Do you realise that all of this happened after Spock heard from his older self that he sacrificed himself in the alternate timeline? I think he just realises how close the bond between him and Jim is.

Spock has respect for Kelvin Spock's right to find his own way in life.
Look at the scene where Kelvin Spock asks Spock about Khan. It's clear Spock is reluctant to tell anything about his experiences but makes an exception for the threat that Khan poses.

My personal interpretation of Spock forming the Vulcan salute when he presses his hand to Jim’s against the glass is that he’s pleading with him to “live long and prosper” - basically begging him not to die. Just in case this scene wasn’t sad enough for you already.

The transition of the music from Kirk dies to where Uhura covers her face in shock then Spock screams KHHHAAN!! is far better than the music score for Into Darkness at that point. The scene will never be as sad as in the Wrath of Khan for me ,but this music totally conveys Spock's rage which is the suprise here.

It was a fascinating thing to watch.
It rook me years to watch this film. The Wrath of Khan is one of my all time favorite films, and holds the top spot for Star Trek. I did not want it to be ruined by a remake.
You get something, I think could never be achieved.......the perspective of both people in this situation. Spok and Kirk get to suffer loss (To a degree) and get to face their cobiachi maru test.
Both were absolutely brilliant scenes, and done far too well.

In WOK, Kirk and Spock had been through so much together already, but here they've been on a few missions together? Spock's death in WOK was so genuine, so believable, so real. It's actually really simple if you know anything about psychology. People have not learned (for lack of a better term) "that they can't go home again."
It's like the WOW fans wanting vanilla servers back. Even it's not on conscious level these people think if Blizzard gives them vanilla servers they will be transported back to where they were 5 or 10 years ago.
They think their married guild leader will suddenly be able to have time spend raiding.
It's the same thing with this movie remakes. They think when the new Star Trek, Star Wars, Ghostbusters etc come out they are going to be transported back to the age and to the life they had when they 1st saw the movie.
They think that Ghostbusters 3 (the original with the all male cast) was going to bring back their family member that's now dead of cancer. They think they are suddenly going to be 10 years old again and not have to worry about bills and the like.
They don't realize that even IF Ghostbusters 3, Star Wars prequels, the new Star Trek movies, new expansions to WOW etc etc etc was exactly was "as good as the original" meaning it had all the old cast/content whatever that all their problems would still be there.
They would still be the age they are, their family member would still be dead, they would still be going through that divorce.
People have to realize that you can't live in the past you can treasure old memories but you have to make new ones and make the most of what you have now.

Having said all that I do like this alternate version of the music could have somehow been put into the movie. See my comment at the top of the comment section for more detail.
As I said at least get the clef 2:50, Even if it would never be played again just play it at that specific moment. Can you imagine the true emotional gravitas even if they had done that?
It would be like if they did an L-Word reboot and it was Alice that died of cancer. It was Dana that sitting there sobbing. Instead of having a sunflower Dana would have stuffed teddy bear. But some little kid or person has their cellphone playing "You are my sunshine".
So yes what I said is true but sometimes I think writers and director's go overboard in not wanting to redo stuff. I mean I am sure it is some legal mumbo jumbo why they couldn't get the music clef for this scene but still it would have been a nice touch.
It would have added that little extra emotional kick in the teeth.

While it is the reverse of ST2: TWOK, the build up of Spock screaming "KHAN!!!" was taken from Superman The Movie when Chris Reeve's Superman, after pulling a dead Lois Lane out of that crushed car, let that rage build up in him, and like Spock, felt that he let his guard down.

All that's missing here, is Spock turning into the Spirit of Vengeance (ghost rider) himself as Khan's name is shouted in rage.

Kirk and Spock are in love with each other; that's canon. Also, when Vulcans press their hands together in the ta'al (that's the official name for the "live long and prosper" gesture), that's their species version of a kiss. So, if you take away the glass Kirk and Spock are literally kissing here.

You gotta wonder, what was the writer's, producer's, and generally anyone working on the script was thinking, ”how do we make this film like the last one? Similar, but different, this is wrath of khan we're talking about here, spock dies in the end, what would be more tragic than spock dying?" Then the group would murmur for a moment until, say Chris, throws out the idea, "why don't we kill kirk instead? I mean he's technically physically inferior to khan in every way. He exhausts himself just punching him with no reactions earlier, so why would the death of one friend suddenly make him super human?"
