This ABC Australian Story feature, superbly produced and edited by Ben Cheshire, has a look at Fred Smith's work as a musician and diplomat in Afghanistan and on peace building missions in the South Pacific.

I have watched this video many times since first aired and it remains as powerfully relevant 0:54 0:54 and inspiring in 2023. A tragic reason for it’s relevance is that so many places throughout the world are continuously torn apart by brutal political and religious conflicts. What is inspiring about it is of course Fred Smith’s rare and unique contribution and leadership through his music, compassion, humour and commitment. Not a week goes by without me playing one of his songs and two which bring tears and deep heartache are “Sapper’s lullaby“ and “Trembling Sky”. Thank you Fred.

I first heard sappers lullaby at the dawn service at 2CER that year , it was in the dark & really hit home . As the sun came up I started to see young blokes on crutches in wheelchairs ...bloody strong emotions that day

swcarp Memorial Day for me after my second tour. As a sapper and a vet it hit me like a ton of bricks but I’m glad someone remembers us.

I had the honour of playing the pipes at the ramp ceremony for Darren and Snowy. I’m ex RAAF maintenance but I offered to play as needed, hoping I’d never have to but sadly had to do it several times in 2010. My respect for you guys in total and unreserved, thanks for keeping us safe 🇦🇺
