  • 25 minute compilation featuring television commercials that were broadcast Saturday mornings in 1959 & 1960 for cereals like Frosty-O's ("sugar-charged!"), Twinkles ("with the storybook package"), Cocoa Puffs, Kix, several Cheerios Kid ads, and Rocky & Bullwinkle pitching for Trix. Other product ads include Kool-Aid and Kool-Pops, Dentyne gum, Almond Joy candy, and PF Flyer shoes. ABC TV show commercials promote The Donna Reed Show, The Real McCoys, The Bugs Bunny Show, and several alarmingly violent westerns including The Rifleman, The Restless Gun, and Sugarfoot. There's also a public service message from Caspar the Friendly Ghost about safety, and an ad for the United Way.
The BetaGems channel also has "1960s/1970s Saturday morning TV commercials 28 minutes," "1972 & 1973 Saturday morning TV commercials 23 minutes," "1972 & 1973 Saturday morning TV commercials 6 minutes," "60s/70s TV commercials: Louise Lasser, John Wayne, Cybill Shepherd, more," "Stoner TV commercials: Screaming Yellow Zonkers, more," "1950s Ovaltine sports star ads Florence Chadwick, more," "1971 Ovaltine: Friend For Life ad agency film, Screaming Yellow Zonkers," "1992 TV's Funniest Commercials, Patrick Duffy host," "TV's Greatest Commercials 1989 Tim Conway & Ed McMahon," "TV's Greatest Commercials II 1989 celebrity edition, Ed McMahon," "1990 Foreign TV Commercials compilation 30 minutes," "1990 World's Best Commercials: David Leisure," "Phil Hartman: Word From Our Sponsor celeb ads," "We'll Be Right Back ad comp hosted by Mr. Whipple, Madge 1989," "1995 Greatest Commercials Ever Made, John Ritter host," and an entire playlist of rare TV ads going back to the 40s in a playlist called "Rare and Lost TV Commercials."
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on RUclips or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area. This upload features materials protected by the Fair Use guidelines of Section 107 of the Copyright Act. Oh the nostalgia. Yeah. I'm 76. Can't believe I was mesmerized by these simple and direct ads and programs without color. We've come a long way and I so it all.

During the 23rd minute, the Bugs Bunny Show - a refreshing reminder that it was, as the VO said, an EVENING program. SO much animation we cherish was for adults at the cinema or on TV: It took some time to become Saturday Morning fare!

It was on Tuesday nights at 7:30pm(et) from 1960 through '62. Repeats followed on ABC's Saturday morning schedule through 1968......then it became "THE BUGS BUNNY/ROAD RUNNER HOUR" on CBS.

Oh, how the commercials have aged! Really like the adverts for regular adventure/action programs as well.

Okay, this was one of those collections full of lines I've been using in everyday conversation since those were first run. I was somewhere on the south side of 10 when these were on but they're stuck in my head like it was still then.

"Twinkles" was originally seen on "KING LEONARDO AND HIS SHORT SUBJECTS" (on NBC), sponsored by General Mills {who also made "Twinkles" cereal ("in the storybook package!")}. They tried featuring those short episodes on "ROCKY AND HIS FRIENDS" as well, but Jay Ward finally insisted they weren't going to be scheduled on *HIS* program.

During the 1960-'61 season, "ROCKY AND HIS FRIENDS" was also sponsored by American Chicle/Adams {Dentyne} and Peter Paul {Almond Joy, Mounds}.

Wow commercials seemed way less obnoxious back then. More calm and less in your face

The voiceovers on the Twinkles segments had to be George S. Irving. Well, except for the voice of Twinkles. And the Frosty O's bear has to be Thurl Ravenscroft. At 19:38 in that promo for The Restless Gun, that's Gloria Talbott, who was the female lead in I Married a Monster from Outer Space. In the Sugarfoot promo, at 22:00 that's Frances Bavier, aka Aunt Bee from The Andy Griffith Show.

"Writin' a letter to the sponsor! Les'see.....'Dear Sponse.......'"
    "That's not his name, Bullwinkle!"
"I know! You'll find out in a moment......."
