I love all the Islay distilleries. Started with Laphroaig, always come back to their 10 year. I buy Laguvulin 16 when I can find it. Just bought my first bottle of Ardbeg as my local liquor shop owner (Jesse) knows me now and knows my tastes and he recommended the An Oa as an intro to Ardbeg. I love it as well, may need to buy another bottle as I got this one for Christmas and I'm sure it'll be empty after New Years Eve.
sorry about commenting on an old video; i like what you guys have going on. Scott brings the brains with his info and the laptop and Bart brings the fun and excitement of discovering new whiskey.
Interestingly I find myself being drawn in to seeking out PEATED SCOTCH WHISKY more and more...I have a living bottle that I started just a couple weeks ago. It contains six different scotch single malts (at present) in varying amounts of each. There are two aged malts (a 10 yr & 12 yr), and there are three regions at present that these six come from; Speyside, Highland, and Islay. This bottle will continue to morph slowly over time, but the one constant that it will continuously have in it's flavor profile is PEAT SMOKE........... Slainte!!!
You guys were on fire today with this review. I sat down with my own bottle of An Oa and cracked open a fresh Ardbeg 10 to play along. Scott nailed it with the smoked peanuts comment on the An Oa and Bart was spot on with the brine and earthy tones of the Ardbeg 10. I sipped along until the trolls went down for the count then I just mixed my two drams together and chilaxed for the rest of the review.
Stop being disappointed Ardbegians. They’re all great. Props for adding something easily accessible. Had this vs Dark Cove 46%, An Oa wins to me on nose and finish. Mid palate DC has the richness. All Ardbeg are better than most. Thanks for the review dummies! Been awaiting this one ever since I spotted the box on the back shelf.
i've read that if your nose can no longer pick up scents a good tactic is to smell the inside of your elbow pit ...smelling your own skin resets your nose. saw this on the whiskey vault and also on a food network with food taster pros being interviewed.
I'm always excited to see my favorite whisk(e)y reviewers post a video. I may not enjoy peated stuff (I can drink Highland Park 12), but I definitely enjoy when you two review a peated monstrosity. The Bottle of Wow probably makes the reviews better though :) Keep it up you scotch gods.
So glad y'all did this review. I've been on the fence about trying this one but sounds like it's worth a shot. Just out of curiosity, the notes y'all were saying about the An Oa almost kind of reminded me of the McCarthy's with the lighter peat and some sweet notes. That's what I get from the McCarthy's the first times I've poured it.
I have both of these - On the 1st part of the video: I agree on the comparison to Lagavulin & ash, but not on Peanuts or citrus. I also agreed with the whisker cupping :) Ardbeg 10 is much better imo - sweetness. My input would be that Ardbeg 10 tastes like a "cleaner" Laphroaig" On the 2nd part - totally agree, I can see why Ardbeg fans were disappointed in the AN OA
I am a peat head. I like the punch you in the face peats, but I do like this one for a little change of pace with still having the peat. Great review guys I love the comparisons at the end it brings a good perspective on the differences.
STD, It's actually pronounced "An Oh" I was not aware that some Ardbeg fans were not happy with this bottle. I personally love it. Such a well balance, sweet, smoky dram. I paid $65 at Total Wine. Its a solid 90 for me. I'm also on my 2nd bottle of Uigeadail. I still yet have to try the Ardbeg 10 yr. I've had a 50ml of the Corryvreckan, but I need to revisit it. Great review.
Ardbeg 10 quality has dropped off a since I first had it about 10 years ago. It instantly became my favorite and nothing I have tried since beats it. Now however it's a bit weaker but it's still very good. I think the Uigadeal is better.
I saw the Ardbeg tour bus on my way to work. Found out they were on its way to Binny’s. It’s the “Total Wine” kind of store in my area. Next thing I know I’m purchasing this bottle to get it engraved. Ardbeg 10 is better but this is still delicious enough for me to buy again.
“I can drink more of this, it’s delicious” - haha, exactly my though after second (!) dram of Ardbeg 10 this Sunday night. Tried it first time, picked up after this review, in a warehouse box as well. Had a bottle of Ugidail about a year ago, nice but too similar to other whiskies. Also have Laga 16 and Laphroaig 15 always around but longer maturation softens the peat and adds fruitiness and sweetness, even without sherry casks. Nice quality but sometimes when you are hungry you crave for something sweet, like dried apricots, and sometimes for something dry and salty, like beef jerky. Ardbeg 10 is that beef jerky for me. Very chewy and salty. Glad I picked it up. It is in a completely separate category from sweeter whiskies.
Good review gent's , always a good laugh on a saturday morning . I liked it but then I don't like being slapped in the face with peat. I like it but not when my head is slammed into a wet campfire pit or a medicinal mouthwash. You can guess by now I like it just not at 10 on a 1-10 scale. Cheers looking forward to the Sunday Live today. Cheers and I like the An Oa
Would love to know if this gets sickly on you? Did I miss Bart’s score? Same price as the 10? Crazy. Half the age, half the integrity, half the engagement. Only my opinion. Good idea pulling out the 10 as a control.
I got to try this once with my cousin ......who picked this up while we were on vacation. I remember it being good but not great. Awesome and fun review as usual:) Ever thought about a camera angle switch up? Maybe standing up reviews so I can see Bart’s Long Legs for days!!!!!:).
Scott -- you nailed a flavor I could not quite figure out with this one -- salty peanuts. I got sesame and even some soy sauce with this one and an indistinct sweetness. Anyway, it's Ardbeg for sure but, it's not my favorite Ardbeg,...by a long shot. It's like it's a watered down/dulled over version of Uigeadail. It's missing all the spices, fruit subtleties and richness. Uiggie and the plane ole 10yo are my favs, and far better, more precise expressions. Kelpie is really good too,....anyway.... Florence was the maid on the Jeffersons!
Scotch Test Dummies & Erik Wait- tonight (maybe earlier🤔🤷♂️)- have 100% convinced me, as a Uigeadial super fan & recently introduced to Ardbeg 10, that I absolutely need to/must try the An Oa! Who knows... solely based on the price... my brother & I MIGHT get the An Oa, next- then the Corryvreckan???? I have a massive sweetooth
Don’t you guys get loads of pepper on the An Oa ? It’s the first thing that struck me, white pepper and strong Aniseed kind of masks the peat. It seems way different than an Ardbeg 10 or the Laphroig 10, it is more like a Bunnahabhain complex, sweet and not much peat. hey that rhymed !
I get what you say about the earthiness of the Ardbeg 10. I would say that the Laphroaig 10 is more on the marine side for me. I don't know I like when they go on the sweeter side. I haven't tried any of the of the other Ardbegs yet.
I enjoyed the An Oa. I think what disappoints many is that this is a pretty standard expression to be joining the permanent range. The other thing that irks is that it is a 46% NAS and retails for roughly the same as the ever popular 10 year old. If it had been released by anybody else we would no doubt be saying what a lovely dram it is. Ardbeg don't help themselves by issuing quality annual releases for twice the price they should be. We were all waiting for something like the Kelpie or Dark Cove for the same price as the An Oa.
All in the Family was definitely one of the best TV sitcoms America could genuinely laugh at itself, and hit on social/cultural issues we faced. Sadly, we have moved into "reality tv" idiocy. Two spin-offs from All in the Family, were "The Jeffersons" and "Maud" (starring Bea Arthur). Oh yeah, good review guys. ^_^ Bart was trolling Scott a bit too much in this review.
They certainly turned out to be hits. Sadly, we will never see the likes of these shows, or a show like M*A*S*H. But enough about that...I am certainly looking forward to your peat mud review. I am not much of a peat-head, I am more of a sherry-butt. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to what you two have to say.
Great review you dummies! I like to have a variety of scotch flavors. Not every time I want a dram do I always want the same nose/flavor scotch and this one sounds like a good tweener.
Scott, please show this one to Bart. I don't think you're going to like my comment as much as Bart will. Remember that "throat punch" episode that you mentioned? Bart when I was watching that the whole time I was saying "Bart's right." Bart you were correct the entire time during that episode. Sorry Scott, but my personality matches Bart and I'm not kidding. Bart was right...
I thought whisky reviewers on RUclips of all places would NOT be a fan of trolls... Go Figure😄. Anyway, Awesome Review as Always, and I will just have to treasure my "Scotch it you scotch Gods!" T-shirt, as well as my "12 Hours of Boom" T-Shirt as apparently they will both be exclusive collectibles one day... As for the actual An Oa whisky, I feel like it is Wood forward. I keep wanting to call it Ardbeg Quarter Cask. Do you find this scotch particularly woody? It would sure explain why Bart does not care for it so much.
Interesting...I'll have to go back and see if I find the wood to strong...that would explain a lot. bart...hold onto those exclusives Duncan...it could make you a dummy fortune one day...
Great review, thanks. I like the traditional Ardbegs, but I liked An oa very much. It is sweet, Smokey and easy to drink for a low price. I do detect a cardboard note (youngness) if you leave it too long in the glass... An oa is to Ardbeg want Magnus is to HP, but this one works!
I wonder why Ardbeg made this gift box that encourages improper storing of the malt. 🤔 On another note, it sounds like the An Oa doesn't really offer anything to the Ardbeg and peat enthusiast over the flagship Ardbeg 10 and it costs more. Also sounds like it might actually be younger.
the tin i'm sure was made for the collector and not to store the bottle in, fact is there are two different tins now available. The An Oa is still a good whisky just sweeter and not as peaty as the 10, probably just for something different.
You are making me nervous! I have a half full bottle of An Oa that is my first Ardbeg. I absolutely love it and have been researching my next Ardbeg purchase, I think I want to try Corryvrecken next before Uigeadail, but if they're that different from An Oa, maybe that's not such a good idea? (BTW, Ardbeg says on the bottle and website that it's pronounced 'Oog-a-dal,' which I read to mean like in dalmatian or Dalmore, not dale/dail...)
my attidude towards peat is similar to Scott's. it took me some years to aquire a taste for it and i still don't like that punch in the face , so Ardbeg is my favorite Islay distillery
I didn't love An Oa, but I didn't hate it. I honestly believe that a bit more aging could have done wonders for it. A little more time in the marrying vat would make a big difference IMHO.
Spent some more time with An Oa. I honestly don't get the point of this one for Ardbeg -- it's clearly not as good as their other three standard expressions. Does not distinguish itself,...in a positive way that is.
A good review of the Ardbeg An Oa. I like it but being a Peat Head, my favorites of the regular line are still the 10 and Uigeadail. The introduction of the An Oa reminds me of when Laphroaig introduced the Select version to try and broaden its customer base with a less peatier version. The Select experiment does not seem to have worked out too well for Laphroaig since most people have generally panned it. For me, the Select is not terrible but I do think that Laphroaig tried to add too many things to that version and they ended up with something that has nothing to differentiate it. I do like the An Oa much better than the Select. On a more trivial note, did you notice that the An Oa bottle is slightly shorter and slighty rounder than the 10 and other Ardbeg bottles ? When I bought my bottle of An Oa in December and put it on my shelf next to my other Ardbeg bottles, I instantly noticed the small difference. Finally, count me in for a couple of STD trolls named Peat if you ever decide to market them ~ Lol !
I would like to suggest that we put our heads together and find a way to influence Chad and Sara so they end up giving Scotch a fair shake. From what I've seen, so far all we get are screwed up facial expressions and words like "smells like garbage" and stuff like that from them. Apparently, they hate Scotch. So, I can't be sending bottles to them... I thought about it but then realized it would be much more fun to send more bottles to you guys. You'd appreciate them at least... But... maybe we have people in the audience who would agree to send bottles of pleasant beginner Single Malt Scotch to Chad and Sara for them to test. So I'm thinking even if they go around saying they don't like Scotch, if they get enough bottles of Scotch they will definitely crack them open and try them. I have another idea. I think they should give up all booze for a week (everyone needs to do that occasionally) and then the first thing they pour (and add a teaspoon of water) is a Single Malt Scotch. I'm telling you... if they haven't had any Bourbon for a week I'd bet they could appreciate Scotch. Ask Bart. Maybe Bart will agree with me. Cheers!
@@ScotchTestDummies I Just revisited An Oa. Nose is interesting enough and it still develops quite a bit in the glass and I mostly get a lingering smoky finish that has it's own logic to it, but somehow on the whole it just feels a little less mature and developed, a little less balanced and a little more harsh in it's contrasts. Still a good product but you can find most of it's elements in it's brothers in a richer context I think ...
Ardbeg An Oa, like Laphroaig Select was a one and done for me, an entry level young'un created to eventually push the 10yo up the scale, IMHO. Nothing terrible about either one but like Bart says, I'd rather be punched in the face by peat.
I love all the Islay distilleries. Started with Laphroaig, always come back to their 10 year. I buy Laguvulin 16 when I can find it. The An Oa was the first and so-far only Ardbeg I've tried and it's my favourite whisky since then.
it is a good one. thanks for watching derhenri2002!
Give the rest a try. I would say that An Oa is a brilliant introduction to Ardbeg
Absolutely LOVE this expression by Ardbeg. The bourbon and sherry cask influence on this smoky malt is utterly fantastic......

Try the 10. It’s in your face peat, but I found myself loving it and it’s reasonably priced.

I saw this one on the shelf down in Seattle last October, but I could only bring one bottle home... I have not seen it in stores near me... Yet!
worth picking up Quig!
If I'm not broke when I see it, it might happen...
Would love to know if this gets sickly on you? Did I miss Bart’s score?

Did you taste any of the PX in this?? It sounds like Oogie is still king for Ardbeg under $100.
Oogie is king for Bart...under $100

Thanks
some may definitely pick up an iodine note and/or a medicinal one!

Is it alright to leave the bottle lying down on its side with that special ardbeg warehouse box? Edit: nvm continued watching the rest of the video
haha! take the bottle out and stand it up!
I was mostly just a bourbon or canadian whiskey drinker until I tasted Ardbeg 10 and fell in love
boom!
That ARDBEG box ROCKS!
that is cool!
I was very curious about that one. I think I would go for it if it’s the same price or not much more than the 10.

I think this is the friendliest Ardbeg i ever tasted. Like it a lot.
Scott agrees!
I don’t remember any pepper but I could have missed it. Great rhyme. Bart
Fantastic video guys. A topic close to my heart ♡

Been on a big beer/bourbon kick lately. Gotta start drinking my scotch again! Will have to try to grab a bottle of this.
great intro into a sweeter peaty scotch. thanks Ronald!

We don’t disagree
would love to see this compared against the 10, corry and ugi.
that would be good.
Bart, you mentioned black cherry soda. You remember a white grape soda named Pomac? Sold mostly in the South.Looked like a light beer. 🍺
I don't think I ever tried that...want it now
As a kid you thought you looked cool ‘cause it looked like you were drinking a beer.
In our town in Las Vegas Ardbeg 10 is $59.99 and the an oa'i is 6999
a little higher for both, normally $50 for the 10 and not for sure on the An Oa anymore.
once again very amusing!!

Jeez I love Bart.Around 11 minutes he hits life in 2018 ON THE HEAD. Heaven help us. Scott speak up!
scott agrees!
Its An Oh ... you don't speak the A in Oa ... I know because I walked on the Oa. Which is an area on Islay with cliffs and shit. and Peat.
Cliff's and Shit...yet another RUclips channel idea...
An OA makes me dream aliens are abducting me….. anyone else?
Little green men or the mean ones with metal teeth.
Bart, U have the Look!
he loves it.
Ohhh Dan...
If you guys love these people Pete and Cheri so much, why are they never on the show?
We may have to try that...Bart could be Pete and Scott could be Cheri...Hmm I like the sound of this.
Oh it's a very good thing. The bottle order you have planned is perfect...maybe pick up the regular 10 year just for a taste of more smoke.
my attidude towards peat is similar to Scott's. it took me some years to aquire a taste for it and i still don't like that punch in the face , so Ardbeg is my favorite Islay distillery
amazing how your palate develops
I didn't love An Oa, but I didn't hate it. I honestly believe that a bit more aging could have done wonders for it. A little more time in the marrying vat would make a big difference IMHO.
nothing wrong with that observation! thanks whisky watch!
First peater just trying it tonight and I’m pleasantly surprised! Coming from a bourbon junkie
Very cool Nolen. Which peat did you try?
Spent some more time with An Oa. I honestly don't get the point of this one for Ardbeg -- it's clearly not as good as their other three standard expressions. Does not distinguish itself,...in a positive way that is.
Scott thinks it does, but he likes the sweet with the peat.
Great review, i knew her too 🤔🤔😂😂
muwahahahaha
Bart likes the way you talk Duane.
I enjoy doing the direct comparisons myself, epsecially similar styles (Single Barrel, Barrel Proof, Single Barrel Rye, etc). Always entertaining.
it really helps highlight the differences that you don't get when you just have them separate.
I just realized you guys are the "STD guys" lol good thing you've got some alcohol handy most times :D
unintentional but we decided to run with it!
Great malt
I really liked it too. Scott
A 90 rating for $60?! I would think that would always be a yes to the question “is it worth it?” What’s the lowest rating you can remember?
One of us gave and Irish Peat a 10 out of 100
@@ScotchTestDummies JUST watched your Connemara video!
Cheers!
we've sent them a few samples and i know another follower sent them some samples too. Last time i checked with them, they're still not digging it.
I brushed your whiskers twice and did not find it pleasurable...... lmfao! Way to smell those fingers like a boss!
Boom
Will buy it Captains.. I hesitated because ARDBEG 10 is the god here.. WIll buy this one...
The 10 beats this one in Bart opinion
The ten is far superior after all ...
good call
Thanks Jimidrammer! Great comment!
Oogie is sweeter than An Oa. And much much better
We would agree...check out our 16 blind bottle shootouts
Tttttteeeeesssstttttteeeeeeddddd!!!!
I have that lovely tin :)
The Tin is very nice
Bart just scratched his dogs butt with that hand.
thats the least of his worries!
The seventies sucked. Nixon, smog emission cars, No money, few channels on TV, etc etc. Much preferred the change over to the 80s and 90s.
Cool. The Dummies love the future
I know A Noah, but he don't like Ardbeg 10
lol
It’s pronounced Ahh know.. lol
We enjoy our pronunciationses
Hey Guys:
I think the Scottish use the word Dunnage? warehouse.
Mike
I believe you are correct...I like the sound of both words. Very unique. Rickhouse/Dunnage
Absolutely, Both words give me the impression of something which is Well Aged, which is the impression distillers want to make.
SLÁINTE
Mike
Yes
👍
If you really want to upset ardbeg fans, find and review a bottle of the unpeated ardbeg blasda.
HMMMM...bart is very curious now
You shouldn’t store your bottles on their side. The alcohol will kill the cork. Be careful.
Sorry. Should have kept watching. You got it.
great point though JC!
Peat hands lol 😂
