Let me preface my being poor story with this: we were the kind of poor where every couple of weeks we would pawn our 20 inch t.v. so we could get a snack. When I was in 5th grade I wanted to be a vampire for Halloween. So my mom used flour on my face, crisco to grease my hair, red lipstick for blood, a sheet for my cape and a pair of her silver high heeled knee high boots to finish out my costume. I missed the mark as a vampire and nailed it as a 9 year old transvestite.

We were so poor, we had an outhouse in the woods behind our house instead of a bathroom, and bathed in a big metal laundry tub until Mom rigged a shower to the kitchen faucet and ran it out the window (where she'd hung a big circle with a shower curtain around it). My little brother was scared to go to the outhouse after dark, so we ran Christmas lights out there. I'm 53, but I remember it all like yesterday (probably better! LOL).

Eric Maher, Reminds me of when I was a kid. We lived in a house and behind the house was an alley. Now that alley led to a park 3 blocks away and our house was at the top of the hill. Not far from our house was a quarry that always had semis coming and going but very little traffic so to speak.
Being kids when it snowed we got the idea to sled from my house down the alley and into the park three blocks away, all down hill and crossing 3 streets. But we were smart, we took turns standing at the spots where the alley met the street watching for cars and signal when it was clear to sled. So I get in the sled at the top of the hill get the "all clear" signal and off I go building up speed.
I shoot down the alley and fly over the first street with ease only to see my cousin at the next street waving me off " ABORT, ABORT!!!" but I can do nothing. I cannot stop, turn or anything then I see it. Right in front of me going right to left the front wheels of a semi truck, then the tandem wheels. I thought to myself "I'm screwed now" but the timing was perfect. Just as the landing gear of the trailer passed I went under between the landing gear and the trailer tires and out the other side.
I flew down the alley crossing the 3rd street and straight into the park. Here come all the other boys who had seen what happened, " COOL!", "That was awesome!!" and so went the cheers for 5 , 10 minutes then it got serious " No one tell his mother." That was in about 1971 or 1972 and mom passed in 2014 from cancer and no one ever told her about that day. LOL

Died laughing! My husband and I could totally relate as kids.
Some true stories about being poor:
The closest thing to soda they would get was putting a candy Bottlecap root beer flavor in their water.
In the summer they'd drive to Walmart 40 minutes away to walk around in the air condition since they didn't have ac at home.
Dad would say, "who wants ice cream," they all would say, "me!" And he would reply, "too bad. We don't have any."
It was always such a fun time for us kids when we'd have tornado warnings to go to our neighbor's house and hang out. If they weren't home we had to dig through my mom's tiny closet that was packed to the roof with stuff and hang out in it with our flashlights.
My husband said they were really excited when they actually got cheese and sour cream on their bean burritos that night.

In Florida trailer parks they just assume one of the countless pine trees is gonna fall on you. Kinda like playing the lottery. But winning is losing. Except you get to leave the trailer park.

When I was little I loved to have pretend football games on our coffee table. The only "toys" I had were old combs and broken pens. Those were the players. The combs were definitely more athletic due to the size advantage.
