Greatest songwriter of all time. Greatest performer of all time. Yet he still eats the microphone.

He's always had a habit of eating the microphone. It's funny.

But the minute they hold the mic away from their mouth they are accused of miming. Look at Barry Manilow for example.

Regarding "eating the microphone" There are two schools of thought on that. I sing and do an acoustic guitar/vocal show, and my vocal teacher who is a phenomenal singer/performer/entertainer eats the mic and that is what he teaches. His position is you raise and lower the volume of your voice on your own, you want to sing softer sing softer, or if you want to sing louder, sing louder, but do it right on the mic, basically do the dynamics with your voice, not by pulling in and out of the mic. Whats the point of singing louder so that the part is louder to the audience when you just pull away from the mic, then the effect of singing the part louder so that they audience hears it louder and then hears the dynamics is moot. I agree with him, some people go way way overboard with lowering the mic down when they go louder, it's dumb because then the volume drops thru the sound system, it doesn't go louder. Dynamic mics work best when you eat them, not when you pull away from them. The best performances have big swings in volume (dynamics) and a dynamic mic will work best when the performer is creating the dynamics with his voice, not by moving in and out of the mic. Audiences just assume that performers pulling in and out of their mic "looks" more professional, I think its just smoke and mirrors and trying do that is just copying performers that do that. I'm not saying that performers that pull in and out are better or worse, but do not automatically assume when a performer and in this case an amazing performer with many years of experience is not doing the best vocal performance that he can because he eats the mic. Of course if you can't control your volume level with your own voice then eating the mic will not work, clearly EJ knows how to do this. Bottom line is its harder to learn to sing dynamically while eating the mic, than by moving in and out of it. It's also easier for an FOH sound guy if the artist is controlling the dynamics with his voice and not by moving the mic.

+990183 I think it's also because an acoustic piano is a loud instrument, and when the singer and pianist are the same person, the microphone is close to the piano which means if they're not "eating" the mic, the piano could overpower quieter parts of the vocal. I've noticed pianists often sing closer to the mic than guitarists.
Incidentally, I don't know if you've ever heard Vitas (Russian pop singer) but he occasionally swings his mic out of range then back again. Vitas' unamplified voice isn't very loud, but it's audible enough to let the audience know he's actually singing live (his performances tend to be so similar to the studio versions that he's sometimes been erroneously accused of lip-synching).

I have read that Sir Elton does have excellent microphone technique. His vocals are always really crystal clear.

Piano work is still outstanding. But overall, EJ seems to be phoning it in.

He performs on average four or more shows a week. I think for a man who is approaching his 70th birthday, his talent is still remarkably intact. I saw him live last year and him and his band were absolutely incredible. He's the sort of performer you need to see live to fully appreciate.
