    Straight to the point. No mumbo-jumbo or annoying background music.
    I have to some small repairs on an extension cord. Don't want to solder, its a mess. A very helpful video for non-electricians like me. 😆

    Thanks guy. I've been toying with electronic's and DC wiring for over 60 yrs but I never used or learned how to use butt connectors until just now! Sure beats soldering. Especially with 0 - 10 gauge.

      they have lots of cool butt connectors now, with the solder in the middle , just heat with heat gun and it connects and solders!. if you heat most butt connectors, it is shrink tube so it will close down as well.

      well, I am sure everyone has a different idea of correctly, but I have done a few and they all hold pretty well, you can also use a lighter or hair dryer, and the ends are "heat shrink" and they will shrink in around the wire when exposed to heat! Thanks for the comment, and good luck

    I am making a portable fan cooler thingamajig for the summer and wasn't sure how to go about connecting the wires.This was the first video I found when I searched "how to use butt connectors" and you answered all of my questions! Normally I have to watch a few videos or type in different search words before I figure it out, so this was a pleasant surprise. I'm going to check out your other videos too, the eBay ones look interesting. Thanks and have a great Sunday!

    • @MyLooneyBin
      @MyLooneyBin  2 года назад

      Should work out. Most issues come with finding the right connector for the right wire.
      But hopefully the connectors are stored in a fashion that allows you to match the wire. Wires are labeled on the jacket
      Thanks, hope it helps

    If you strip the wire a little longer then needed and some of the wire is exposed to the plastic on the butt connector will this cause a fire?

    • @MyLooneyBin
      @MyLooneyBin  5 лет назад +1

      It is always a good rule of thumb to never have exposed copper (wire). in a situation like that you may be able to just use some electrical tape and wrap it around the wire. Fires are usually caused by a malfunction of some sort. In your case, if the bare wire touches metal, and there is a "short", then the wires will begin to heat up, and if there isn't some kind of safety trip, then a fire could start. This mostly applies to "high voltage" like 120VAC house circuits. Very rarely would you have this issue with low voltage DC circuits. Low voltage DC circuits usually just stop working. These are just general statements, please consult a qualified and insured electrician with any questions.

    When do you use the oval crimp, and when do you use the crimp with the tooth (referencing your crimp tool)? Thanks!

    • @MyLooneyBin
      @MyLooneyBin  3 года назад +1

      my opinion, I don't really know, but the oval would be for solid wire, and the tooth would be for stranded wire. I had never really asked that question before and I couldn't really find a good answer. interesting no one really asks that question more. I am gonna do some digging around and see if I can get an answer. now I am curious!!

      Here was the answer I received from a technician I trust.
      Insulated and non-insulated sir. The oval part is for insulator style.
      The ones with the tooth is for non-insulated that you put heat shrink over! 👍

    Question. Do the wires need to touch each other INSIDE of the connector during crimping? Or does the metal inside the connector create a path

    • @MyLooneyBin
      @MyLooneyBin  2 года назад +2

      It's always good to get them to touch, but as they are crimped in the metal portion of the splice, you are 100% correct, the metal will be the conductor.

    Would if be advised to finish with some electrical tape?

    • @MyLooneyBin
      @MyLooneyBin  5 лет назад +2

      you definitely could, this can help prevent ground faults and such, but if the wire is stripped correctly and crimped correctly, there really shouldn't be any need. But, again, it's not ever a bad idea to wrap up any electrical connection with some tape once you have verified they are secure.

    Can you use a heat shrink maker?

    • @MyLooneyBin
      @MyLooneyBin  3 года назад

      well, there is actually metal inside of these that helps the connection ... these do have a heat shrink feature you could use. after crimping, then apply heat to activate the heat shrink feature of the product

  • @Dnasty1
    @Dnasty1 2 года назад

    is the cylinder inside the buttsplice supposed to be cracked after crimp it? I looked inside and it looks like it cracked a bit but definitely holds the wire.

    • @MyLooneyBin
      @MyLooneyBin  2 года назад

      There is usually a split down the metal, and when you compress the connectors it will "crack". For a better visual appearance, if you center the split on the far side of the crimp, it tends to not show as much. You can play with a few and see, but your correct that it really doesn't matter. Most are heat shrink, so a little heat on them will seal the rubber around everything if desired. Besides the look it's all good and functional!

    • @MyLooneyBin
      @MyLooneyBin  3 года назад

      for under ground? yea, this connection probably wouldn't be weather proof without putting it in a weather proof box .//// if it wasn't underground, maybe some electrical grease or use the ones that have the heat shrink built in .... underground though, I would say a box, maybe heat shrink, but unlikely it will be water tight ...

    Do the stripped wires have to physically touch inside?

    • @MyLooneyBin
      @MyLooneyBin  3 года назад +1

      They do not. The connector has a metal feral on the inside. So as long as each side gets crimped and the wire holds, you should be good. BUT I always like to strip enough and do my best to get them to touch on the inside.
