The Fans Toys animation accurate interpretation of the character is one of the best Transformers figures I've seen. Both robot and alt modes are fantastic. I have him alongside my original G1 Jetfire and he dwarfs that bot, even though that was one of the bigger G1 toys.
Thanks for putting the spotlight on my favorite G1 toy. I forgot how confusing this Autobot leadership issue and the name switching was with the European toyline back then. That image of Megatron vs. Jetfire sure brought back some memories.
Wow, I knew about some of the controversy of this character, but had no idea it was that widespread. Thanks for sharing the fascinating history (and clearing up the mystery of why he came and went so fast) of this character.
I got the G1 Jetfire toy this past week, and it's a super good toy. I'm really glad design elements from the original figure stuck around. The antenna and helmet design are more interesting to me
The funny thing about Ceji Jousta having the rights to Diaclone in Europe is Ceji also owned Revell in both the US and Europe at the time. Revell created the Robotech name and imported the model kit forms of the VF-1 Valkyrie as the "Robotech Changers" kit line. Harmony Gold then partnered with Revell to turn Robotech into the American version of Macross. So Ceji was part of the controversy from early on.
Ah, Armada. Some of the best days of Transformer history, to me at least. I just loved how Prime was done in the series. Although Jetfire may not want to be pants, he made a good set of pants.
there was a toy released in the rid 2015 toyline depicting a character called "Stormshot". considering that his early working name was going to be "Skyfire", i believe that this was supposed to be a rid 2015 version of the Aligned Continuity Jetfire seen in the "War For Cybertron" and "Fall of Cybertron'" video games. Unfortunately he never appeared in the series itself, however if he had appeared I imagine it would be similar to when the aligned continuity Jazz from the same games appeared in the series. showing up in only 2 episodes, the first would've shown him arriving on earth in some unexplained way and winding up helping to catch one or more of the Alcamore prisoners, and then coming back to help Optimus Prime and his team with the decepticon invasion of earth in the second.
Do the basics on Prowl! Jetfire was my other favorite Autobot (after Prowl). He was one of my favorite toys ever. The design was Japanese fantastic! So much more innovative than American toys. I always wondered why all the changes on the cartoon and comic. Honestly, my biggest gripe was the changes to his head. I loved the simple yet powerful head sculpt of the figure. To me, the other versions were busy and distracting. Trying too hard to change his appearance. Thank you for this informative video.
This guy is amazing. When I got him back in 198? his packaging was huge, only equaled by Optimus Prime himself. I had no idea about Robotech or anything like that, but it was obvious that Jetfire was something different and amazing, even compared to many of the other very well-made Transformers being made at the time.
I tell ya when I was a kid and he came out on shelves. I had ta have him begged my mother day and night .then I got him he was bigger then almost all the autobots and just so cool I still have him in storage. He also was so well built ratcheted arms & legs . The best alt mode I've nothing but good things to say about this toy. Great review.
Same here, except I broke his shoulder joint the first time I tried to transform him. lol, I begged to exchange him fort a new one, but my Dad said he was junk for breaking so easy and wouldn't let me. ...I never got over that, as he was easily the coolest G1 toy ever made. Thanks to ebay, I now have him back in my possession!
Always loved the original version of Jetfire/Skyfire since i was a kid. I remember the days when me and my friend who owns a lot of transformers toys always play after school and i always make sure that i have first dibs on his Jetfire while the others have their own faves. Now, i own a movie version of Jetfire which i combined with my leader class prime and never spearated them for a span of 2 years. Keep up the good work sir Chris, i support you all the way.
My favorite version of Jetfire is from Transformers Revenge of the Fallen I love the way how we looked in the movie, but even though he was elderly character he was really good on the battlefield in Egypt.
One of my favorite characters. Was first introduced to him as Skyfire in the G1 cartoon. Then when I saw the toy I always wondered why his name was Jetfire and he looked like a Robotech robot. Funny how things turn out. I would have to say my top forms for him are 1. G1 Cartoon Skyfire, 2. Armada Jetfire (since he was used as a transport in a couple episodes in G1 I though it was kinda fitting to redo him as a space shuttle), 3. G1 Jetfire toy (Robotech) and 4. Transformers Revenge Of The Fallen Jetfire (Alt. mode only I never liked the Alien or maybe it's Centipede/Transformer Hybrid Child look). I just think his robot mode in the movie was just as much a monstrosity as what they did with Devastator. Was glad to see they made a proper release of the toy for his G1 Cartoon form. Too bad the trouble they had with him early on would of been cool to have had the original in more episodes. Was wondering is you might consider a basics on The Female Autobots and Decepticons.
Looks wise, my favorite incarnation of Jetfire is actually the leader class toy that came out a few years ago. It perfectly meshes the G1 cartoon model and the Macross figure together. Like how it has a Skyfire head sculpt with an optional Valkyrie-esque mask (I use it as a battle mask). It's the best of both worlds! PS: Do the basics on Jazz.
G1 will always be my fav, but that Leader Class Jetfire is great. Hey, please check out my custom job I did on it to make a bit more G1'ish... www.tfw2005.com/boards/threads/generations-jetfire-retro-paint-and-decals.1007274/
If you're talking about that Thrilling 30 Jetfire, I actually saw him at my hobby shop being sold for the rough converted equivalent of 51 USD in the box. I'm still a relatively new TF fan with only a few toys, mostly from recent lines like Power of the Primes. Jetfire's character history both in TF lore as well as his legal headaches and whathaveyou with Macross are really interesting to me, so I've been wondering about the various Jetfire toys out there, and wondering if that Thrilling 30 one is worth it.
@@myriadmediamusings Probably the best you're gonna find for a decent price if you're aiming at a G1 style Jetfire. It's unlikely that Hasbro are going to do a re-release of the original toy, and getting an original it off the secondary market would probably cost an arm and a leg. The Thrilling 30 version is better than the Classics one to boot.
I love the G1 comic origin of Jetfire. For a while there, he and his creation-brothers, the Constructicons, were the very youngest Transformers and bots for whom Earth is very much their home.
5:50 I like how they had the blue Jetfire into a new Autobot name Overcast and to be his brother. 6:00 Out of all of Jetfire character designs, I like the one from Transformers Cybertron the most. From the accent, to green color scheme and cargo plane mode.
My favorite has always been the G1 version. (I liked him enough to eventually get the original variant of the toy, which still included a Macross insignia on the left wing.) I always imagined Jetfire and Skyfire as two different individuals -- Skyfire as the Cybertronian scientist and Jetfire as a Shockwave-built clone of Skyfire who eventually came online as a loyal Autobot warrior.
He's finally getting some more love. Big Bad Toy Store just released a pre-order page as part of the Transformers Masterpiece collection. Looks good so far from the promotional pages.
Here's a fun idea for a story idea centered around Jetfire; Have him form or join a team of Decepticon turncoats and become a Combiner squad that combine to form - Defector!
If you want a durable, posable G1 styled Jetfire, go for the Classics mold from '06. I don't trust the more modern Combiner Wars toy to be durable enough.
primeoetgrunn Yeah, the plastic on recent releases looks cheap af. I did just find the 3rd party Phoenix though, so I think I'll be saving 2500 pennies for that...
I'm a child of the Unicron Trilogy, so the Armada portrayal will always be my favorite. I do, however, quite enjoy the past-friendship-with-Starscream aspect of his G1 cartoon backstory.
My fave incarnation of Jetfire is the one from Transformers Cybertron. Why, you may ask? Let's just say I have a thing for guys with foreign accents and leave it at that. BTW My nickname for Cybertron Jetfire is the "Aussie Aviator".
Too bad the Siege toy hadn't been announced when you were working on this. It's a real treat! And it's the first one to go all in as a G1 cartoon accurate depiction rather than a hybrid of his designs.
I wish we had a movie about just Jetfire, like his relationship with Starscream, his interesting personality and maybe him on Earth during the war or something
Long comment, skip to the TL;DR for a fun fact about one of his toy incarnations: It's 100% the nostalgia of coming home from elementary and seeing the tail end of the Unicron series talking when I say I ultimately prefer the Australian cargo jet version of him. I remember in the later seasons they would have the characters internal monologue while they played the transforming/rolling out B-roll. In one of these sequences he described a situation where you had to get somewhere, and fast even though he's a cargo plane, with everyone counting on him. That coupled with his personality/nuggets of great interaction with the human characters made up for his extremely lackluster character development. That final series he was part of may also be the reason I'm so good at math. Hear me out: the show was on thirty minutes after school got out. After the cartoon block I would have responsibilities/playing with the kids outside/dinner/sleep. The biggest chunk of my homework time was spent on math BUT it was also the only work I could do since you can't exactly write or read very effectively during commercial breaks. So I ended up speed running equations which lead to me tutoring math in highschool which lead to going into mathematics in college. All thanks to this conclusion to the series which I didn't even know was a trilogy until this video! Tl;DR I like the Australian version the best, transformers inadvertently made me good at math?! Fun fact: His toy incarnation of his Australian iteration also had a recolor called 'Sky Shadow'. His description reading something to the effect that he had grown tired of the 'passive' role as earths defender while Optimus was away (gathering more Mcguffin keys or leading cybertron proper) so he searched the archives for a deceased Decepticon to steal the identity of. The name fit him a little too well ,ironically, because while the other bots would be plotting against each other or fighting no one suspected this newcomer rising through the ranks... waiting for the right moment to strike when victory would be assured. This is so cool that his 'story' in this cannon would come full circle to see him going back to being amongst decepticons again and just adds so much more to a his characterization!
My favorite incarnation of him has always been the WFC/FOC version. Although I really liked the G1 version and the compelling story of him, there’s just something about the WFC/FOC version that makes me like him more. The design is my personal favorite out here of all of them, his Australian accent is cool, and he was just a badass in those games
Out of all the transformers in the whole series. Jetfire has always been my favorite. I grew up with the Armada version of him and even had the toy with Optimus.
I saw The design in Macross first so when I saw the G1 toys I was really shocked that An anime character was there and I always wondered why. Thanks your the video it answered my questions
For Christmas, my brother and I got Robotech toys. The first time I saw skyfire/jetfire, I thought it was the same toy but bigger and different color schemes. It wasn't until a neighbor got it that I basically confirmed they were one in the same.
I've seen several good ways to use the Jetfire/Skyfire naming issue, I'm in favor of inverting my favorite theory which is Skyfire being the more aggressive sounding name would be his decepticon name then when he changes to be an autobot he'd take the name Jetfire that's just how I'd do things story wise obviously there's the irl legal headache that appears to mostly settled and with Jetfire in siege and earthrise being so awesome I'm glad to see my favorite transformers getting some love!
Well done, sir. You unraveled the complicated, global mess that is Jetfire's career with a certain grace :) excellent work! The only incarnation I have is the original 1984 Autobot version, Macross insignia on the wing and all :) he is complete, though, and beautiful.
Here in the Netherlands the first two years were indeed with Jetfire as leader (distributed by Milton Bradley (MB)), which also gave us a RED Tracks instead of a Blue one among others things. The mini-comic shown was actually drawn by Marvel themselves, and even show Optimus as a background character in the first panel (!). It was confusing to me, as the cartoon DID have Prime as the leader. Still Jetfire was the 'real' leader for me in the beginning (bigger too).
I like how Jetfire just tore off his Deception insignia like it was simply a sticker.

Jetfire ripping out his own spark so his remains could be reformatted into armor and weapons for Optimus is, no pun intended, metal as hell.
I got the G1 Jetfire toy this past week, and it's a super good toy. I'm really glad design elements from the original figure stuck around. The antenna and helmet design are more interesting to me
2:17 Does anyone else hear him say sky f***er?
*It's that traitor Skyfuqer!*
Lmao
someone seems salty about being betrayed
YES
I will never un here that
I still have my Jetfire from the 80s. Favorite toy and out of all the Transformers that I had back then, he is one that always remained.
The funniest joke in all Transformers is knowing Starscream had any friends
I remember that, when I saw Jetfire's first episode, I assumed that he died at the end. My brother and cried a lot after that
Thanks for making these videos! You’ve helped me learn more about Transformers than I ever have!
the gen 1 jetfire toy was one of my absolute favorite toys when i was a kid, i really wish i still had it. seriously this is so nostalgic
Do a Basic on Deadlock/Drift
Lol just for one character
Lol if they won't accept you as a star, you create a character that would be accepted
Yes
@@somphothbsiratsamy3748 Deadlock is Drift when he was a Decepticon and changed his name to Drift after joining the Autobots
WTF? I had no idea that they rerecorded lines in the first season to incorporate the "Skyfire" name! Great video!
I'm not surprised that Japan puts a heavy emphasis on Jetfire and Starscream's dynamic; they've always had a taste for Enemies-to-Lovers.
Ah, Armada.
Some of the best days of Transformer history, to me at least.
I just loved how Prime was done in the series. Although Jetfire may not want to be pants, he made a good set of pants.
My favorite Transformers characters are: Bumblebee - TP Smokescreen - Ratchet - Hound - Drift - Jetfire - Ultra Magnus
Then for Decepticons is: Soundwave - Starscream
there was a toy released in the rid 2015 toyline depicting a character called "Stormshot". considering that his early working name was going to be "Skyfire", i believe that this was supposed to be a rid 2015 version of the Aligned Continuity Jetfire seen in the "War For Cybertron" and "Fall of Cybertron'" video games.
Slowly watching through your BASICS videos. These are great to add background stuff that I wasn't aware of as a kid back during the G1 days.
I actually always wondered why Jetfire was portrayed as leader in that mini-comic, now I finally know. Thanks! Brilliant stuff!
Enjoyed that one! How about one on humans? The Whitwickys, Carly, Chip Chase etc? Hmmm.. too hard.
I love your videos i genuenly get happy everytime
My favorite version of Jetfire is from Transformers Revenge of the Fallen I love the way how we looked in the movie, but even though he was elderly character he was really good on the battlefield in Egypt.
Really enjoyed this episode. Learned more than I thought about this guy!

I wanted that figure badly, since he's a mix of his cartoon design and the original toy.
The upcoming Siege Jetfire looks absolutely incredible, not gonna lie...
JetFire was "THE" toy to get when i was a boy. DinoBots were a close second place.
Now why did I think you were going to leave out the GI Joe Jet Fire! Ill never doubt you again Chris.
Here's a fun idea for a story idea centered around Jetfire; Have him form or join a team of Decepticon turncoats and become a Combiner squad that combine to form - Defector!
These are some of the best transformers videos.
(Also can you please do a basics on the transformers Star Saber)
Something funny you probably didn’t know. In the Netherlands Optimus was trademarked for a bit so in the first 3 issues they used the name jetfire
Would have loved to see jetfire in transformers prime
So great! I had the jetfire g2 toy (grey and blue) in kindergarten (1995) and never knew all this background! Jetfire is awesome!!!
That initial G1 toy was a beast. I think I broke mine within 2 weeks, trying to fit the backpack. Might need to check out the recent versions...
Basics on the Combatrons..also...great video as always man..keep it up...love these little mini docs..
I wish we had a movie about just Jetfire, like his relationship with Starscream, his interesting personality and maybe him on Earth during the war or something
Long comment, skip to the TL;DR for a fun fact about one of his toy incarnations:
It's 100% the nostalgia of coming home from elementary and seeing the tail end of the Unicron series talking when I say I ultimately prefer the Australian cargo jet version of him.
Can you do ones on:
1. Unicron
2. Primus/Cybertron
3. Clones
4. Crossover toys (Star Wars/GI joe)
He did Unicron
Out of all the transformers in the whole series. Jetfire has always been my favorite. I grew up with the Armada version of him and even had the toy with Optimus.
Jetfire was actually reprogrammed in G1 to turn against Megatron
Jetfire is my favorite transformer! Thanks for the video!
I loved jetfire as second in command. He is my favorite character
I've still got my original Jetfire toy, one of the few I managed to keep together to this point. My favorite one I ever had.
Yes, I’ve been waiting for this one!
I saw The design in Macross first so when I saw the G1 toys I was really shocked that An anime character was there and I always wondered why. Thanks your the video it answered my questions
I remember going to the mall with my parents and Jet Fire was just sitting up there on the shelf like.......“Take me home with you”
For Christmas, my brother and I got Robotech toys. The first time I saw skyfire/jetfire, I thought it was the same toy but bigger and different color schemes. It wasn't until a neighbor got it that I basically confirmed they were one in the same.
Another great video Chris! I was surprised you left out Jetfire's figure from the SDCC Revolution box set from 2017.
Hope we get a new up to date basic on Jetfire, especially after Cyberverse and the War for Cybertron Trilogy
It would be cool to see Starscream in the series.
