BATTLE OF BURIBALAM, 1915
The Battle of Buribalam, fought on September 9, 1915, was a significant encounter between the British forces and a group of Indian revolutionaries led by Jatindranath Mukherjee, popularly known as Bagha Jatin. This battle took place near the Buribalam River in Odisha.
Bagha Jatin was a prominent leader of the Indian Independence Movement, renowned for his valor and strategic acumen. He and his associates had been involved in revolutionary activities against the British rule, aiming to overthrow colonial governance through armed resistance. The confrontation at Buribalam was the climax of their efforts, where despite being heavily outnumbered and outgunned, Jatin and his companions displayed remarkable bravery. The battle ended with Jatin being mortally wounded and later succumbing to his injuries, but his heroism left a lasting legacy in the struggle for India's freedom.

Its name, "Panchalingeshwar," comes from the five (pancha) Shivalingas enshrined here, which are believed to have been self-manifested.

A unique feature of the temple is that the Shivalingas are submerged under a stream, and devotees must touch them to offer their prayers.
