I'm not a fan of last stand monsters that don't have heal and ultimately think this guy is pretty meh. The thing is, even Kron is often better in like the 2nd or 3rd position and IGNORING the last stand because he ends up being a better tank for the rest of the team and there is more value in that then sacrificing the rest of your team and hoping he can carry 1v6 with the last stand. Armored strike really doesn't make sense on a magic monster you're hoping to last stand in the back. Oh but he's a great sneak blocker! Yes I heard the same thing for Runemancer Atuat, sounds great in theory but doesn't work in practice. I could see him being decent in equal opportunity matches surrounded by martyr's where he won't be targeted till the end and can do the armored strike and kill stuff while waiting to last stand when the rest of the team dies. A niche card in my eyes.
Definitely a niche card. I see myself trying to mix it in with lower mana rulesets more than anything. It's certainly not powerful enough to plan around when there's 40+ mana, especially with the threat of Immortalis being on the other side. 20 mana and below though I think it'll have some strong use cases. Jacek + Efreet Elder + one or two Martyrs catches a lot of people off guard in low mana poison rulesets for example, and I think you could see something similar here.

Does Shield Strike work while at the back?
My understanding is that it works like a melee attack!

Yes that is my understanding! It has the same mechanics as a melee attack. Could be wrong though!
