FYI, Jayston has narrated most of Le Carré's Smiley series. If you like his voice, you will probably like Hugo Speer' s voice. He plays Detective Stone in the BBC TV series by Danny Bocklehurst.
Greene, LeCarre and Buckley were such masters of this genre, because their plotlines were underwritten by the real politics and human tragedies of the complex times they were writing in, and writing about. While I enjoy more recent spy fiction, it's like the difference between eating a substantial, satisfying meal, and eating a Twinkie.
I listen to all of them for mention of the incongruity of the match between ordinary George and the Lady Ann. It adds a certain touch to the grim facts of counter intelligence There are more dangerous matters than the search for Karla. The entanglements and the messes people make!
Oh yes, sorry, of course. My point was more that Jayston overdoes the accent. As you know, a big part of the point about Smiley was that he was not "uppercrust" but married into it with unhappy results.
I know Michael Jayston has a lot of fans but after a while I find his voice really sickly and the overdone received English slightly artificial. It is particularly unctuous when he does smileys own voice.
Jayston’s speech is entirely class neutral. Educated yes, but that’s not the same thing. George Smiley was perhaps unctuous, part of his mask, all things to all men etc. I believe Jayston was brought up in Nottinghamshire in modest circumstances. There is nothing wrong with exercising the English language to its potential. Better that than the ‘I fink e fort’ faction.
There's a whole lifetime of experience in this man's narration. You will never find that in AI voices. Though sadly, many people won't notice.

He’s one of my favourite narrators. Rogue Male is excellent too. Perfect voice for the book.
We notice. The timber tone inflections pace and pauses are what keep me listening. Even if my favourite story the voice is all important
I totally agrees ! I avoid AI-audiobooks ; - they are boringly lifeless .
I will not be listening to any AI voices..
agree..with you🎉
Jayston one of the very best actors and narrators! Sadly missed 🙏
Great voice..
Didn't he play Peter Guillam in one if the TV adaptations?
Thank you for this upload!
Wonderful story, wonderfully read.
A really great narration. better than a movie.
Wonderful narrator .
Love the narrator too!! I’m loving George Smiley’s stories. This is my first one 😊
I'm jealous! You have some of the best books ever in front of you.
I concur.....very beautiful done😊
"beautifully"😅
Thank you. Beautifully rendered.

Have you tried Brian Freemantle spy books? If you like LeCarre, you might enjoy those (at least 24 on Audible)
@@anotherblonde Thanks so much for the tip!! God bless!
Try Alan Furst for a feast
@@virginiacrawford7985 TY ! Will do
Great story wonderfully presented
I don't care for spy stories, however, the Narrator is the reason I'm sticking with this audiobook. I'll be asleep in no time.
LeCarre books are an acquired taste, but different from other spy stories.
Of course! Michael Jayston. Many thanks.
Didn’t he play Peter Guillam in Tinker tv series?
@@SafiaGray He did. Well done. He`ll always be Peter Guillam to many.
Thank you! 🙏
Wonderful narration.
A real treat, that was. :) Thank you!
Fabulous performance. Profound and thrilling book.
The NARRATOR made me "one with" Smiley.
Whatever emotions he "felt", so did I.
10 outta 10.
Excellent, thanks.
Thank you for this, much appreciated.

Good to listen to :-)

Beware the banality of evil!!!
Thursday
The narrators voice reminds me of the actor who played Gwillum in Tinker Tailor.
Guillam😊
He really is the same. The brilliant Michael Jayston.
Unmistakably Michael Jayston - Peter Guillam from the tv dramatisation.

Smiley wasnt fat and small with large clothes hanging from his body. My bullfrog was quite handsome lol

1970s Oxbridge upper crust, I reckon.
In fact he had a modest upbringing and didn't attend Oxbridge.
No, I meant the characters/narrator/John Le Carré. Smiley went to Oxford, for example.
