- A preserved foot believed to belong to an Everest climber has been found on the north face of the mountain a century after he disappeared.
Andrew "Sandy" Irvine vanished alongside his climbing partner, the famous mountaineer George Mallory, when attempting to reach the summit.
This discovery could potentially help solve whether or not the pair succeeded in becoming the first people to summit Everest, 29 years before Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the top.

This is amazing. I remember the news when they found Mallory's body. I always wondered when they would ever find Irvine.
For sure is, its something that has fascinated me even as a kid. One of life's great mystery perhaps sometimes these things are even better left as a mystery?
Personally convinced they made it, they were last seen 300m from the summit and were above the hilary step. No photo was ever found of Mallorys wife. I guess the answer would lie in the camera if that is ever found.
@@katiem6773 it is amazing, I hope they find the rest of his body and yes they both always interested me and love watching things on Mount Everest.

this is a story that deserves to be big. I’ve always been fascinated by it and gave me the hobby to climb mountains. The fact they managed to climb “one” of the tallest mountains in the world in 1924 is crazy.
When i heard this story my jaw dropped, i hope one day that his body and camera is found. It could have proof that could rewrite history.
The camera is the Holy Grail. Hope they find it.
When you think of the equipment they used to ascend Everest..and compare it to the tech they use nowadays...it's hard not to admire the courage of these men...they were beyond brave.

I used to read the national geographic some time ago (ca 50 yrs) but have given up as am disgusted by the non scientific and bias of its articles
There's a chance that they did make it to the summit, and that whatever happened occurred on the way down. George Mallory had intended to leave a photo of his wife at the summit, and they didn't find it on his remains.
It is with Irvine. The junior climber takes the pictures. Unfortunately Irvines body will never be found his corpse and equipment were removed from the mountain in a fit of pique by a Chinese team in the 70s.
@@timmo491The Chinese found Irvine and never reported it?

@@georgebradley4583 I see. Then that would certainly complicate things.

Being released from a glacier doesn't bode well for the discovery of the camera, as being disgorged by a glacier is like a slow motion blender.
It's amazing that they finally found a part of Irvine 100 years later. It might finally get solved
The most valuable piece of proof that people have always been looking for is the camera that they took with them. If they reached the top they would have taken a picture but after all these years the chances that the tape would be intact and undamaged are slim to non.
@@Mr.V1111in 100 years it’ll be under about 500 foot of snow and ice.

The best input I heard is that no, they did not make the summit because the north face is a very steep and treacherous climb on a good day, and there were strong winds that day. Mallory was in his 40s. When his body was found, it was face down pointed in the direction of Everest. What could have happened is that inexperienced Irvine lost his footing or the rope broke. Either way, we have two great mountaineers found on the 75th and 100th anniversaries, respectively. Mallory and Irvine will be forever on the mountain, which they set out to conquer.
Irvine.

This is one of the most historic discoveries in the history of mountain climbing, I never would have thought that anything could be found after so many decades, but here we are.
If they find the camera with proof that they went all the way in 1924, this would be even more historic.

Omg they found the foot too
I believe they made it they were so close when they were last seen. Most accidents happen on the decent, hopefully the camera will be found.
I agree. One day we will hopefully know!
At last, legendary Irvine's some original accessory was found. Good.

They can still take the foot too the Top and then say he made it.😊
@@buzz5969😂😂😂😂😂😂

And it could be nowhere near, but also exactly where he died (less likely, but possible).
I'm fascinated by Everest stories and this may top them all. Something that always hits me when I see these early climbers is that they had almost no specialized gear or protective clothing to save them from the many threats, yet they took it all on. Truly unique individuals.
Now it's big business and anyone with the funds can try.
Amazing--on the 100th anniversary year of their 1924 attempt. Maybe they'll find some more pieces of his remains, who knows? I would be more interested in the lost camera than old body parts, though...

In an article I read, it was explained that the site has been kept secret to prevent theft and the disturbance of any hidden remains. Irvine also had a camera and it is hoped that it can be found as it might contain pictures of Irvine and Mallory at the summit ... if *they made it to the top.

Yes, I was wondering the same.
@@JohnnyAngel8The camera is a red herring. They need to look for summit rocks
Local small avalanches could shift " stuff " around for years.
When Mallory's body was found, his sun-goggles were in his pocket. Bearing in mind the direction of the sun at the time, this suggests they were on the way down when they met their end, which in turn suggests that they reached the summit. Only the discovery of the camera will settle the issue.
not necessarily - they may have decided to turn back before reaching the summit
Sorry it doesn't follow they made the top, they got a late start, got to the 2nd step, tried in vain to get up, wasted a few hours, then Sandy slipped on the way down. That's the most likely scenario, even if I don't want it to be true.
If reached the top wouldn’t they have left a marker
The summit rocks they were supposed to collect is more promising than a camera
Or give up as they couldn’t get to the top..

as someone whos very used to climbing mountains, i thru hiked the mighty 2200 miles of the Appalachian Trail, its much more dangerous coming down a mountain then going up, our legs are designed to go upwards, if u we slip we end up on our hands and knees, it hurts but not life threatening, but coming down the pressure on the knees can make them buckle, falling going down can lead to a snowball effect where a tumble can lead u to keep going to disasterous results, u cant grab hold to things as easily, head injuries and worse can ensue, ie disappearing over a cliff face. \i reckon they did summit Everest, but slipped and fell and continued to fall to the deaths or so badly injured they froze to death not been able to move, thats it, thanks
this foot is going to solve the mystery of Mallory and Irvine? that's a stretch.
I don't think it will talk
He was so close to being the first person to climb Everest but his foot fell off. Imagine how cold it had to be for his foot to just freeze solid and fall off like that. If he would have just used some good battery heated socks, he would have easily climbed the mountain and made history.
He must have been really tough though because even after his foot fell off, he still managed to walk a long ways. This is obvious because if he didn’t, the rest of his body would be right near his foot. Luckily, people are a lot much more smarter now than they were 100 years ago and use heated socks so that this doesn’t happen to them.
What great news😢

@@tomhenry897…….maybe they did, but after 30 years, the wind blew it away.
Tenzing three, then pulled up Sir Edmund as fourth.
How did they measure a mountains height back then
My guess is triangulation/trigonometry. Surveying, in other words.
--- So they didn't actually "measure" it, they calculated it.
The Brits started on the coast of the southernmost point of India and worked their way up using trigonometry. The final calculations were given to a native Indian who worked out the height of Everest. He was nearly spot on. Just a few feet out.
An early survey found Everest to be exactly 29,000 ft. They thought no one would believe it, so they wrote it as 29,002 ft.
they used a very big tape measure. the height of everest was only confirmed by Mr hillary in 1951 who finally got to the top with the tape measure
Wow amazing 😮
Whether they made it to the summit or not becomes irrelevant because if a climber doesn't achieve the descent he hasn't conquer the mountain!
