I always just like to point out to people that you don't have to get a CPA. It's a great credential to have and if you can do it by all means do it. But just remember two-thirds of all accountants are not CPAs. The vast majority of accountants will never be CPAs. You can have a very nice career without it. Great credential to have, but it's not an essential to get.

Great video as always, Cal! Recently I've been losing my motivation to study since we're still in lockdown. Most of the time I'd also find studying accounting boring, and I'd easily give up whenever I'd encounter a really difficult lesson, which leads me to procrastination. Thanks for reminding me about the great opportunities waiting for us in the real world, I should definitely remind myself that everyday in order to continue my drive. Have a great day!

Hang in there! I’ve gone through some rough patches where motivation really has dropped off. I know the feeling. Try to visualize what life will be like for you down the road and remember life won’t be this way forever. I’d also recommend studying in a 25 minute increment and then have a 5 minute break. That’s always helped me. Good luck!

I took two undergrad accounting classes for Bachelor’s degree , did very well in classes. What is the best way to study accounting? Also if I am not able to begin graduate school in fall, should I obtain Inuit free bookkeeping certification? Due to health reasons, I am also seeking a return to work, seeking Accounting Clerk, entry level jobs.

      @@calvinator94 I don’t have Twitter. I’ll ask my questions here I guess.
      1. What made you choose accounting?
      2. If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?
      3. What are your feelings on private vs public straight out of college?
      4. I think I heard you say this your 2nd degree, what is your first degree in?
      5. Are you a fan of getting a masters or just pursuing 150 credits to sit for CPA?
      6. Do you think it’s worth it becoming a EA? Do people care that much or not really?
These were just some questions I came up it but I’m interested in what you have to say about them! Thanks Cal.

    • @calvinator94
      @calvinator94  2 года назад +2

@@Bert1010 great questions. Here are my thoughts:
      1. Accounting was the best cost-to-reward ratio for my situation. I had already banked a lot of credits from my first degree in Political Science so it was only about 1.5 years more of school to finish my accounting degree. In my case it didn’t make sense financially to go for the masters. I did take some masters courses though and I will say they are mostly regurgitations of what you learn in undergrad. Those programs are only created because of the arbitrary 150 credit requirement they’ve placed on the exam.
Accounting also has high earning potential. Definitely well into the six figures. So I gauged a 1.5 year pivot was worth it for me to make substantially more over my career.
      2. If I could change things I would’ve studied accounting OR software engineering the first time around. I think that computer science is another extremely strong degree and I would aim to work at a FAANG company. I may a still take my skills there down the road.
      3. Public is the way to go for a minimum of 3 years or longer to sharpen your skills. I personally love the culture of the firm I am at and it’s been incredibly valuable for me so far. Wouldn’t change a thing.
      What’s an EA? Not familiar

    • @calvinator94

@@Bert1010 it was straightforward but I wouldn't say easy. Contact every firm's recruiter as early as possible and build a relationship with them. At the very least try to make it so they are familiar with your name and who you are. I would also recommend reaching out to a couple people who work at the firm, maybe through the recruiter, and take them to lunch. They formula has worked extremely well in my experience. Both groups get to know each other and you get a feel for if you want to actually work for the firm (and they get a good idea of who you are too).
