When the record execs said that the marimba solo was too long and had to be cut, Bruce Blackman stood firm that the marimba solo would stay. Thank you Bruce!
I met Bo when he became my tap dance teacher in the late 70’s. He was fabulous and he always wore a Lycra jumpsuit with that deep, center V. I took class from him for years. Awesome dude!
Oh man... I came here after hearing this song and the Marimbo solo and had to see it for my self.... didn't realize there was a whole story behind this..... Amazing Solo
The "one take" was, for him, him preparing for the solo. They taped it while he was "preparing", and told him when he said he was ready, no, he didn't need to do anything else!
You've got to be kidding ... I've been listening to this song for the past 45 years and am just now discovering this? Completely thunderstruck! Wonderful story framed in the best 3:23 all year. Thank you!
My grandmother always said she wanted to "take the scissors to my hair." Looking at Bo and the other awesomely-talented guys here, especially the drummer's hair, I finally understand. Haha!
Bo Wagner also drove the women crazy with his tap-dancing routine... I worked for Starbuck's Lighting dude, Larry, and saw them live several times before going to Navy Boot Camp... Some memorable gigs were at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton and the Toys For Tots concert at the Omni in Atlanta... The guys were all great people...
WOW ...... INFINITY WOW. The song from my youth came on the radio randomly. When I got home I wanted to hear it again, so I came here. in my almost 54 years of life I never knew he was not only a Mouseketeer but also a Doctor who can not only do that but also ROCK a leather one piece and play a xylophone solo that kills it?!?! Welp, they say you learn something new every day and this little diddy is good for at least 2 weeks worth of homework!! Sad to see he has passed a while ago but thankfully we have this floating out there in cyber world to school others like myself. THANK YOU!!!
Yes, I checked that interview out. Wonderful, insightful interview with the late Bo. What a talented, humble and generous man he was. I remember back when the Starbuck song hit the airwaves, that solo of his completely blew my mind. RIP BO.
I was 11 in 1976 and had spent the Summer with my three cousins ( who were 15,17,19 year old girls at the time) and hung out with their friends-it was such an awesome time to be a pre teen , exposed to such iconic music and great young adults. This song blew me away and is an amazing, happy memory in 2024. RIP BO
this is why you have to watch Moonlight you can't just listen to Moonlight. Now I think the the Marimba solo is too short. I first heard this song in California in the 70s when it came out and every time I hear it it instantly makes me feel like I'm back there in the easier times of my youth.
I had no idea he had passed. I corresponded with him after he found a blog post I had written that mentioned the band. He was delighted that I had also played marimba, obviously at a much, much lower level. Lovely guy. Sorry to hear, belatedly, that he has passed away.
Music needed that change in the 70’s and the marimba was pleasantly unexpected in this song. Works pretty well on the Iphone too! Thanks for sharing . RIP Bo.
Wonderful video. That solo was a technical and melodic marvel - amazingly lyrical, and, timeless. It is pure magic. Given that Bo had only been introduced to the song a few minutes before improvising this thing and thought that this particular recording was something of a "trial run" (as explained ins some other videos) is mind blowing. Thanks for assembling this video.
I did not know the MM connection or that it was just a one take improvisation. I was in college when it came out in Arizona; the setting was so different from the hot dry desert, I have always wanted to experience a night anchored at sea. May happen in a few years.
Man, that brings me back to my senior year of high school, listening to it on a really crappy VW sound system. But at 17, I didn't even notice it. Great memories and a great tune. RIP, Bo.
Was just listening to this song today & appreciating what I thought was the Xylophone. Came across your wonderful video, it was perfect, not an 8 or 15 min video that would have made me not want to click on it, but it left me wanting more. They could have played this at his funeral. Great work.
Really neat to see this about Bo. Had no idea. This song has always been a favorite to reminisce to. And the Marimba solo is incredible. Never get tired of hearing it. Thank you for posting.
Great song, have liked it very much since it started getting airplay on the radio. Very laid back. Perfect for summer time. I will have to watch this video a second time--- with the speed slowed down so I can re-read the captions, which seemed to vanish rapidly before I could finish seeing what they said.😄 Our marimba dude looks like a total werewolf on his American Bandstand appearance in this video. That is quite a look. It teeters somewhere between spooky and sexy, LOL.
Here in the UK, this ace number was played on a local radio station called Beacon Radio. This was owned by two Americans who ensured a lot of quality stuff was played. Very different to the National station , the BBC, which completely lacked innovation and imagination. But they did like Jimmy Savile !
@@patrickmckeegan5345 No, funnily enough it was after the "pirate" stations : Radio Caroline et al. Beacon Radio was in a place called Wolverhampton: traditional home of Slade!
Hold on now, so he was not only an amazing dancer to the point where he was featured on television shows as a kid, and also a multi-instrumentalist with a solo considered one of the best of all time, and as if that wasn't enough he then went on to become an medical doctor? They guy must have had an IQ that would put the rest of us to shame!
@@rickmontgomery3037 ...one thing to remember though is that instrumentalists whose specialty is improvising, especially if they have been doing it for years, have a catalog of hundreds, if not thousands, of stored "riffs" - which usually consist of musical ideas for a few bars, or even just a few notes, referred to as a "lick". So, being an improvising musician myself, I can see that he probably had a lot of different ideas already, put them all in the appropriate key of this song, and strung them together in this magnificent solo - this "insider" information in no way takes away from his technical ability or innate talent - to the contrary it highlights the years of hard work that it takes to "make up" a solo like this on the spot.
There is a Bo Wagner interview (his last, unfortunately) here on RUclips where he tells the whole story of that solo. He said he was just practicing, working something up, and they taped it and told him, when he said to go ahead and record, that, no, he was done! Nice story, nice interview, AMAZING guy!
Guess who they picked to play the Marimba upon reaching Heaven's Gates? ❤️❤️❤️ I am a 70s Baby and was only 6 when this came out. I loved this song so much I bought the Album off of Ebay in 2005. So 70s❤️. RIP
When the record execs said that the marimba solo was too long and had to be cut, Bruce Blackman stood firm that the marimba solo would stay. Thank you Bruce!
Fallin in love with that song all over again! To be 16 again!😊👍
As a percussionist, I will say that there will never, ever be a more badass marimba solo. Dude was nails, will never be another one like him
I was with a friend at Disneyland (we were 18) and Starbuck was the band performing that night. It was a great concert.
His solo still.rocks 49yrs later
R I P, Dr. Bo Wagner...you made one of the few, if only marimba solo's on a Billboard #1 hit...and it was AWESOME!!...unforgettable.
@Brain Scott *Dr. Bo Wagner*
#3 Billboard in 1976.
I met Bo when he became my tap dance teacher in the late 70’s. He was fabulous and he always wore a Lycra jumpsuit with that deep, center V. I took class from him for years. Awesome dude!
Amazing!!!!! What a great memory!!
Nice!
Oh man... I came here after hearing this song and the Marimbo solo and had to see it for my self.... didn't realize there was a whole story behind this..... Amazing Solo
How do you even prepare for a marimba solo on a pop song? Inconceivable!
The "one take" was, for him, him preparing for the solo. They taped it while he was "preparing", and told him when he said he was ready, no, he didn't need to do anything else!
Wow, this dude was a major achiever in worldly life !!! I hope he was happy in his personal too.
You've got to be kidding ... I've been listening to this song for the past 45 years and am just now discovering this? Completely thunderstruck! Wonderful story framed in the best 3:23 all year. Thank you!
Thank you so much 🙏
Wow! ❤
Never too late to learn.
Same here- a brand new almost 50 year old song
This majical music made my "summer of '76" unequalled in so many ways.
"Moonlight Feels Right" has been my favourite song for decades, many thanks for your video and the Bo Wagner history lesson.
ok, ok...

My friend Robin Krazny did his last interview. Bo tells the story how it all went down in a impromptu interview with Robin. RIP Bo
Yes, I checked that interview out. Wonderful, insightful interview with the late Bo. What a talented, humble and generous man he was. I remember back when the Starbuck song hit the airwaves, that solo of his completely blew my mind. RIP BO.
A great tribute to a HUGELY talented man! R.I.P. Bo Wagner
A true phenomenon, now enriching heaven imo.
One of my all time favorite songs from 1976 as a 12 yr old. I remember to this day where I was hearing on the radio.
I was 11 in 1976 and had spent the Summer with my three cousins ( who were 15,17,19 year old girls at the time) and hung out with their friends-it was such an awesome time to be a pre teen , exposed to such iconic music and great young adults.

WHAT A MAN WHAT A MAN WHAT A MIGHTY GOOD MAN
Used to hear this when my mom played light FM radio in the 80s. Never knew what was going on with the sound in that track. Thanks for this!
ALWAYS LOVED THIS SONG. EASY, BREEZY. THAT MARIMBA SOLO MADE THE SONG ❤
I had no idea he had passed. I corresponded with him after he found a blog post I had written that mentioned the band. He was delighted that I had also played marimba, obviously at a much, much lower level. Lovely guy. Sorry to hear, belatedly, that he has passed away.

I always liked that song brings back memories.
Awesome as always. RIP BO.
Here I was at that time looking to create an electronic xylophone, and didnt follow through. Now dang it, there he is playing one.
No words could describe BoTalent an amazing marimba playing rest in peace my brother now you play for the Angels
The amount of notes he put into that thing is insane!
That was soooooo well done. Wow!

I can't begin to fathom understanding chord theory enough to pull off something like this in one take
What a wonderful story related to my favourite recording of all time.Still playing this song 45 years on . Cheers.....
Some people just have a rare talent.
I saw Starbuck in 1977. During the instrumental break to "I Got to Know," Bo broke out with a tap dance solo.
Michael Hatfield, I think 2024 will be a great year for your Bo Wagner tribute. All you have to ask yourself is, "Am I hairy enough for this?"
Just one of MANY amazing songs from childhood! Thanks for sharing this cool story. Sounds like he will be greatly missed.
Whoa! Thank you for all this background info, this is incredible!
And for all I know about music and being a fan of Starbuck, I never knew this. Thank you Chris!
What an amazing solo on a great song!
Awesome history presentation. Awesome song too of course!

Sick story. Do more of these please.
Thank you so much
Only got to #3!! Number 1,with a bullet,if you ask me.
Remarkable story about a remarkable man. Thanks!

Awesome piece you put togethor here.
This was an excellent video with a story about a legacy I knew nothing about. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for saying so!
Really neat to see this about Bo. Had no idea. This song has always been a favorite to reminisce to. And the Marimba solo is incredible. Never get tired of hearing it. Thank you for posting.
Awesome 👍 thanks for giving us this!. That midnight special performance was the best! Back when singing live sounded great!
Fucn awesome great song love it

I really enjoyed this
Wonderful tribute! Thank you for sharing❤️
Great song and solo.
Thanks Chris, very well done. I really enjoyed watching that

Was that the radio station on the ship anchored out side of UK territorial waters?

This is awesome. Bo was the man.
Bo was a talented guy. Kansas vocalist Steve Walsh contributed vibes to "Magnum Opus" on the Kansas album "Leftoverture".
One of the greatest solos. Rest Easy Bo.
Saw them play on Midnight Special when i was 14 ,they also played I got to know that also has a marimba solo
talent and soul there
unbelievable!♥️👏
I took tap classes from Bo in late 70s early 80s!
Incredible
Nice vid. R.I.P. Bo.

Okay, who HASN'T done a "air marimba " solo when this song comes on???
Great video!!
How do you only have 62 subscribers? You’re doing God’s work here.
Thank you so much
Really cool, dude. Thanks.
I always loved this song. Why? The solo...
¡Excelente solo!
Thank you!
hard to believe the entire solo was just improvised on the spot....
It's awesome! :)
Exactly, wow.....I've loved this song since I was a little kid back in 1976 and had no idea all these years that it was improvised!

He was a trailblazer with the maillots.
R.I.P.
This has been a real challenge for me to play. Ive been working on it for months. 16th note triplets arent easy to play by any means
Starbuck is from Georgia...In always thought the lead singer had a sweet southern drawl.
The lead singer was from Mississippi
Always liked Burt Reynolds...
Bo was a cool dude
What an interesting person.
A certain coffee shop got its name from where?
What's not to like about this, which didnt hit the chart here in the UK by the way! How f*cking not?
I did not know he was gay and his husband/partner was Chet DeMilo. RIP Bo 🙏🙏🙏
That’s wonderful!!! I did not either ❤️
It’s is. Happy to know that he lived his life privately and without ridicule from any media in those days!
When you fast forward to the guitar solo; except in this case... mallets
Your captions move to fast
quite an alphabet soup following his name at the end there -- a real slacker
Aaaaaaaand Bo Wagner was GAY! One important tidbit you left out. It matters because when he was growing up this would have been considered a TRAVESTY
I wish I had known, that rules!
IQ must have been 180
