The Forgotten Legend Who Sacrificed His Legacy To Save His Country

  • Because for many newer or more casual football fans, it’s actually a common misconception that that Maradona was the one who first brought the title of world champions to his country. But the truth is, that there was in fact another who did it 8 years before - the original hero for his nation and singlehandedly carried his country to the top. A man who, if not for his prolific goalscoring, would have given the the Netherlands their very first world cup title.
And this forgotten Argentinian legend was named no other than Mario Kempes - the only Argentine in the history of the World Cups to be the champion, the top scorer, and the best player in the same World Cup. Something not even Maradona or Messi were able to pull off.

Because during his prime he didnt win major title with Valencia despite scoring hundreds of goal for the club. He only won 1 league title throughout his career which is during his short time at River plate. His lack of title has nothing to do with his ability, but it affected his legacy in long term.
Batistuta didnt win alot of major trophy at club level either but he remains popular because serie A was very competitive at the time and hugely popular worldwide. Kempes on other hand, only played in La liga and Primera division almost his entire career.
He's definetely among top 5 best players during the 70s. He was top scorer for four consecutive seasons between 1974-1978, winning golden boots twice in Primera division ,twice in La liga and then at the World cup.

Kempes was a great player, and like Maradona, he and Pasarella were the architechts of the first WC for Argentina. Unfortunately, this achievement is stained because of the increasing evidence that the Military Junta that ruled the country under a ruthless dictarorship interfered in the semifinal match between Argentina and Peru by bribing the Peruvian team in order to let the Argentinians win the match with a score difference over four goals (the game ended 6-0). Some months later, the Military Junta would have sent shipments of wheat to the Peruvian government.

And yet, most peoples didn't realize that the reason Argentina's current golden team was none other than Bernd Leno. In June 2020, when Arsenal lost to Brighton in Premier League game, Leno was brutally injured and Mikel Arteta decided to start Emiliano Martinez as a main goalkeeper for the remainder of 19/20 season, in which the club won the FA Cup and qualified for the Europa League, despite finishing 8th. Also, Aston Villa stayed up after the controversial game against Sheffield United, in which the opposition had a goal mistakenly disallowed (ghost goal), and this enabled Birmingham side to sign Martinez. With Aston Villa, he made some crucial saves that prolonged club's survival in Premier League, which enabled Lionel Scaloni to call him as a primary goalkeeper for Argentina that helped the country won the Copa America in 2021 and World Cup in 2022. This is simply the Butterfly Effect for football.

    "Kempes is forgotten"
Nah man, anybody who forgets or ignores Kempes is just ignorant about football. For sure Argentines will remember him even better, the 1978 World Cup team was one of their most spectacular and it's left positive memories in that country. Scoring 2 goals in a World Cup final is no mean feat, and he didn't need penalties to do it!

    Mario Kempes, I assume?
After Maradona, Passarella, and Messi, I hope the Argentines mention Kempes, even if Batigol seems like a more popular figure for his incredible goal/game ratio for both club & country.

There's a family called Kempe in Sweden, they don't actually play football but ice hockey. They named their elder son Mario in honor of "El Matador". Didn't turn that well, although he had a professional career, he couldn't establish himself in the NHL. His little brother however, Adrian Kempe, has become a freaking scoring machine for the Los Angeles Kings. I always found it funny to see a "Kempe" scoring goals and more goals on the ice, only today did I notice that the Swedish Kempes actually knew and cared about the Argentinian Kempes.

Maradona was only 1, not 19, when the 1978 WC took place and considered too young, although led them to the U20 national title. I remember watching him in the 1982 WC and was young, brilliant, yet volatile.

Everbody praise maradona, but for me, it was him and messi only. Maradona was a guy who was same for to his hunger and aggression and hand goal debate which resulted in worldcup. I don't think he would gain this much hype, if he didn't had the cup.
He look exact similar like growth, life and personality of ronaldo..
The the thing i appreciate about maradona is that, he give messi a idea about being a dribbler who also can bravely fight off opponent tackles✨🔥
