I though that was an easy question to guess. I am not from USA neither english is my native language but I could guess it right too. Even the last million question was worded in a way that from all the 4 possible answers, the right answer was truly felt odd and most probable. Same goes for the band name question. They literally asked the hardest question in the beginning, the mayor question. And the life magazine question was hard too but it was from an era he was characteristically interested in. He also literally failed the chess question too... This guy was very lucky to get the questions he got and thus his win was not a surprise.

Went with his gut, tough decision but it definitely paid off, his friend must’ve felt really relieved (like Meredith said) that he didn’t go with his initial guess
Meredith's reaction after Kevin locked in his million dollar final answer was absolutely priceless. She was so genuinely happy to see him win the million! One of the reasons why I loved Meredith when she was on Millionaire.
One of the winners I respect the most, not only because of his kind attitude but also the guts he showed answering the $500,000 - imagine if he got it wrong and his friend was right! He loses $218,000, possibly loses that friend and he's possibly mocked online (for not going with an 80% phone-a-friend)
Something about seeing a humble persons life change in front of their eyes while they risk it at and could lose it all like Kevin did at the $500,000 question but getting it correct anyways alongside the tensity of the music and the crowd cheering gives goosebumps
On the TV series question, he's obviously in doubts because probably he doesn't got time to see much TV. He believes that the audience would know that one, who is actually a poor partner when a tough or more intellectual questions show up. He's able to manage very accurate questions and also knows how society works. Such a smart and super wise player. Hats off to this magical wizard !
I’ve never played chess before in my life, and many others haven’t either. What might seem easy to some would not be to others. Chris Tarrant on the UK version always used to say “they’re only easy if you know the answers”. It’s almost always better to use a lifeline if you’re in doubt than taking a blind guess, it could help you win a million dollars down the line.
Kevin Smith was on the primetime version, but didn't make it out of the ring. The question he's referencing to is that Nectarine/Tangerine question that did Stan Wu in on the Tax-Free edition (Stan made it back for the $0 Winners Special but didn't make it out of the ring).
FBI: Federal Bureau of Investigation CIA: Central Intelligence "Agency" Department of Education Library of Congress What "agency?" AGENCY!!! I never thought about that until recently....
Sometimes the answer is within the question if you read thoroughly enough. But I think the FBI is classified as an agency as well. Not the other 2 though.
He was the first contestant to answer the $500,000 question correctly on the syndicated version of the show in the U.S. with Meredith as the host, but he wasn’t the first to answer it. Bob Edgeworth went for the $500,000 question in 2002 having used the 50/50, but went for the wrong answer of Suriname. We will never know if Bob would’ve been the first winner instead, had he answered that question with the correct answer which was Brazil.
Seeing this now all these years later, it seems obvious to me that the answer is CIA, but then I realized that the only reason why I know this is because of this episode lol

This was the version that was syndicated in the Afternoon to any network around America, the way Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy are. The Regis version was exclusive to ABC and aired in primetime.
Syndicated means it does not air on one specific network; in a local television market one station can buy the rights to air the program. Jeopardy! is arguably the most well-known syndicated game show of all-time, even if it has returned to ABC more recently. Kelly Clarkson's talk show is another example of syndicated programming. everybody missed the fact that it was formulated which "AGENCY" only FBI and CIA are agencies. The other two are institutions.
The moment when his friend gave him the wrong answer but he followed his gut and won 500k, was amazing!

Super smart and very polite with a good sense of humor. What a guy.
Kevin really clutched that 500,000 question. I’m glad he was able to pull the win, he’s probably in my top 3 fav winners!
Top 2 would definitely be John Carpenter and Nancy Christy for me.
What a precious, humble ending.
Meredith is such a sweetheart. She is so genuinely happy for him.
Meredith is such a sweet heart. Such a warm lovely lady!
Very very humble man; a well deserving contestant
When he said "please let my mom know" I'm not crying, you are.

His beard covered in confetti and he still asks politely to ask her to let his mom know. That says it all....
He’s so cute! So happy he won the money for his family :)

I got emotional when he publicly thanked his mom at the end
