I stared trying to learn this by ear last night, from my smart phone speaker no less. I thought, “how hard can this be” but when I began to listen closely and notice the intricacies of the picking pattern I thought “hmm maybe I’d better see what RUclips has on this piece...” Very clear, concise, and approachable - thank you for sharing your gift, sir.
For people without classical guitars and who are having issues with the barre chords, try tuning the guitar down a whole step and putting a capo on the second fret.
I love to play guitars, electric, folk acoustic, and classical. However, songs like "Suzanne" become almost like personal gifts when rendered softly on a classical guitar, sung softly the way Leonard Cohen could. Mr. Neil Diamond is another composer/singer who comes to mind in that genre, and I must state that for me, they're both my principal inspirations for learning to play guitar and sing their music. Being able to do that has gotten me through some difficult times in my life.
Thanks for a great, easy to follow lesson! Have been wanting to learn this song for a long time, as I always felt it would be a very calming, peaceful song to sit and strum and sing along with. One of my favorite songs of all time!!
This is definitely helping as my time and energy permit. Just now I watched without guitar in hand, just to absorb it. I've got the gist of it and all the beginning patterns. And now that I'm thinking more tangibly of the patterns, I'll listen to the original recording again soon to confirm in my head when and where he makes the changes. Anyway, thanks!
Nice lesson. I remember this was one of the first milestone songs that I learnt when self-teaching guitar. Definitely good to have a video on it since it's a little tricky when trying to remember it off the top of my head. From one Leonard to another, R.I.P Cohen
You look like Ryan Reynolds... Good lesson! After learning Suite: Judy Blues eyes for the past two weeks this one was easy to pick up. My fiancé was named after the song and her dad wants me to learn it. Thank you for making that happen!
Thanks for the beautiful lesson! Just made it my goal to learn this song over the next month :) I've always hugely loved the songs of Leonard Cohen and especially his finger style. After seeing him doing it so fast and seemingly easy it looked like something I could never learn but this video definitely gave me more confidence to be able to play it! (in a decent enough way, I'll never even become close to his or your level but that's not my goal anyway, I just wanna have fun :D) And just seeing myself progress in 10 minutes is so magical :) At some point your fingers just do their thing
Good lesson - this is slightly more complex than the pattern that I've been playing... Good tip about the change to A - I must remember to take my time over that. BTW, the intro' is in 6/4, the verse in 4/4, and the coda/chorus/whatever is in 2/4. So says my Leonard Cohen Anthology, anyway!
I cannot build those barre chords fast enough. I have learnt the pattern in no time, but now I am stuck. What should I do? Please, help me! I love this song.
Thank you ! for beginners, it would be easier to display the tabs with the different strings during the video if i can afford some advice. have a lovely day everybody
Hi. This video was realy useful for me, thank you. But, could you make full guitar cover from start to end of the song please? I think it could be realy good to see song in one peace, also for others :) Thanks.
Excellen lesson- one small correction: on the A chords I'm pretty sure the plays D as melody note, not F#. I just listened to the original all the way through & that sounds like the note (Asus 4).
Tabs would be great 😬. Intro with 6/8 is such a Messias Long as you don‘t know it. I made a change to C Chord After intro and Play my Version without barre. Sounds different of course but easier.
Why not just start this complex picking-pattern-lesson with the 'standard' pattern. Rather the unusual version at the start? (then teaching the standard pattern (too fast) as a variation on the first variation, which might be 3\4 rather than 4\4). I am already lost.

If you have problems with the rythm/measure of this song: The intro is in 6/8 and when Cohen starts singing he changes to 4/4. This might help.
