  • Welcome to the May Garden Update of my BACKYARD GAREN in Zone 6 in British Columbia, Canada! The garden grew a ton while we were away and we arrived home with so much work to do! In this video I give a GARDEN TOUR, get some MAY PLANTINGS done, make some early HARVESTS and have a first TASTE OF THE GARDEN! It's been very windy and rainy at the end of May so I'll show the rest of the garden plantings in the June update! I hope you are all having a WONDERFUL GARDEN SEASON so far!

Your garden is looking LOVELY! Mine is roasting. The various squash plants were great, with beautiful blossoms, but only a couple of small yellow squash resulted. Cucumber plants grew very well, but no cukes. There are some tomatoes on those plants, and we're having some pepper blossoms now. Beans did very well as did the carrots (though I only planted a few). I'm not sure it's worth all the work, but we keep trying. Right now the days are in the 90s so we have the shade cloths covering almost the whole garden (not very big), but I still love seeing it all grow. North Central Florida

Thank you! I’m worried about the heat this year too. It’s slowly killing all of our fruit trees 😔 Well, that and the late or early frosts. Just weather all over the place. It is a lot of work and can be so dissapointing when it doesn’t produce. I can’t seem to stop trying though…
I do have one shade cloth but it’s not enough for the whole yard. Maybe I should get a few more!

I'm excited to see the cost comparison results, I think that is a great idea. I wish I had gotten off my duff and planted a garden this year!

I think the price comparison will be interesting too! 🙂 It’s a lot of work but it’s rewarding too. It’s never too late to go buy a veggie in a pot that you like!😉

Try planting marigolds with the cabbage. I just got my garden in last night…then this morning I forgot about the onion sets. Gonna finish it today. Raised beds done, one flower garden done, veggie garden will be done after onions go in, one small flower patch left. Almost there! And…..I got ground cherry seeds this year. I’ve wanted them but could never find them. Adding more strawberry and veggie raised beds this year if I can. Your garden looks great! I hope this is a good garden year. Now I need to figure out where to put it all! Good luck! 💙🩷💚❤️🧡🦋🦋🦋

Sounds like a great garden! I should be finished with everything this week 🤞🏼 I hope you enjoy the ground cherries! I’m hoping that I still have some come up after doing so much soil work in the beds. Yes…I’ll be trying to eat as much of it as possible 😂 🤣

So far my harvests this year have been my whole tiny arugula crop, my red leaf lettuces, some chinese mustard, and some baby kale! All of those were over wintered though (except the arugula). The new crops aren't quite ready! But I way over planted so should be big harvests soon!

Very nice! I do need to get some more lettuce harvested but we’re chomping our way through the early spinach. 🥬

I haven’t tried it myself but I saw online that cabbage moths are territorial and you can put up decoy moths to keep them away from your garden.
It’s already 90F here in SE Georgia so cabbage season is long over for me. I just harvested my carrots and onions and planted Okra for the hot season.

Oh wow! Thanks for the tip! That is some heat! Our spring had been hot but things have cooled off and it’s been nothing but clouds and rain lately. I’m trying to enjoy it before the heat and wildfires start up for the summer…

YAY! I'm so excited to see the cost comparisons. I've always loved this idea. I bet you make way more than you spend. Esp for those high yielding things. EEK! Gonna be a fun season!

I think the comparison will be so interesting! I suspect you’re right. The prices of this have been going up so hopefully growing my own, even the most expensive way will still be worth it 🤷‍♀️🙂

I'm in the states and the cost of veggie plants is crazy expensive. For the past 30 years we only grow heirloom varieties and start all our own seeds. Over the years we have developed strains of plants that grow best for us. We also make all our own compost. Raise chickens, ducks and quail and one rabbit. Make our own fertilizer from comfrey. No vacations for us.

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  3 месяца назад

That’s awesome! It’s definitely worth it to save your own seeds and start from those! We do have compost piles that help add nutrients back into the soil too. Sounds like you have an amazing set up! Perfect 👍🏼😎🌱

Even if it cost you a little bit more the quality of homegrown is worth the cost. P!us you know what is on your food. Can't wait to follow along.

That’s very true! Measuring just the price comparison does not even begin to include the happiness I feel being able to walk into the yard and pluck a cherry tomato whenever I want. Watching everything grow is so enjoyable! Knowing where your food come from is worth the cost as well!

I live by myself and I travel for work so I can't have a garden but when I retire I may have 2 plants of everything just to have fresh food. I still don't know if it will pay to do that.

When I looked up ounces for a bunch of cilantro the first number google spit out is 2.8 ounces per bunch?

Jessica, unless you garden with non-organic pesticides and such you should really be comparing the cost of organic produce because your produce should be considered as such.
