I was a Combat Engineer, got hit by an EFP IED. Lost my driver and had to be resuscitated 3 times myself. Haven't cried from a song in years. Keep it up, brother.
G'day James. If you ever want to have a chat mate I'd love to listen. I'm no journalist or anything but I would love to hear your story and experience.thanks mate hope to hear from you
I was a 12B Combat Engineer in the 693rd Sapper Co., 7th En Bn, 20th Eng Bde (Airborne), RCP 72 operating in Ghazni province OEF 10-11. Did a couple missions clearing routes with Aussies. Had some great times at the FOB, as well. Much love to you Aussie brethren, and all our allies. Sapper's lead the way, all the way.
This will bring a tear to your eye. I had the privilege of leading Sappers and more than a few of my friends were killed in Yugo and Afghanistan. Rest easy Sappers, your job is done.
In 2007, I was the trauma nurse at FB Ripley, next door to the Aussies. Man, does this ever bring back memories, the dust, the ramp ceremonies, standing in those lines. . .
+Brenda Brockett Good to hear from you Brenda. I used to spend some time visiting friends down at Ripley. Good Burritos. The FOB reminded me of Mexico, through I've never really been so I don't really know (to MExico that is). Trauma nursing at Ripley! I'm sure you've seen some things...
+iainfredsmith, I did see a few, the worst and the best of humanity; it was a life-changing experience. What I took away that I value most are the friendships that continue on today, both with my US SF Brothers and with my Aussie Brothers-in-Arms. That I was accepted into that very special brotherhood to the degree I was still amazes me. It is so humbling.
In the US Army from 1994 till 2007. 12B till the day I take my last breath. Best Job I ever had. I would not pick another MOS. To all my fallen brothers rest in peace. See you at the Sappers Keep just outside the pearl gates.
Spent a year in Tarin Kowt at Camp Lundell as a Mentor with the ANA. I went on some missions with the Australians and Dutch, but mainly with the US 3rd SF. Watching this wraps up all that I felt while there and all that I feel now. God bless the Australians and God bless you for your music.
Beautiful song and as an ex british army wife of 22.5 yrs, the words ring so true. I was lucky, my husband came back after every dangerous tour of Northern Ireland, the Falklands, Bosnia etc. But my heart goes out to the families who never saw their loved ones return as they should have. Well done for the beautiful words and realization for all those who dont know what goes on out in those horrid places. Keep writing and singing, love it x
My boy came home , but he never came back.. now he shares space in a Veteran's cemetery. I pushed him to go and I miss him every day . I am so sorry. Taylor Neil Mereider. 3/30/20
I just watched Australian Story and cried all the way through. My partners Father is SF, we are blessed he has returned home safe after each deployment. Many of his comrades were not so lucky. I cry for them but also their friends and family, I think it is beautiful you are using your passion for immortalising these souls in music. 3
It surprised me to find that Engineers from other countries are also called "Sappers". Even my dad who served in the Polish army in WW2 was a "Saperov" which made me even more proud of him. What really blew me away was recently finding out he had served in 16 Sqn as the first sqn that I served in was 16 Field Squadron. Royal Engineers. Go on dad. Once a sapper always a Sapper.
True. Possibly even older. We were told it was a trench, dug at a diagonal to a fortification so that arrows could not hit the attackers who then undermined the castle walls. BTW this year is the 300th anniversary of the Royal Engineers.
Sapper′s Lullaby by Fred Smith Up past from the Role 2, and down past the gate, out to the flight line We stood in the sun, slouch hat and gun as two caskets passed us by And followed the Padre, on to the Herc. And out in to the pale summer sky We walked back to Poppy's, and went back to work, with the Dust still in our eyes So soldiers, sing me, a sapper′s lullaby You give it your all, Knowing if you should fall That all good things must die These young engineers, whose job is to clear the roads that we may pass Always out front, and when they bear the brunt, man it happens fast Sapper D Smith had a wife and a son, the apple of his eye Snowy Moerland was just 21, way to young to die Soldiers, sing me, a sapper's lullaby You give it your all, Knowing if you should fall That all good things must die So go call your mother, call your old man, on the welfare line Tell em you love em, while you still can, cause all good things must die Soldiers, sing me, a sapper's lullaby You give it your all, Knowing if you should fall That all good things must die All good things must die

Sappers Lead The Way!

Yes I understand the term goes back to the 15th century, derived from the French word 'sappe' meaning trench
True. Possibly even older. We were told it was a trench, dug at a diagonal to a fortification so that arrows could not hit the attackers who then undermined the castle walls. BTW this year is the 300th anniversary of the Royal Engineers.
Yes...and in French the bloke who digs the trench...is a sapeur.
Yep. That's what we were told and the whole thing probably starts off from when we were "sapping" the French. "Once a Sapper always a Sapper." :-D
my brother was in 16 back in the 70's
Follow the Sapper !
3797215 sappers lead the way hooah

Sapper′s Lullaby by Fred Smith
Up past from the Role 2, and down past the gate, out to the flight line
We stood in the sun, slouch hat and gun as two caskets passed us by
And followed the Padre, on to the Herc. And out in to the pale summer sky
We walked back to Poppy's, and went back to work, with the Dust still in our eyes
So soldiers, sing me, a sapper′s lullaby
You give it your all, Knowing if you should fall
That all good things must die
These young engineers, whose job is to clear the roads that we may pass
Always out front, and when they bear the brunt, man it happens fast
Sapper D Smith had a wife and a son, the apple of his eye
Snowy Moerland was just 21, way to young to die
Soldiers, sing me, a sapper's lullaby
You give it your all, Knowing if you should fall
That all good things must die
So go call your mother, call your old man, on the welfare line
Tell em you love em, while you still can, cause all good things must die
Soldiers, sing me, a sapper's lullaby
You give it your all, Knowing if you should fall
That all good things must die
All good things must die
miss ya snowy, smithy and herbie.
