Of all the historically great footballing nations - no other has managed to reach the World Cup final as many times as the Netherlands, and still fail to have ever won the World Cup. As a country that's tied for producing the most Ballon d'Or calibre players - they've fallen just a bit short of winning the coveted trophy. Let's look at a brief history of their tragic shortcomings and see if they have what it really takes to win it in the World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

BS, Cruijff was a great player but Rinus Michels invented total football. Cruijf might have brought it to Barcelona as a manager, that only allowed Michel's proper successor Van Gaal to work undisturbed at Ajax and win the Champions League with a club that was financially tiny, beating clubs with something like 10 times the spending power.

As a Dutchman I still feel the struggle the Netherlands had in 2010 when they reached the finals only to lose to Spain. I was only 12 years old than. Many people in the netherlands still believe that the goal iniesta scored was offside. Even though I'm not sure about it myself. Still. I hope our country will one the world cup at least once. 1978's final was the closest one, Rob Rensenbrik almost equalised when latched onto to a headed pass from René van de Kerkhof, but the shot was kept out by the boot of Ubaldo Fillol (Argentina's Goalkeeper). After Nanninga's goal, they almost won the game in the final minutes, when Rensenbrink latched onto a long ball poking a shot past Fillol due to a bad play, but the shot bounced off the post, and the match went to extra time. Then it came Kempes magic goal (The ball bounces on Jongbloed) and at that moment the Dutch were discouraged, Bertoni's goal a few minutes later is proof of this.
At one point Neeskens hit a long pass that Galvan and Passarella couldn't clear properly and the ball landed in front of Johnny Rep who was quick to kick, but Fillol made the save of the tournament, jumping almost instantly to block what was the Netherlands goal.

Van Nistelrooy is always the player that would have scored goals from chances he wasn't part of creating. It's not allowed to field 12 players, simple as that. Ferguson tried to make it work, with Scholes, Ronaldo and Giggs creating chances for him it didn't work, so he added Saha to do the centre forward's work so Van Nistelrooij could poach leaving the team unbalanced. So he had to go.
Van Nistelrooij had is good years, but became far too selfish. In the Dutch national team he was always pretty poor, high maintenance, low return, mentally weak, not a team player.

The match itself looked lke a war, and had the most cards in a WC match. And after we won, Messi told a Weghorst who had annoyed him all thoughout the match "andá' pa' allá bobo" (Go away dummy), which has already become an iconic phrase.

Johan's family was victim of attempted kidnapping during the end of 1977.
Due to this scenario he did not want to leave his family behind and decided to stay in Barcelona during the 1978 World Cup which was a heartbreaking decision for him.

Him, his wife and children were captured, tied up and held at gunpoint and that made him rethink.

Do you know the story why Cruyff retired after playing just one world cup? It's because he was threatened at gun point in Barcelona and wanted to lay low so nothing would happen again. At that time it was relatively common for succesful soccer players to be harrassed at gun point or kidnapped or something, in Spain.
