on. She was a role model for me honestly. Then i just grew up and just stopped watching her, way beforeeee the late night thing. But heard about the drama of course. but didnt even watched it, because no matter what, Lilly was a role model for me because of the person she showed in her videos and still clearly shows in this interview to be: honest, self aware, funny, kind, love spreading unicorn, so wise, spiritual, phylosophical, and just real.
So happy to see her in a good place mentally and taking care of herself.

I grew up watching her. I was adopted from India into a white family in Midwestern America. I did not grow up with diversity. Finding Lilly was such a blessing because it felt like I finally found a lifeline when I was perpetually drowning. When I was at the age when I watched her obsessively I really didn’t know where to even begin with connecting with my culture. She gave me to push to start watching Bollywood and listening to music. I can’t say I’ve made as much progress as I’d like but I am now 22 and exponentially more comfortable in my exploration of my own culture. I needed someone like her growing up. She was my superwoman. Despite her faults and how many people of the desi diaspora feel about her, I will always hold love for heart. I am so grateful for her. I hope to see more of her impact in media and the industry because she paved the way for me to be authentically me.

Good question! If you watch the rest of the interview, she specifies that their time constraints were so extreme, they had to prioritize speed over quality and publish things they knew were poor quality. More time equates to more quality, and they didn't have that.

@jauxro more excuses. Every host that starts from ground up is low budget and in a time crunch. It's about doing your homework, which she said she didn't do since she didn't even know what late night was, also taking constructive criticism. It's no doubt Lilly is a hard worker, but working harder is not always the best thing. Like the saying goes, work smarter, not harder, and she definitely wasn't smart. The reason people fell in love with her in the first place was because she was original and relatable. Her show didn't show any of that, and when people tried to tell her, she didn't listen. Her loss

As a person who has produced on Broadway and Lincoln Centre going straight from college, and learning some shit the HARD WAY, I can identify with the lessons learned. And, it also hit hard being the first doing Indian productions in a white world. I still kick myself for not knowing things, but I am proud of my work to bring awareness to abuse and domestic violence, and being the first before an Indian stage production on a Broadway stage. I did it! I learned! Bravo to her, great attitude. She's right about success, it's ALL ABOUT our prospective. And people who WON"T or NEVER WILL DO, will tear you a part.
lilly was THE representation for brown girlies on yt for YEARS. 9 yr old me was so grateful to finally see a girl like me talking abt typical brown scenarios. tho i rarely see her pop up on my feed now, i still have sm respect for her for making me laugh all these years and admitting to her flaws. i genuinely didnt even think her show was THAT bad til i saw people critiquing her dialogues and how bleak they were. im so proud of how far shes made and how she takes accountability for the show not being a hit instead of throwing the blame onto the people who went into the writing, producing, etc of it

I will always love Lilly Singh. I will always be grateful for her being there when I was growing into myself. She was the role model I needed at that point in my life. Hearing her talk about her failures & hardships is so surreal.

I loved this entire interview. I love seeing both of you so open and so honest to yourself and each other about the difficulties you're facing, the things that've happened and the realities you live in. I teared up when I heard what Lilly had to say about her family because damn that familial pressure really hits different if you're in that type of culture. I hope we all strive to be like both of you, confident, driven, and balanced.
She's not telling the truth. Her show didnt purely exist during the pandemic. She had a full failing season 1 in the can when the pandemic hit. She had about 16 months pre-pandemic. Season 2 was during it, but Season 1 did so bad, they were already debating about a Season 2.
This was such a lovely conversation. She seems so happy and her company sounds like it's doing so well. I also was stressed when she had her shoes on the couch.

As an indian. Gender inequality is not something that is every home or society in general(speaking from a middle class perspective ). It is more prevelant in economically suffering housholds/neighbourhoods. I am 18 so i have a better idea of the recent culture rather than the old culture. My mom used to tell me that girls weren't valued as much in her time but she was lucky to have parents who weren't like that but now this is generally not a problem. People have evolved very quick in the last decade. So what lily is saying is something that used to be a thing but is not anymore in most households.
I wonder if diaspora comes into effect, because my British-Indian friends comment on the gender inequality a lot. About five years ago my Pakistani teacher had a son, and he said when his daughter was born most people didn’t care but everyone from his family came over from Pakistan to meet his son. He’s in his 40s I think so maybe that’s changed and the second generation are more against it, but would be interesting to see how immigration affects the gender inequality perspective
