  • Mercedes-AMG has jumped into the hot-hatch category with the new A35. It aims to compete against the likes of the Golf R with its AWD powertrain and 2.0-litre turbo engine producing 306bhp. But is it enough to tempt you away from VW into the more expensive Mercedes and is it a real AMG? We find out.

Kudos for being one of the rare youtubers reviewing the saloon! I also think it's nicer than the hatch. Did the example you drove have adjustable dampers or were they fixed? Not seeing any comparisons between these two options out there.

Cheers! This car had the adaptive suspension. The harshest setting was too stiff for UK roads - left that in normal with everything else ramped up.

Nice short review. I'm planning on getting a A35 saloon soon but was wondering if it's worth upgrading the normal suspension to the adaptive if you've ever compared the two. I've seen some reviews saying the normal suspension although stiff, it's still alright for daily driving and some saying the adaptive dampers is a must.

We haven't driven the regular setup, although previous experience in other cars tells me I'd go for the adaptive. Simple matter being, the regular passive set up is trying to be the best of both worlds, which ultimately means its compromised in some way. Having the ability to remain in comfort for daily use, but stiffen things up for the twisty stuff is useful, particularly in the UK. That being said, if you're happy with a slightly stiffer ride day to day, I can't see it being much of an issue., especially given the saving.

hyaweh definitely go for the adaptive. I have it and it makes such a difference, especially in sport and sport +.

@@RIIICK152 I see, have you tried the standard amg suspension for comparison?

@@RIIICK152 I test drove one earlier today with the standard AMG suspension and according to the salesman, he said there's not really any difference in terms of comfort with the standard and adaptive suspension, the only difference is as you mentioned sport and sport +, the suspension is firmer than the standard AMG suspension.

@@Shiron95 In all honesty he's probably right. It depends where you are from, I live in the countryside with plenty of B roads, so having it does make the ride softer overall and like I said, using it in Sport and Sport + makes it feel much more composed. I did actually test drive one without it and the ride was fine, but a little hard as many reviews say. Like I said it depends where you'll be driving it etc! Good luck with your car!!

I mean….comparing the Merc A35 to a VW Golf is enough in itself. If they’re at similar price points whoever isn’t going for the Merc needs their head checking.
VWs are just not of the same prestige - that alone is better than the VW.
