Dear Lord THANK YOU! Finally a video that clearly states each step with no yammering on and on and clear visual examples. Looked FOREVER for a video like this! Awesome!
I remember the first time I painted a car.. It was my pride n Joy Mustang Cobra.. I bought it cheap cuz it needed a paint job.. I drove it for a year and then decided to do it myself.. I was nervous as hell, but, It turned out to be simpler than I thought.. Watch the videos and read the books. "The only thing you have to fear, is fear itself" .. I practiced on an old sheet of plywood first.. I took my time cuz, "The Devil is in the details" .. It came out great.. 5 years later, I sold it for a lot more than I paid for it.. Painting is actually fun and rewarding.. I like it, So, I painted my girlfreind's car, both girlfriends.. I went on to painting racing stripes on my car, Flames on my Father's car, my Mother's kitchen chairs and then everything else. LOL..
I have had my 1991 chevy Silverado since it was new. I decided to get it all 100 percent for driving, dress it up.and pain it. I have no experience. Where should ai start for good advice? Tks
Nicely done video; didn't waste my time with jittery footage or redundant talking. Lots of good info, too. A couple of small suggestions: Leave some of the written stuff on a little longer (I had to use pause a couple of times), and I wanted to know what grit wet paper you used after the clear coat. Final job looked great!
hey man cool video. iv been hesitant about painting my car by myself. been getting pointers at work and on you tube but finally found the style i wanna paint. every paint shop i went to get an estimate they where going to mix the clear coat in with the paint. i dont like that process. i like the way you show how to paint. first a primer then 2 base coats and then the clear coats. awesome job man
I feather my paint back with a DA sander never tried a grinder like that you did a great job. Seen a lot of vehicles from that year were the paint wants to flake off like that must be the primer or something they used back then.
I have a little 'rock ding' damage on the leading edge of my hood on my 06' Mustang. I think I'll try this 'home repair'..instead, you wouldn't imagine the cost estimates I've gotten! I don't want to spend $900.00 on a ten year old car w/ 150K miles..I'll try it myself first... Thanks for this video...just what I needed...
those paint fumes are gonna catch up with you if you are using a dust mask instead of a good paint mask with filter cartridges. Just concerned with your health.
UniqueDesigns41 Yes. You need the best quality respirator...even under the best conditions. Today's modern paints are deadly toxic. Furthermore, they contain chemicals that can "sensitize" your lungs. The first time you're exposed, you may show no ill effects...but the second or third time, you may experience an allergic reaction that could kill you. Safety is a must. These chemicals are usually labelled "for professional use only" because training and common sense is required to use them properly and safely. Don't put your health at risk for a paint job. Also...always always always wear safety glasses too!!!
I studied bodywork, from a master his name is DR DEAN CLOVES,he said after 19 years of on the line body and fender work, your lungs should be the same as the day you started, wear your protective gear,no matter what, its only a job, even if you get to play
Great video I want to ask what's the flash time for primer if you spray more than one coat and what's the sanding paper used for sand primer Also how long to wait before base coat and what's flash time between base coats it's laquer acrylic And how long do you wait to spray clear for the base coat? And what's flash time for this to spray more than one coat Sorry for too many questions but Iam in the process
I have always wanted to spray a small area of my car...after watching your video you made it look very easy....nice video. Thank you..one quick question ..do you have to do a wet sanding after spraying and then waxing ? Thank you for this amazing video
This was a great video showing the basicsof prepping and actually spraying paint on your car. Nice work and can't complain with solid results! I have liked this video so I can use it for future referance :) I think I noticed some word errors but I understood everything better than other videos! Thanks for the effort!
beautiful job! you made it look so easy....I just did an entire car paint job (my first time took me a couple of weeks) and I used very little hardener on my filler cause it hardens so fast in few minutes... the color of mixture on my filler was greyish light flesh.... I made sure it cured before sanding and paint but I wonder if it's gonna hunt me later.... the car looks straight and glossy now I just wonder if there's gonna be some shrinkage on the filler later on? (in a few months since I did not use enough hardener)
Thanks a lot, great video, I learn a lot. I like the way you do your videos, they made me keep my eyes on the screen all the time. Thank you very much.
Great video! Thank you for sharing. I have been trying to figure this out, so I can paint my truck. I would rather learn how to do it myself, then pay someone.
Your video makes it look so easy and I know it's not. I'm trying to gather the courage to paint my husbands car that he's restoring. I paint for a living but not on this scale. I only prime, paint and CC small panels that go into aircrafts. Any tips on pressure, paints and guns for something of this magnitude?
hey gonna try this paint thing out, have a dakota ,roof done burnt out,the sun killed the clear coat, so now i want to spray ,so can i prep the metal just by sanding then paint, onto clear ? Or do I need a primer, then paint...clear... ?
Great video, one of the better ones out there as has already been mentioned. Just a quick question, is it not necessary to primer the area where u have rubbed down with a scuff pad prior to adding base coat??? Thanks!!
Thanks for your input....And your right, you should always blend metallics and pearls I'm just tryin to give everyone the basics as a starting point and with a scenario they are probably in if they are painting their first panel/car... without going into the issues that can cause problems.
That turned out really good! Two question though, is scuffing the paint good enough to get the primer to stick well or would it peel later on? Would it be better to sand the paint, scruff it and then primer? My bad if these are dumb questions, I'm just starting to learn.
i know you probably get this, but i have done some bodywork and all i can say is: what i have found was the fastest way to strip a localised spot would be a paint stripper wheel on your grinder. I had to replace a lightly rust pitted section, because i cut to deep. :/ what a day that was.
Can I use these steps to close off the hole on the roof of my car after removing the stupid shark fin antenna? it's an xm/fm style antenna that they had to cut a small square to run wires. I want to paint the roof black afterwards. I really like the black roof on a silver car so i wanna do it but my car had a shark fin installed at the factory.
Great video! Truck looks even better! Maybe you could give us a little more details on products and sand paper numbers? And whatever else you used? It would be even better then! Thanks for the lesson though! BIG D
Great job man! on the truck and on the video! I for one know how much time and thought it takes to capture the video and then even more to edit it later. Great job!
Hey mike. Great job and thanks for sharing!! Wondering what grade sand paper you used to sand down the filler. And what grade when wet sanding over it. And finall the grade wet sanding over orange peel before the polish. Thanks in advance
I like the results man (: I'm wanting to do this to my 93 1/2 ton chevy too as we'll can you get the same results using spray cans primer and paint and gloss?
Not true a lot of people use spray cans and come out with results just as good ..same thing but not a gun .. There's plenty of videoed you can watch online telling you how to paint your car with spray cans
Yeah not sure if I might've seen the videos but I was looking at doing it to a hood, mirrors, and tailgate of mine....but I'll look into it and try it out myself
I'm a diy guy with some successes painting. Some suggestions: Detergent wash and then clean with a prep solution BEFORE anything else (to remove any hint of silicone from prior waxings). Next do the bodywork pre-paint sanding as shown on this video. Use less hardener in the Bondo if it's a warm day or it will set up too quickly. Sand the repaired area as shown: work down from 100 grit on putty to a 220 grit and use the glazing putty for fill any Bondo pinholes, small paint chips or scratch marks. You can use the spray cans for color if the area is small and blend into surrounding paint but you'll have better luck having the auto parts store mix you a half-pint to match the car's paint code and painting the whole panel as shown here. Proper solvents for air temp and thinning are important, too; get the sellers advice here. For clear, I've had poor luck with the spray cans and much prefer to spray the clear with a gun. Surprisingly, I've had good luck using a Harbor Freight $18.00 cup spray gun (which I also use a lot to lacquer furniture and cabinets). Use the author's technique for spraying (i.e. triggering at end of start and just before beginning each pass). Practice a little on s scrap of steel first. Have fun. Be patient.
Roy Nash I forgot to mention the primer: You can use the spray cans for this. I prefer to buy the kind recommended for sanding after application. I prime the entire area to be painted and wet sand the primer down to 600 grit. You can re-prime a couple of times to eliminate ANY visible scratches.
Good video. It looked like you "scuffed" the surrounding clearcoat/paint with a scotch pad. I take it that you don't have to buff down to primer to lay down the new paint. In other words, the two base coats will "cling" to a well scuffed existing clearcoat. Is this correct?
Kathryn Meyer no I've never bought any of my guns from eBay, just shopped them. I got my Iwatas from a local paint store, my Tekna from the Snap-On tool truck and my Matco brand gun from the Matco tool truck.
How did you manage to find a white that matches so well? I need to do my roof and my truck is also white. I bought some white paint and sprayed inside the bed to test the color and it was very different.
Great vid Mike, first off what is the name of the group or song or jam session for the music you have on there? Secondly,I have an airbrush gun with a max 2 inch spray pattern. Can I use this type of tool or do I really need to get a gun like you have? I am not doing this as a full time job, just to do kind of what you did on the video. Thanks bud.
I left all that information out for a reason. Different brands require different pressure at the tip and some different tip sizes. Some require different preparation for the surfaces(that's why I didn't include sanding grits). Ask your local paint supplier for their recommendation on paints/primers/clears. It's been so long I can't remember which brand I was using at the time.Bottom line...use this video and the instructions that come with your products and you'll do a fine job.
Dear Lord THANK YOU! Finally a video that clearly states each step with no yammering on and on and clear visual examples. Looked FOREVER for a video like this! Awesome!
Great video, all the steps, no rattling on with things I either don't need to know or already do... great stuff!
Thanks for the comment man, that's exactly what I was going for.....I hate vids that waste my time:)
Pro Scott So after all the painting, wet sanding and polishing, is there any chemical liquid you have to put on it? Or is that it?
I have been looking for a video like this. Just tell me what I need to know, and I will upvote and say "Thank you!".
So true nice vid man...

My first experience painting a car was in below zero temp with aerosol spray cans, I was 15 years old it was a joke
wow, that's... a lot of work. kudos to you for having the patience... lol. might have to rethink my idea of painting my own car.
came out fine. simple no fuss method. great job mate !
Thanks for making and uploading. Very informative. I might try some painting myself, but on an old dented panel first!
Great video. Gives me a lot of confidence to start my 99 cavalier! Thank u.
Lmmfao.....I just bought a 99 Cavalier that needs some cosmetic work!! How is urs coming along?
Nicely done video; didn't waste my time with jittery footage or redundant talking. Lots of good info, too. If you have an exhaust fan do you need to worry too much about the fancy respirator?
UniqueDesigns41 Yes. You need the best quality respirator...even under the best conditions. Today's modern paints are deadly toxic. This is Great! Good tips to go by, considering I'm learning how to become an apprentice spray painter.
I have always wanted to spray a small area of my car...after watching your video you made it look very easy....nice video. Thank you..one quick question ..do you have to do a wet sanding after spraying and then waxing ? Thank you for this amazing video

That was pretty freaking awesome man. Thanks for s simple, well thought out video :)
look easy ,,good job
Great Vid man!, quick question.. how long did it take to dry and no baking? pretty new at this
Looks good going to be doing my blazer soon?
Nice job!
cool vid you made it look easy
Nice video man! Straight to the point and really nice instructions. Where could I possibly buy or rent this type of spray gun?
you pretty much can't rent a paint gun, at least where I live you can't, but you can get a decent gun on eBay for around $150
+Abdul Mohammed any hardware or paint store. harbor freight, sherwin william, and any place that sell compressor, tools.
+Joel “Spiker69” Bargas I was thinking the same thing lol. Thanks for the heads up. Did you end up getting one off ebay?
Kathryn Meyer no I've never bought any of my guns from eBay, just shopped them. I got my Iwatas from a local paint store, my Tekna from the Snap-On tool truck and my Matco brand gun from the Matco tool truck.
+arshi khur the silver HF $49.00 gun is fine for diyers at home
How did you manage to find a white that matches so well? I need to do my roof and my truck is also white. I bought some white paint and sprayed inside the bed to test the color and it was very different.
a auto paint shop can test and get a perfect match for you based off your car
Great vid Mike, first off what is the name of the group or song or jam session for the music you have on there? looks good man
really nice job bro
So after prep sanding you don’t have to sand anymore ?
I have a personal project coming soon, I'll post everything, screw ups and mistakes , I'm not a painter , but is going to be a challenge for me.
More vids on different types of body work,& painting would be great ! :^)
Great video
You need to mention that you have to wait about 15 minutes between coats
And Sanding helps!!! LOL
dude great video thanks !!!!
great work
awesome job man
Nice work
great job man
What PSI did you run at the gun? What base did you use? what kind of clear?
I left all that information out for a reason. Different brands require different pressure at the tip and some different tip sizes. good stuff!!! great job
thanks. this video great...
