This may come off weird but I thought it, so I had to say it.
You are such an inspiration. I am 30, I don’t have kids yet but I hope to start in the next couple of years. And just watching you be so involved in your kids education and advocating for them (and others) going to school board meetings, etc - I want to strive to be a parent like you because you seem like an amazing mom!

Totally interested in another video highlighting what you learned! That would be really helpful and informative.

You are a treasure, Rachel, out here doing such good work 💪 Your impostor syndrome is lying to you!

It's so cool that they clearly see and support what you do as a literacy activist and wanted to fly you out on their own dime. Glad to see you get that kind of recognition!

Oh boy, saw my state's senator Bill Cassidy. Curious what he had to say... Also you are so incredibly inspiring! You use your voice, not everyone is able or willing to do that. You completely deserved to be there!

He and I agree on one thing and one thing only lol and it’s the thing he was there to talk about, which was improving literacy rates through evidence based measures.

I am so interested in hearing more details. My school board is currently split in half on whether diversity and accurate history should be taught in our school district, so I want all the info

Thanks Rachel for going to DC to promote literacy. It’s such a valuable way to learn and further advance the cause. I totally empathize with imposter syndrome. Also, big conferences are so exhausting, but can be really worth it. So thanks again.
At 20:00 you are looking at book called Wash Day, and there is a book on the shelf right next to it titled Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi. It is an autobiographical graphic novel from the time of the fall of the Shah of Iran told from her (as a child’s) perspective. I highly recommend it!

Ahh you were in my neighborhood! Hope you had a great time! And you're awesome for the advocacy you're doing!! Don't get overwhelmed feeling like you need to advocate for every single issue - what you're doing is still making a huge difference, and it's better that you are able to use your energy to strongly advocate in a few areas, rather than stretch yourself too thin and get burned out!

I'm as interested in your advocacy as I am your book reviews. It's fascinating and inspiring to see your passion in both areas.

You should definitely come back and check out Old Town Books. They’re expanding to have a secondary store just focused on children’s books soon. I went to Kramer’s all the time in my 20s.
Try to visit the Library of Congress for a tour next time too. Clinton took the Russian president at the time there. He looked around and asked how we had such a beautiful building without a czar.

Thanks for sharing this blog. Going through the bookstores with you was such a nice chill vibe. Also, I have to echo what several others have said in the comments. Your work is important, and you deserved to be there too. I'm also a dyslexic person, and although I don't have or want kids, you have helped me grow my own passion for literacy. Hope to see more blogs from you in the future.

This is so nice of you but truly I don’t feel like I earned it! Being there made me realize there are so many parents who deserved it more than I. There are people out there truly making huge changes in their community

@@ReadswithRachelIt's absolutely earned, in my opinion! You do so much work to promote media literacy and to address issues surrounding book banning. That absolutely deserves to be recognized! Plus, I think you're one of the most trustworthy reviewers I've come across. I really appreciate your insight on the books you discuss and I trust that you've done your research on the topics you're discussing

Your work is not insignificant!! When you think about the fact that so many people aren't saying or doing anything about this issue that is SO IMPORTANT, the fact that you're spending the time posting online, going to meetings, advocating for your own kids and listening to other people's issues so you can better advocate for those people as well - that matters. Don't minimize your impact - your voice matters!
