The Whale has become my new favorite movie of his since Encino Man, Airheads, and Crash plus his performances in a few episodes of Scrubs. As a truly proud member of the Brenaissance there was never a doubt in my mind that he’d win the Oscar for Best Actor. I sincerely hope that this will result in him getting back to form with lead roles in films regardless of whether they be comedic or dramatic in the near future. 🙌🏻👍🏻👏🏻🎬🎥🏆

This movie was about addiction for me, and it’s so powerful! Talking to other addicts like myself that have watched this and chose to take the steps to get better because like Liz says “you can’t save someone” they do have to want it for themselves. What I really appreciate is you acknowledging that he didn’t want to save himself, he wanted to save his daughter. So yes, this was a beautiful look into someone who has given up on themselves but not the people they love. I also have heard from others who felt like this movie helped them with grief of the passing of someone they loved that was an addict. It’s just really nice to see the impact and not feeling alone❤

There is a reason this movie beat out Elvis for best actor. This is such a different character and Brendan embodied him so well. Much more challenging I think because of how unique the character is. My feeling was that Liz (Hong Chau) has been giving up fighting with him in stages. She probably did fight him the food he ate, but then gave up fighting with him on that and tried to fight him on going to the hospital or some other aspect where she thought she could help him. Because in the end she sort of gives up fighting with him completely when she knows that he is going to die.

This movie was good at showing what depression and grief can do to someone. Charlie mourned the loss of his partner and did so through emotionally eating and as he gained more weight he became more insecure and the more insecure he was the more he ate and went into a viscous cycle until he was told he was going to die.
He didn’t want to help himself, he wanted to help his daughter in which I think he could see was going down a bad path but could only see the beauty and intelligence in her and that she can be amazing if she applies herself.
This movie was heavy, dark and depressing but it was beautifully told and really is a work of art and Brendan deserves every single award he’s won bc of this movie and after finishing it this evening I now understand why it got a 6min standing ovation at the film festival. Because my reaction when it finished while ugly crying was to stand and clap. Because what a performance from the cast and what a script from the writers

We actually have a New Life. My friend went there and I went with them once. They are indeed a culty Christian church. They're pretty good at what they do, too. The services are up beat instead of monotone and boring. They booked one of The Beatles' managers or something to speak. So some "old school rock music industry" dude came in and the service I went to was all Beatles songs with lyric changes.
They put on firework shows every year and had the money to put up a giant eye sore of a cross about two buses tall. So they clearly have wealthier patrons that they wring dry.
Strip away all the "fun" stuff and it's one of those hand in the air swaying back and forth Mob Psycho Happy Mask weirdo churches that remind me of Scientology. They use all the flash to try and get their hooks into you. Luckily, by the time I went with a friend, I had already figured out that it was basically Santa for adults, but with less "evidence". Wish they never built that hideous church, though. A park would've been nice. But that's just my experience with them.

It was very odd for me watching this movie in the cinema. I also struggled with binge eating disorder but now I'm a medical student and it was like being in a consultation with palliative patients. I can't really describe it but you feel deep sadness for what they're going through, but you are also disconnected because you have to be. I can't break down every time I'm in a difficult situation seeing people who have hours or minutes left and I felt exactly the same watching The Whale. It has its problems as a film but I found it very effecting and realistic in its portrayal of health, addiction, and grief.

Man, I could NOT stop sobbing in the theater when I saw this movie. Like full body-shaking, please-nobody-look-at-me-right-now, ugly crying.
Charlie’s story and Brendan’s performance hit me like a bus. I legitimately thought about walking out of the theater at one point because I didn’t think I could handle it but I’m glad I stayed and watched the whole thing. I could relate to a lot of the things Charlie was struggling with so it was a very therapeutic experience for me.
I knew immediately that Brendan would win an Oscar for this and I’m so happy for him that he was deservedly recognized.

    This whole movie triggered me..
June 15,2022 I was admitted into a hospital. I weighed 564 lbs and was experiencing congenital heart failure. I was dying and had no idea until they finally told me. All of these sounds and feelings remind me of a life I once experienced.. it took so much work and effort from the medical staff but they somehow managed to bring me back. I stayed in the hospital for 3 more weeks and some how managed to leave the hospital alive. I’ve lost 197 lbs since that day. I hope this movie resonates with people.

Certainly a tragic tale but not necessary sad. Everything sad that happened, came before. He was already at his low point from the beginning. It just took the rest of the movie for the rest of us to catch up.

Literally paused to type this, but you talking about having an eating disorder and separating yourself yet still being an extrovert hit so hard. It's been a constant struggle in life to fight the urge to eat when I'm alone, cause that feeling of being full is at least feeling something. Doesn't matter that I know that I'm destroying my body because who cares about me anyway. That short term satisfaction of the food you love filling that terrible void of emptiness is so real. It's funny how mental health affects the psyche in such interesting ways and pulls you in directions of self destruction that you're completely aware of but can't stop yourself from doing in the moment. It's been a hard struggle that ebbs and weaves throughout my weekly life. Gaining and losing 15lbs literally weeks apart from one another. But I'm working on it and haven't allowed it to take over or let myself lose control. Anyway, much appreciation

All the actors just killed it. So glad Brendan won the Oscar! I loved this film, it felt like it lived in realism. Most stories about addiction feel so fabricated by Hollywood, as you mentioned it being a play, maybe that medium helped ground it in realism. I agree with what you said about the ending, I just assumed that was all in how Charlie felt at that moment, I doubt it actually occurred that way.

  • @ZulqarnainAidil
    @ZulqarnainAidil Год назад +5

The tragedy of this story is that everyone wants to help and they may have good intentions, but no one actually is and are actually making things worse.
Liz take care of Charlie but enable him and because of her own issues, end up closing Charlie off from people.
Thomas wants to help, but only through his own journey for enlightenment, a journey that has hurt Charlie in the past.
Mary shut Charlie from his own daughter. At first, it was for an understandable reason, but it ended up hurting both Ellie and Charlie.
And Charlie ended up hurting his own daughter. He is obsessed with giving Ellie this huge amount of money in order to at least do one thing right by her, but forget the one thing that she needed the most.
Maybe he found peace when he finally stood up and went to Ellie, something that he should’ve been doing.
The one thing I don’t get is Charlie’s obsession with honesty. I don’t think it’s something that he was deprived of. Maybe it’s about people having ulterior motives in helping him or maybe it’s something that got lost in the conversion to a movie.
