Some things Mark didn't mention: -there are two Genies in the story, the genie of the ring and of the lamp. The genie of the ring is limited in power ,only able to transport Aladdin and not perform any other act -the genie of the lamp does not wish freedom; in Arabic myth a bound Djinn is a willing servant (Ifrit) -the reason the sorcerer wanted a Chinese boy is that no Arab/Persian would be willing to listen to him. "China" is an old Arab term for anywhere distant and remote. Hence the sorcerer had to journey far away from the Middle East. -the story in fact has a cliffhanger, as all of the 1001 tales end on a cliffhanger

I wish I had an excuse to learn Arabic. You make it sound lyrical. I had thought that Farsi was a more beautiful language (a thousand apologies, wise one!), but now i am no so sure.
You got the thing about Genie/Jinni wrong. The Jinn (collective plural, singular: Jinni, numerical plural: Jinnat) are actually the demons of Abrahamic tradition, called the 'Shedim' in Hebrew literature and 'Daemon' in Greek New Testament texts. Unlike Jews and Muslims, Christians uniquely understand demons as exclusively malevolent and inhabiting the infernal regions as minions of the Devil. In pre-Islamic and pre-Judaic times, the Jinn/Shedim used to be worshiped as tutelary deities, a fact attested by both historians and Muslim and Jewish traditions. The Western concept of the Genie is wholly an orientalist's fantastical understanding of the Arabian Nights tales particularly from the story of the Wonderful Lamp, a.k.a. Aladdin.
If you read the stories mentioned in the "Arabian Nights" book , the character Aladdin was mentioned in a completely different story in which Aladdin happened to be the only son of an Egyptian merchant and then as a teenager this boy leads a caravan in his fir journey to Baghdad.... In that story he gets to know a beautiful girl named Jasmin who was a "jaria" (slave) and Aladdin pays the highest price in an auction to get her and then releases her and marries her. So this story has nothing to do with treasure hidden in a cave that also hides a magic lamp and a magic carpet . Coz this is actually the story of Alibaba who then proposes to the princess Bader-Al-Budoor the daughter of "Wali" (governor) of Shiraz a city in Persia which was then under the Abbasid caliphate control .

it's not called the Arabian Nights, it is originally called 1001 Nights. It was a series of stories which was told by Shahrzad, a Persian princess, to the Indian king called Shahryar. He kills his wife because she commits adultery and begins marrying virgins just to execute them the day after their wedding night. Shahrzad marries him but she starts telling him a bedtime story without finishing it and the story is set in the Arab world. The king doesn't execute Shahrzad because he wants to know the ending to the story while she keeps delaying the whole thing for 1001 nights but by then, the king has fallen in love with her and they live happily ever after.
