    We're following you as we teach our Irish Wolfhound/ Saint Bernard puppy. We got him too early so have been extra careful but follow everything you teach and our friend a positive trainer came over today and worked with us an him and said it is going fantastic and that we are ahead of the game.. We wouldn't be where we are with out you. This issue is extremely sensitive for this giant breeds dog and yet he is already 34 lbs at 11 weeks and when he's awake his energy level is higher than high. His height makes it easy for him to jump on things and keeping him excersized safely and enough is a real trick. Any more video's like this would be so appreciated. Thanks again.. Phillup is doing amazing.

    1. Important to have your dog on leash during fetch training.
    2. 5mins of exercise per month old of your dog. 12 months dog = 60mins exercise.
    3. In-between training exercise is also helps to improve your overall training.
    4. Make them organically to get distracted of the beviour you are trying to stop.

    Amazing video! I just got my puppy 3 months ago it we are still trying to get the perfect exercise routine we can do everyday! My only issue is she will play fetch indoors and is doing pretty well (we’re still working on it) but she doesn’t play it outside. I don’t have a fenced in yard and she will run away.. But our friends (the neighbors) do and we go over there 1 or 2 times a week and she LOVES it she also plays with there boxer and she really loves her too! I introduced them the way you say in your videos about that subject. And it helped me so much. We try to play it in their yard but sometimes she gets overwhelmed and too excited to focus. But since we are so close to them I was thinking about possibly asking if I could use there yard while they’re at school and work (because I’m homeschooled) and do some training in the safe environment. I’m really wanting to get one of those super longs leads bc that’ll help me *SO MUCH* anyways sorry for how long this is but the main thing I wanted to say is that your videos have helped me so much I have 2 dogs 1 old dog and then my puppy I started watching your videos probably about 2 years or so. Because I was already planning on getting a puppy in the near future and watching them for my older dog. I’m 11 by the way and thanks to your videos I taught my puppy how to *sit, down, roll over, and paw* I know that isn’t a lot so far but I’m really proud because I’ve done it without the help of my parents!!! ❤️🐶

    This is so helpful to know! It’s been almost 14 years since I last really raised a puppy and I was just a kid at the time. There’s so much new information and new training techniques out there now that I just didn’t really know about. Plus, my late Aussie was such a breeze to train and exercise compared to my new Miniature Schnauzer puppy. I wasn’t sure if I was doing the right things with exercising him and this definitely helped ease my mind that I wasn’t doing anything wrong that could hurt him

    I have a pit that I just adopted from the local shelter, today. He's not really a fan of tug o'war, but that little fella sure does love to play fetch! I throw the tennis ball and he brings it right back and drops it at my feet. He sits, he does down... and we're already working on the leash pulling. He pulls, I stop... he turns and looks at me, and we keep going. So far he's not pulling nearly as much. Granted, I just got him today, and he's 8-9 months old. I'm thinking he'll be a great dog in about a year with continued training. Likes to hump, though...

    These growth plates are also the reason you should hold off spaying and neutering until at least 18-20 months!! You get rid of essential hormones and if you neuter too early it can cause serious bone and joint issues.

      @@naomif9964 Mine would be destroying everything if he only got two 20 minute walks a day- never stops and he is extremely intelligent- all these training tips he gets in minutes so that doesn't hold his focus for long at all! You don't have much of a choice. The one I had before was the same, she got long walks and at 10 years old she used to be mistaken for an older puppy. I think as long as they are not jumping and being too athletic if you have to,you have to!

    The original stock of the Bull Terrier did not have the egg-shaped skull at all. The head is a result of selective breeding by people who used to (still) believe that the "savages" they were conquering were better off because of them.

Once he's amped up, it's also really hard to calm him down. Once the rope is put away, he then just bites me constantly and I have to put him in the pen. Then he's constantly crying to be let out!

Should I put him back in his exercise pen after that or should I just let him keep running around ?

    I️ was wondering if anyone could answer my question. My pup is 16 weeks and she just got her first set of shots last week (15weeks) which is a bit late I️ know. The owner did not give her the shots at the proper age. I’m afraid my pup won’t be socialized and everything by the time she has all her boosters for me to take her out. I️ know taking her outside and showing her the world is key when she’s young, but I️ don’t want to risk her health by her not having all her vaccinations. What should I️ do?
    Thanks Zak for all your videos !!

    • @Bellencer
      @Bellencer 6 лет назад

      Take her out but carry her, don’t let her touch the ground but expose her to all the sights and sounds she needs.
      Also, ask your vet about the risk of disease in your area as if the risk is low in your area it’s actually safe to take a puppy outdoors, as 95% of dogs are fully protected from their first vaccinations.

    I’ve been watching your videos all day. But I’m not sure how to help my puppy. I’m trying to exercise my dog and also teach her not to puppy bite. I’ve been trying to put the toy in her mouth instead of my skin or distract her when she tries to bite. But when I try and play with her, she goes for my arm’s and not the toy. But then she will play with the toy. So I know it’s not the toys. She just really likes to play with my arms. I have huge cuts all over my arms and I really need help to get it to stop before she really hurts me. Any suggestions?

    Do you have a video on how to teach smaller dogs tricks? I have a 5 pound Chihuahua and it's hard to cooperate. I have only taught it high five. It is hard to teach it to lay down,

      those kinda tricks that your refering to, is pretty much the same as any dog. You can be exactly the same and teach the same with any dog.

      I have a Chihuahua too. She was 2.5 pounds when I got her as a puppy, and she learned to sit and lie down within 3 days of getting her. Size doesn't matter. It's the same teaching techniques needed for any other dog. The key is finding out if your dog is food or toy/play motivated and taking things slow/patience. Like people, dogs learn at different paces. Also have to make sure you're being as clear as you intend to be with what you're trying to teach. And get a good dog trainer involved if need be.
      I didn't go to a dog trainer because my dog is paid for by my parents (they gave her to me as a gift and will pay for her until I have a real job) but I had some practice growing up training dogs, and honestly, my dog's not perfect, but we're learning together and I'm happy where we've gotten. She's quiet, loves people, and doesn't chew anything but her own toys. She sits, stays, lies down, spins/turns around, gives paw and high fives. She goes on walks and plays fetch (although she's more interested in sleeping most of the time). We just need to work on her racing to eat everything that falls on the floor and coming when called since that's a safety issue.

    After I play with my puppy, should I crate her? My puppy is 11 weeks old, so it seems she can only exercise 10 minutes a day or 20 minutes spaced out. She'll be 3 months, so I can increase it to 15 minutes. Her crate is in the playpen along with her litter box, but I can't leave her unattended in the play pen because she pees on the floor rather than in the box and I do take her for a potty break before playtime. Any suggestions?

    Zak, I have a question for you. My dog has recently began to bark only in the backyard during the day and at night. I am afraid someone is going to call the cops on us haha He does not bark inside at all. How do we fix this if we aren't right there when he does this? Just some more info for you: He is a 6 month old chocolate lab. He is very playful and happy. He never gets into fights with other dogs...unless they cannot handle his energy then they get mad at him. Can you help?!?

      Whitley Dahl Are you leaving him alone outside? How can you not be there when he barks?
      If you're leaving him outside alone a lot, of course he's going to yap. Dogs are pack animals, they don't like being alone. He probably thinks he's being punished or is trying to get your attention by barking.
      I would suggest not leaving him alone outside for long periods of time. Either stay outside with him, have someone sit with him or get him another dog to play with or something to do bare minimum.
      If you are leaving him alone outside for long periods that's really not only not good for him but just plain unsafe.

    I have a new 9 month old pointer mix puppy and she has a jealousy problem. She is fine if a human touches her food but if another dog is given food she gets really worked up. This also happens if they get a toy or pet. She only gets jealous around humans when someone has to show someone something on a phone or anything like that.
    I have tried to work on it by getting her and the other dog to sit and give them a treat at the same time but if the other dog is slow to eat it then she starts snapping at their faces.
    I was wondering if there was anything i could to to stop this behavior quickly as we have to go to a friends place who have dogs and my dog has to come along.
    Thanks,
    Erin.

    So I have a 10 month old Maltese and up until now she has been a sweet, fearless and quiet dog. I don’t understand what’s going on with her, if she’s in her teens or what, but suddenly she has started barking intensely at every sound outside (could she be protecting property or me?) and is scared of weird things that she hasn’t paid any attention to before (she also expresses fear by barking btw). She’s also become more snappy at me. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to deal with this? Is it just a phase that will pass? How can I make sure that she won’t develop any bad habits or become an unsure dog throughout this period? I’m so scared that I’m making tons of mistakes and raising a bad dog…

    • @anujaraja9323

      First start by training her when to bark and when not to bark so it doesn't get annoying. Next maybe try to teach her that you love her and that it's OK to touch certain things. If she doesn't feel comfortable around certain items maybe keep it out of sight.
      I'm not a pro dog trainer, but maybe this will help :)

    • @bonegap5270

      Bluebird my six month old puppy also expresses his fear by barking ( he growls too ). I suggest teaching her how to bark on command and to be quiet on command. Or like I do take treats and give them to the dog near the thing they fear so it turns into a positive experience . My dog doesn't like other dogs even though I've socialized him ( I've never taken him to a dog park, that would be painful for both of us ) so I just give him treats when he is quiet and respectful near other dogs. I know your dog may like dogs but this is just in case, never correct them for growling at another dog. They may learn to not give a warning and just attack.

      Dogs in that age typically go through puberty and may be scared by things that have not phased them before and/or start testing your patience by finding new ways to get in trouble or "forget" cues they've known since puppyhood. I think it's important to stay consistent with your training through this time and guide them through it. However it's always good to know that your pup's behaviour is normal. :) Try to find out what scares her and if it's not too bad, try counter conditioning by staying relatively far from the object and giving her treats and next time go closer and next time closer etc etc. There's quite a few helpful videos to counter conditioning on youtube :) If you feel like her fear is getting worse try seeking help by a professional dog trainer or dog behaviorist. You should be fine though, even if it can be very hard to stay patient during this phase :D As an owner with an adolescent dog myself, I wish you good luck! ;)

      Changes in behaviour are typical at that age, but with sudden behavioural changes it's always a good idea to visit the vet's to rule out any health problems that could causing the dog pain or stress. After that, I would recommend a Facebook group named "Reactive Dogs" and an associated website (google "Care for reactive dogs") that explains an efficient and dog-friendly training protocol for treating and preventing fear-based behaviours (or, rather, the dog's fearfulness itself).
      If it's an age-related thing it could even out on its own, however better to be safe than sorry. Try to limit your dog's exposure to scary situations, and to create positive associations with possible triggers. If you are really worried about doing the wrong thing, having a certified force-free dog trainer do a house call might be good investment. There's advice on finding a good trainer on website I suggested, too.

  • @SaroDogTraining
    @SaroDogTraining 6 лет назад +1

    Great video and information. I'd like to add that exercising puppies with high intensity activities like playing with toys like you do in the video, can cause puppies to get stressed and anxious and that is the reason why the puppy in this video is biting on the leash. I highly recommend not to play with puppies like that. That also causes puppies and dogs to develop behaviours like aggression and chasing small animals and much more. I suggest teaching puppies calm exercises and teaching calmness rather than excitement.

    • @lp8969
      @lp8969 6 лет назад +1

      What are some examples of calm exercises? Obedience training is how I teach my malinois to stay calm and this might just be my dog but without activities like tug or fetch she would destroy my house.

      In my experience puppies are prone to getting overstimulated and wild if they're played with or walked too much. Moderation is key. They need the physical activity but take care that you're not pushing them too hard.

    Hi, I have just gotten a dog by finding it on my friends porch. It being winter I couldn’t turn it away. It’s a border collie pit mix and I know needs tons of exercise. However, even when I exercise for over an hour with tug games and physically running him twice a day it’s like it’s never enough. He gets really bad at night a few hours before bed. He is only 3 months so I know patience but is there something I’m not doing. How can I get him tuckered out and calm enough to where he is not spirting and digging circles in the ground.
