This is an old folk song originally recorded by blues man Lead Belly. It about a guy sleeping with another mans wife and her husband is murdered. The singer is asked if she did it & they need to go hide from the law
Facts
This is an interpretation of leadbellys version, but leadbellys certainly wasn't the first to record it. Bill Monroe recorded and popularized it prior to leadbellys set the name "in the pines", and there are several less popular versions recorded prior to monroe
Funny thing is he also reacted to Black Betty which Lead Belly also covered.
Wow I never knew that but it totally makes sense...
The song wasn't originally recorded by Leadbelly. Bill Monroe recorded it years before Leadbelly in a bluegrass style. Dock Walsh recorded it in 1926 in a country style. It's origins is said to come from the hillbilly music culture played by poor white people in the south before country music was born. It dates back to the 1870s at least. It's a form of murder ballad which comes from ireland.
This was recorded from their MTV unplugged show. To see them perform this is quite a sight. You should look it up and see it live.
The whole concert too, and it was my favorite Nirvana album.
Kurt probably asked Courtney this question at least 3 times a week.
Fuck Courtney love. She kill him. The case need to reopen again.
@Dropkick Chester
Facts
Master Carbuncle Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain. If you don't think so you're an idiot.
I'll bet he did. 😟
I doubt he could've found a trashier woman on the entire west coast. She had to have had one of the cluster B personality disorders. I don't know which, but it doesn't matter. They're all poison.
The pines where the sun never shines is a woods with tons of large pine trees close together so it stays dark under the pine trees even on a sunny day. I have been in woods like this many times and it is 100% true. It gives you a feeling of being completely alone. Cheers!
Spot on from an ol gal living in Tenn. Got quiet a few pines around here.
I've never thought of it that way; that he asked nicely and then was screaming it. I've been listening to this classic for 25 years and never thought of that. Very cool insight.
Watch this performance from their Unplugged show. It's a great song, but watching Kurt perform it is half of the experience, especially at the end where he has given his all and takes a deep breath while looking into the camera with his piercing blue eyes. .
“This gotta be personal to sing like that” yep, agree
An Ole Lead Belly song who’s real origin goes back into antiquity well over a century. A fusion of a few songs
Those good mtv unplugged days 🤘
Okay, I found my playlist for today 😎
An encore was refused for this show because Kurt Cobain said "We just can't top that."
Not sure if I should admit.. but Unplugged is my favorite Nirvana.. my only owned album- many covers, and I love it cover to cover. Anything I didn't like at first, has grown on me.
When you said "The survey says," it made me laugh.
Great song. Great cover, should watch the live MTV unplugged video of this ..... definitely worth a watch.
Congrats on 20k+ of those thangs!
U gotta react to the unplugged video. If u really wanna see Kurts pain, and desperation
Look up the original by Leadbelly. Kurt says before this performance that Leadbelly was his favorite , it’s amazing
The pines was where she hid after she killed him, n thats where she slept that night
Remember Kurt ended it all shortly after the unplugged recording... some say because of “her”...
In the pines, sun never shines, cold wind blows. Could also be metaphorical for growing cold/numb to her, retracting within himself.
It’s pretty cool seeing Shock G doing nirvana reaction videos.
You really need to watch it. Live performances are meant to be seen. You get to watch him practically give himself an aneurysm.
It is a cover of Blues legend Leadbelly
5:30 😭😭😭 yah see bitch?! Yah see bitch?! ,😂😂😂 I wasn't really paying attention and then I heard that...it was funny AF!
In the song, I always thought that they both conspired to murder her husband, but that he was the one who actually carried out the dirty deed. He freaked out and is hiding out in the woods (could be metaphorically speaking) and finally makes contact with her.. asking her basically ... what the fuck are we going to do now? Deep down Kurt was singing this song to his wife Courtney Love.
That's Leadbelly, Li'l brah...
Older than your grandfather.
I always thought he killed his girl and buried her out in the woods. Now he's thinking about her in the cold grave where she "slept" last night.
“Let me smell you” 😂😂😂
“You see bitch? He asked nicely 3 times”
5:35 😂😂
lol I am not thinking you are getting the emotion of song, but big thanks for review Nirvana!
"See bitch? He asked ya nice"
why no one sent him inplugged version ?? thats version is a "must see" !
Pine needles are great insulation. Survival tip.
i liked it so i put a subscribe on it
Your most insecure moment is where you shiver the whole night through
under the pines to provide cover
Dude when you pause it this often you lose the impact of his vocals. And the vibe. 👍
Noti gang ✊🏽
9:07 it's a cover song, bro
Is this the MTV unplugged version ?
Yes, audio of that performance
Thanks brotha, my dogs birthday
Happy bday
Did yourself a massive disservice not watching the actual video
No 💻 no Videos. So no disservice here my g
I always thought he is asking a homeless girl if she has a place to rest
@Nick gers?
He is asking a girl where she slept last night and she answers that she was shivering the whole night in the woods ... is it so hard to see how i could come up with that?
No. Its about him murdering the man his wife was cheating him with
#leadbellly
How bout a comedian that sings? Dennis Leary, "Asshole"
Here’s the lyrics
Based off what I’ve read and the lyrics I’d say it’s about a man asking his girlfriend where she was because her husband died. And I’m guessing the part about the woods is her burying the body since it was missing and where would you bury a body, deep in the woods where it’s dark and there’s no light breaking through the trees.
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
Her husband, was a hard working man
Just about a mile from here
His head was found in a driving wheel
But his body never was found
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
The sun, shine
I would shiver the whole night through
👍👍👍👍👍
TOOL 7EMPEST.
looks like you got a better camera?
No same iPhone X my g
The song of no origin.
I think he killed her then himself in the woods
I hate to say it cuz i love nirvana, but it sounds like he used to be molested, and he shivered as it happen, the whole night through
It’s a cover
Nirvana - negative creep
My favorite
a black man wrote this song
Love Nirvana, i was never a hbig fan of the unplugged recordings though.
clair ash .... you are the very first person I’ve heard who has made such a comment. Most people believe them to be one of the most stellar and beautiful performances ever given by Nirvana. To each his own I guess.
clair ash Lol why??
@@tricko8000 just doesn't do it for me.
@@teresas8173 and people are entitled to think that. I didnt hate them, i just thought they where way overrated but that is just my personal opinion.
clair ash What about Reading 92', Live at The Paramount or Live and Loud?
Ryan Upchurch's version of this song is awesome.
