    the saint martin croissants (not actually croissants - there just isn't a direct translation so we make do) are actually over 1200 kcal! (also they're filled with white poppy seeds not almonds) Poznań is such a beautiful city but as you guys said right now a lot of it is under construction (you said your feet kept getting stuck in the cobblestones and that's one of the reasons they're changing it - they were awful to walk on especially in high heels or if you're disabled)

    Well the birthplace of Poland ist Gniezno/Poznań/Giecz. The First capital city was Gniezno. There was a famous event "zjazd gnieźnieński" (sth like Gniezno conference), where the polish Prince met the german king Otto III. Till today is is an important religious place. There is a cathedral as well, with the ramains of St.Adalberus who was killed in Prussia. There is the story that the Prince paid so much gold as the martyr's body weighted to get it back. It is laid in silver coffin as relic and in the 80s happened to be stolen.

    Poznań’s Universities came to prominence before and during WWII, as they had deciphered the original German Enigma code machine in 1932, and handed parts of the machine to the British, during the summer of 1939. Polish mathematicians from Poznań’s Universities had years of ex-perience as cryptologists and directly helped Alan Turing in Bletchley Park with his work in de-ciphering the Nazi Enigma machine. I am delighted that this is recorded in Bletchley Park, so that at least a small number of daily visitors may be acquainted with the full historical facts.

    Now, you have to visit Poznań again, but during summer :) especially Jezioro Maltańskie and Termy Maltańskie nearby are really worth a visit then. Also KontenerART and Nocny Targ Towarzyski are places you have to visit on warm days. If you look for a cool place to stay, I can recommend City Park Poznań (fantastic hotel and lots of great restaurants in this area)

    What you call a „croissant“ (in Polish „rogal“ or „rogalik“) in reality is a „kifli“ in English. Kiflis and croissants have a similar shape, but they are made from very different dough. Other than that, really great video about Poznan, the capital of the region Wielkopolska where I come from!

    • @SzalonyKucharz
      @SzalonyKucharz 2 года назад +1

      Kifli? It is a Hungarian, not an English word. You could as well say they're called 'rugelach' in English (borrowing from Yiddish, quite popular in USA), which at least is a cognate of Polish 'rogalik'. French croissants are in actuality descendants of Austrian rogale (kipferln), brought over there along with other viennoiseries in the early 19th century. The word 'croissant' means crescent (half-moon) and it describes the pastry's shape just the same way that 'rogalik' (a little horned-thingy) does. The dough isn't very different, both pastries use fat-laminated, yeast-fermented dough, the French croissants just use much more butter to separate the layers, the result being a lighter, flakier baked product, usually not filled (though filled version also exist: chocolate, frangipane, etc). Italian croissants (known as cornetti in the south or brioscie in the north of that country) are typically filled, the Anconian and Aversan varieties, filled with marzipan being called 'la polacca' (Polish-style).

    I assure you that the Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski) is still an island, despite the section of the Warta River (known as the Rotten Warta due to high pollution of municipal sewage discharged there for centuries) having had its bed moved eastwards in late 1960s, away from Chwaliszewo neighbourhood. The Island is surrounded on all sides by water, Cybina River on the east and Warta on the west. The Island is accessible via three bridges now: Chrobry's from the Old Town's/City Centre's side, and Mieszko the First's & Jordan's (the old St Roche's) from Śródka / New Town's side. Plus St. Vincent's bridge in the northern, industrial part of the Isle, a combined railway & road bridge.

    Now you got me thinking and I concluded: The meaning of POZNAŃ is: the place where people get to know each other or get to know things/places. There is no such a word in the Polish language, so the meaning is only inferred. It comes from the word "poznać" which means to get to know / discover (people, places, things). Thank you for spelling Poznań correctly, and it would be nice if you also pronounced it correctly ;-).
