Irish Bouzouki - MacArthur Road

- Here's a nice reel that I picked up a while ago, somewhere on the webs. It's in E, which is not really a problem when you have a capo but slightly trickier on concertina and the likes. Anyway, I felt like doing some bouzouki tunes, and here's the result.
The bouzouki is a Fylde longscale archtop. Accompaniment is on that same bouzouki, and on guitar.

I am 70 years young, however, why shouldn't I buy and learn to play a Bouzouki ! It has been a pleasure to listen to you play. Many thanks from England.
Join the club Colin! It's never too late to learn an instrument, and then going out and joining others to make music together. English pubs and real ale help too!
Thanks for the encouragement. I started playing the Fiddle three years ago...still learning tho! Looking forward to playing the Bouzouki.
Cheers Colin - just happened to be looking at beginner stuff on the octave mando/irish bouzouki and your post resonated with me (same age); I play guitar and do video tutorials here on RUclips and love to hear about folks taking up new instruments (no matter what age). It's a brilliant way to make new friends too if you can find the right pubs 'n clubs etc!
They don't have live music performers in my part of the UK...I wonder how many people are sat around at home thinking the Same? I shall keep on playing all the same. Good luck in what you are doing.
I'm 66 and just bought a mandolin. Learning. For bazouki you need long fingers.
This video is the reason i bought and learned the Irish Bouzouki. After all these years this is still one of my favorites
So nice to see young people picking up traditional instruments and carrying the torch so to speak. This IS music. Good job!
The blokes who disliked this are probably just jealous. Very nicely done sir.
Or British
@Freedan very childish ones, real normal Irish and British live in peace, many come here and many of us go to the UK, I went and it was great.
When you say 'British', do you count the Welsh and Scottish nations in your assumption? Both countries have a long history of playing folk music. Of course a lot o Welsh people (including myself) and Scottish people don't identify with being British at all these days, they see themselves as Welsh/Scottish and then European.
This has to be the best rendition of this reel that I have ever heard; my all time favourite tune played so melodically. Thanks so much for sharing :)
I'm not lying mate, I can't stop listening to this. Tuned my guitar to DADGAD and put a capo on, tried to learn it by ear. Love it!
You sound like 2 or 3 people playing at once. Excellent.
It sounded that way to me too. I think there was added accompaniment…per his short summary above.
Because there is background music. He still did a phenomenal job not to knock his playing at all!
he is
The bouzouki is a Fylde longscale archtop. Accompaniment is on that same bouzouki, and on guitar. From the description
Around the 1:15 mark you can tell when you drop the boot and go all out amazing rendition of this tune one of my favourites on banjo aswell been playing 6 years now
dude your the man, As a guitarist for over 13 years you've inspired me to get a Bouzouki. Keep Shredding the jams dude!
Me too, Guitarist for only 6 though.
If you can play the guitar do you need lessons to play the bouzouki?
Liam Serarcangeli yes obviously: bouzouki has 8 strings and 4 sets of strings. It's very different. But the same basic concept when it comes to pressing the strings and such
thanks :)
@@liamserarcangeli4344 No you don't need lessons, if you can play a guitar you can figure it out on your own.
From one musician to another, you play this with such grace and skill! I bet you practice a great deal!
Just discovered your channel thanks to a friend, and I must say I'm happy to have arrived here, and quite impressed! Keep going!

Excellent , j'aime beaucoup !
This probably the single video that inspired me to play bouzouki. Now I own a beautiful koa octave mandolin.
I've got a handmade Irish bouzouki. I made it together with the singer/guitarplayer/banjoplayer of my band, who builds guitars and banjos's. Unfortunately the neck was bent too far so the bridge broke over and over again. It took him about 8 years to adjust it as much as he could. I've got a beautiful instrument now. Because a tune I play on the tinwhistle, Mossison's Jig, looked like a fine tune to start playing on the bouzouki, I came across both the videos of you. AMAZING! I'm learning MacArthur's Road from your video now, starting at half the speed. I got a long way to go to reach what you show here. Your playing is so smooth and therefore inspiring. Please add some more.
Wothout this guy i wouldn't know this song.

We added this tune to our set and it's become our favorite, though we play it just a wee bit slower.
Thanks. I'm learning Hammered Dulcimer and that drives me headlong into Irish music. Don't sound unlike a mandolin
Wonderful job

Landed here few minutes after ordering my first bouzouki.... that was a good decision ;)

I wish I had half the speed you got on your fingers! Well done!
