Mackenyu did had to audition to get the role, but when he was offered to audition he thought it wasn't for Zoro cause the scene asked wasn't in the manga, so the crew had to tell him it was for Zoro so he could sent his audition.
His audition was different I guess. He was already shortlisted from possibly a list of sword actors, since he acted in Rurouni Kenshin. Koby was also a proper actor in other shows.
It makes so much sense why they just gave Mackenyu the option to take it, he was their first choice. He looks the part and he has the sword skills so of course he’d be the one to go for.
Kiki got hugged by Oda, that is probably one of the rarest hug in the world, Oda is very introverted to borderlining into the spectrum, any fan would want that hug from him.
Spoiler* I didn't like him at first because of how different Shanks was drawn in the manga, but his facial structure, his kinda sleazy sad vibe would fit so well now that I believe guy is Figarland's blood related.
Jacob is so underrated. He is funny and charming. All I have to say is that the casting people better not screw up Robin. She has to be gorgeous, elegant and be able to have a bit of dark humor. And Chopper has to be the most adorable character ever cause thats who he is😊
The hardest part for Robin is being tall, lol! I doubt they'll find a woman 188cm, taller than Zoro and Sanji, and still look the part. Waiting for Season 2 to surprise me! And of course, everyone is most nervous about Chopper. The most difficult Straw Hat to pull off.
You gotta love the fearless, innocent naivete of Mugiwara no Luffy. In~aki does a wonderful job of capturing his spirit and bring it to life. Hope that they do as awesome of a job with season 2 as they did with the first.
I'm not the "movie" expert that some people are, but even I was blown away by the casting. I really think they made good decisions and I think the success of the first season owes a lot to good casting choices. I'm really glad to see this do well.
If I could audition for a character in One Piece live-action, for me it would be definitely Zoro. Just like Mackenyu, I grew up with anime. They did not want to disclose what the audition was for at first, then Mackenyu said he might consider if he would know what the audition was for,then the team decided to tell him it's for One Piece. He wanted to know further what character, then he was told it's for Zoro. Mackenyu said he did not hesitate and said, I'll do it! 😅 Oda specifically wanted a Japanese actor to play Zoro.Mackenyu fits the description, plus he speaks English fluently and has martial arts and Katana/sword skills.

We understand your concern in this matter. It is a big gamble to work with such young people, but if the environment is right and they have had a good formation of values, there is often nothing to worry about 🥰🥰

Not since LotR or Firefly have I witnessed a cast feel like a loving family/crew of close friends so much…They truly are “The Straw-hats.”
