I always think of it as a matter of first impressions. Who did you want as your representatives trying to convince far flung disconnected humans to join your galactic empire? The quasi-battle automata that are the Astartes or the ruthlessly savage and unreliably “human” Thunder Warriors?
@@chuck2703He did. And that hurts for some reason. They gave all to him. He could have simply retired them to a deathworld where they could fight till they passed, instead of betraying and murdering them.

As has been stated in other comments, it’s really cool to get a glimpse into the Unification Wars and the lives of the Thunder Warriors. The writing really drives home the stark differences between the Thunder Warriors and the Astartes to come, and also highlights (in my headcanon) how desperate the Emperor was to get his Plan on the move by making such impressive though roughshod creations. The Thunder Warriors depicted here simultaneously make me understand why the Emperor decided to purge them from history, but also elicit a feeling of admiration for their brutal simplicity of design and even sympathy at how as superhuman as they were, they still struggled far more then the future Astartes having to resist their flawed natures and (by comparison to the Astartes) imperfect design as noted by the description of their struggle to breathe the chemical laden air of battle and lack of a second heart . As another comment noted, I really got a bit of that Mad Max “War-Boy” vibe for the Thunder Warriors; We Are Half-Life. Eagerly awaiting part 2.

this is honestly the first time i heard a group of Marines talk. some how despite them being enhance humans i never thought their conversations would flow naturally, i always figured they would be gruff and straight to the point without wasting breath. also idk what it is but hearing about a character lose their mental faculties just make me sad, nothing is scarier than becoming just a fraction of your former self. last thing i promise, heard a bonk sound at 21:09
I like how much more vulgar and human like the thunder warriors are in this, the way they talk to each other and how they have their own personalities despite their insanity.
Damn, great job getting across how hectic it must of been for a Thunder Warrior Sergeant having to focus on advancing on the enemy while also watching and evaluating just how close to exploding his troops are! Plus, awesome how they slung “Yo Momma” jokes at each other 😂

The Thunderwarriors were undeniably much more human than space marines. Maybe that bit was why the emperor had them executed.
