If it was four counties from South America, it would have made it a harder question to answer. A lot of people still had dial up and that was slow back then, also you couldn't call and be online at the same time. My family still had dial up in 2000. The clicking was possibly the sound of a corded phone making noise. I just think his phone-a-friend was with a group of people and somebody knew the answer.
