Thousands of Eel Traps in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch | The Ocean Cleanup

  • Some of the most common objects we extract from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch are eel traps used to catch hagfish. Here's our operations manager, Glen Kissack, explaining what they are in more detail. Subscribe to stay updated: bit.ly/371k8sN.
    --
Trash accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies. Solving it requires a combination of closing the source, and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.
The ocean is big. Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using conventional methods - vessels and nets - would take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to complete. After fleets of The Ocean Cleanup systems are deployed into every ocean gyre, combined with source reduction, The Ocean Cleanup projects to be able to remove 90% of ocean plastic by 2040.

I'm Shamed to be human. The fact we need Boyan and those like him...
The fact people thoughtlessly pollute and never think twice.
The fact businesses choose to package their products in plastic instead of biodegradable paper to make PENNIES profit per unit is ok.
Consumers and govt agencies alike either turn a blind eye or are complacent because they save a few cents in pass thru savings when companies use the cheaper, less environmentally friendly option.
So it shakes me to be part of this race.
I do my part. As much as 1 person can.
Buy water by gallon and reuse my water bottle. Volunteer for beach cleanups, the annual tree replanting, even compost my food waste for fertilizer and cut down on my garbage. I even ride my bicycle to local errands because even electric cars aren't truly green, yet.
But I'm only 1 person. The power of humans is their strength in numbers.
That means govt needs to MAKE this happen because there are too many greedy, lazy, bad actors out to rely on the individual do the right thing. Sometimes a little nudge is needed. Like getting 5 cents to recycle every bottle. And sometimes we need a shove. With huge fines for littering, etc

If your neighbor uses such tools and catches 100 fish a day and gives his kids a good life and education, what do you do? You do the same of course, because if you use a more eco friendly approach you might only catch 30 fish a day, or the traps could be more expensive. And if you go eco friendly and make your family suffer for it, how does that change anything if everybody else is using plastic? Bottom line is that the people who actually use these products are not to blame. As long as these are legal, they will be used because they are cheap.

The long part is normally tied to a rope, so that the fishermen can pull the trap to the boat. The long part normally returns to the boat.
The cover a lot of times gets lost in the sea with the waves and the fish trying to get out. Also, when you pull the trap to the boat the shape can deform because is made of plastic and the cover pops off. So a lot more of those parts end in the sea.

That's what we need. We need Worldwide regulations that define what can and can not be thrown in the ocean. And also penalties for those who do that can be enforced by the governments within their waters and by units from various countries serving as part of a Ocean Police organized under the UN. Ships from various countries are assigned to patrol duty and work to stop dumping. Put 3D barcodes on products so they can be traced back to who manufactured them and who bought and sold them. Require 24/7 tracking on all ships at all times. Any ship that drops off of tracking should be immediately investigated by the Ocean Patrol using drones or satellites or surface ships. Violators should be announced publicly for the World to see and know who is polluting our oceans.

I would guess that the big part is found less often because it's tied to the line, and the fishermen are nice enough to not throw it overboard when they pull it in just because they've lost the cap. or they're buying extra caps, so they can still use the big part again.

    • @brianwest2775

    • @haveraygunwilltravel
      @haveraygunwilltravel 2 года назад

Could be tied to the trap. The cap can't handle the weight of the catch so the catch pushed the cap out. The main trap gets used many time becomes worn. The more times it's used it fails more often. Eventually they throw the whole thing over board. Just my guess though.

Every trap, rope and net should have to be tagged in some way and connected to it’s boat. So if it goes astray - we can determine where it came from and who’s responsible.
Is 3 boats wasting all these ”eel-traps” or is it 100? Should we punish a few hard or is it a widespread practice that needs to be adressed?
A special ID-tag for boats & traps would give answers to this.
The factories could easily either just stamp the plastic with a 20-digit id-code or easily place an rfid/nfid chip inside those traps, and mark every separate part too.
