Naomi Scott absolutely killed it in this movie! She was amazing! Hopefully she starts to gain even more recognition now and starts doing even more big name movies in the future!
The “break a leg scene” was THE scene for me. The buildup and the foreshadowing we saw of the smoke and her coming out of the box earlier in the movie was just perfect.
It kinda reminded me of Britney Spears conservatorship.. how her mom makes her perform and do things after she’s gone through something mental health related
I was shocked at how great Smile 2 was. The first one was just ok but this one somehow felt more original and scarier. Honestly I think Smile 2 might be my favorite horror movie of the year which is wild because there’s been so many great horror movies this year, but Smile 2 really surprised me. 10/10
I went into this movie with only having seen the thumbnails for different trailers, I didn't watch any trailers for this one beforehand! Every moment was a surprise, and once I watched the trailers after seeing the movie, I felt so happy that nothing was spoiled for me. I had a blast at the movie theater, and I'll definitely rewatch this one.
@@dunnowy123 That is how you could interpret it, but personally I feel that does the movie a big disservice and you missed a lot of deeper context and te emotional weight of it all.
@@jasp19 I mean, i think the first one did that perfectly fine. It not only accurately and poignantly depicted what someone going through mental deterioration goes through, and how people begin to abandon them, but ALSO made sense every step of the way. Here, we literally do not know what happened from the moment she is cursed until the end. There are things that happen that are directly contradicted by the ending. So, I was left feeling like...this was all a waste of time.
@@dunnowy123 Well it's a movie and I guess it's good that it generates different opinions. For me the ending didn't take away from what I saw earlier, I lreally enjoyed how they played around with what could be real or not and for me, it took me by surprise and added to the ending, but I can understand why you would not like it!
I loved this movie. Naomi Scott was absolutely incredible. I'd never seen her in anything before now, so she was just an incredibly pleasant surprise. My only complaints were that they didn't advance the lore much and half the movie was her guzzling Voss water. Beyond those two nits, this was a five star banger.
i underestimated the original smile passing it off as cheap popcorn flick, just for it to turn out to be one of our finest horror films and one that actually scared me. i repeated the same mistake with smile 2 thinking the trailer didn’t look good and neither did naomi’s acting. well i had to eat my words completely. naomi was amazing and smile 2 is the scariest movie of the year. i don’t easily scare obviously but this movie made me jump at least 7 times and made me tear up on a scene that wasn’t even ‘scary’. if i thought the original smile was scary then smile 2 makes it look like child’s play. a far superior sequel and i’m very happy to say it’s one of the best movies this year and my favourite horror movie this year!

I loved the first movie, especially the performance of Sosie Bacon who absolutely crushed her role of Rose. I still get chills when she lets out that almost primal scream after falling into the glass table. I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s even better than the first movie which I was not expecting at all.
I thought Rose was a terrible character (not the actor) and that's what annoyed me the most about the first one. Skye is a much better character (again not the acting) so it works better as a concept in my opinion
@@AngelFish479 I haven’t seen the first movie in a while but I don’t remember finding Rose annoying, but I was more talking about the actual acting as I think Sosie did a great job. I’m looking forward to watching the second one and I’ll probably end up at the cinema this weekend.
I already found Smile 1 a pretty intense, coherent and logically flawless story (something soo rare nowadays) so I am pretty excited for when I can finally watch this one
Honestly with Smil3, I hope it’s just absolute chaos, like imagine the opening scene from Bird Box, but it’s just a bunch people running around smiling at eachother, the whole movie the main character has to survive the apocalypse, strategize, and the medical professionals are on the clock trying to find an antidote or vaccine
I was so excited for Smile 2 and it didn't let me down. I was tensed up the entire movie, by the end I felt exhausted LOL. Naomi Scott killedddd it, you were right there with her experiencing all the horror. It must have been so draining to film. I love the jumpscares because this series COMMITS to them with an actual threat, as opposed to just a loud sound or a bird hitting a window or something. When I yelp or jump in my seat this film earned it 100%
Saw it last night and went right to yt after to see if you posted a review! Soooo glad you loved it too, I thought it was better than the first too 😻😻 truly one of the scariest movie I’ve seen in a longgggg time
Thoroughly enjoyed it. The opening scene with the truck hitting the guy nearly made me jump so much I almost fell out of my seat. The movie was immersive and had me in a type of a trance. Hypnotic I suppose. That made the jump scares work well to because I didn’t know when they were coming.
I think there is a way to do a 3rd one, i like the idea of the second one spreading like a plague, how i can see it continuing is with a group of people but they all have the curse and they gotta stick together and find a way to beat this curse
2022 & 2024 really been anazing years for horror. I actually hope the rest of the decade is this great so we can look back at it like we do the 90s & 80s and realize it was really a golden age fir the genre
A good story doesn't need a "reveal" to make it exceptional just as a good story is essentially spoil-proof. The greatest works can be read and watched endlessly because a well-written story contains something special on every viewing. This is why Naomi Scott's performance along with the tight writing turns this into an instant classic.
I liked the uniqueness of the second one, the first one is a bit generic, but I actually found the first one scarier especially the scenes in the mom’s house. The new one had very inventive scares but I wasn’t as freaked out overall
No I'm with you, in my opinion they lost some of the originality with Smile 2, it was like they planned the (predictable) ending first & wrote backwards from there, which kinda sucks. There was zero lore expansion & they didn't even do foreshadowing to make some of the "big reveals" land better (for example there are many creepy ways they could have hinted that her friend wasn't real the whole time!) I liked the production value & Naomi Scott's acting, but the overall film, especially the ending, disappointed me
My expectations were low going in, but I'm glad I still went and gave it a chance because I ended up loving it! Definitely liked it more than the 1st one
IDW got the rights from Paramount for developing a comic book series base on "Smile" (AND other horror properties like "Event Horizon" or "Twilight Zone").
Like you, I LOATHE the CGI blood but I imagine it’s easier to use cgi blood when you’re planning on doing multiple takes and you don’t want to deal with the cleanup each time between takes. I think it’s more of a time constraint issue
Especially with an over the top blood effect, you are looking at an hour between takes of cast and crew standing around billing hours without doing anything.
I was thinking smile 3 could be fresh and new if they actually make a final girl and see how to beat the curse for once. The curse needs a traumatized past to be passed to (presumably) so not everyone in the concert gets it just a group of friends that probable had lived through something really bad and they start dying but maybe now one of them can survive.
I’m excited to see this. Unrelated, but AHS season 13 is potentially bringing back Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Cody Fern and Addison Rae is in talks to being in AHS13. I love ur AHS reviews.
Thank you for reviewing this one! I liked the first one but was hesitating on whether I should go see the second. Now I know I definitely wanna go see it!
Emoji had me scared you hated it 😩😩 i LOVED this movie so much! It was my most anticipated film of 24’ & it paid off! The ending was predictable but it was executed perfectly! The possessed dancers attacking skye was my favorite scene!
I do not agree .. this movie was so predictable and boring especially the last 30 min that was so boring because i knew how it will end since we saw the first.. Plus jumpscares are overdone
I disagree , it actually brings back the essence of a well done horror flick , that’s why we watch horror films for the over done jump scares , I was not expecting him to smash his face with a weight Foh 😂😂😂
My guess for CGI blood other than probably being cheap and not having cleanup is so they can add more/take it away if the people in charge say it’s “too gory” so they don’t have to cut out scenes.
i feel like i watched other movie, again as a said before, Naomi scott was just amazing in this movie and the jumpscares were great, it had more gore also, but thats it. We dont have a story flashed out, we dont know what Skyler liked, how her mother became like that, she's just in the back seat the whole movie, everything happens to her. In the first one Rose goes after to try to understand whats happening and what she can do, Naomi in the movie just goes event to event and suffers, any person watching this would have someone 100% of the time with her to see if shes using again or something. My main problem with the movie wasthis thing of "everything its imagination" its that it goes beyond, we have the friend who has never there the whole movie (even so the friend says hi to the mom, with why would the demon do this and just like the therapist in the first one) so the best scene thats her talking with her mother in the end before killing her, we find out that was just a lie, nothing of that happen because the mother its fine in the audience in the show, so shes being in the hospital, talking with mom, killing her, escaping with the friend, fighting with the demon in the car, arriving and trying to make the plan to die, NOTHING was real. We just erase all that and boom, shes in the show. What? So we have to wonder, what was the last real scene that we watched? the dancers scene? that it looked like a flash mob. So what happens after that, shes just change and goes to the show? the movie wanst supose to leave with more questions, and also my whole teather was laughing everytime the water bottle shows up kkkkkkkk Its a good movie, but not best than the first one. IMO
I went to see smile 2 last weekend and its hands down my favourite horror of the year! I honestly felt like i sat through a 2 hour panic attack, i didnt relax until we got outside 😂 ill definitely be watching it again
LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!! SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE FIRST!!!! This was fun, actually scary, jumped and screamed once, which I never do!!! 😂 One of the best of the year, after The Substance and Oddity! ❤❤❤ Great review! Have a great Halloween! 🎃
I just saw this last night in 4dx and I'm so glad u did a review and loved it. I honestly agree with you about the jump scares and how this one is better than original except for the end scene
I'm assuming that they use CGI blood to make resets between takes go quicker, thus cheaper budgets. Every time you do a practical blood effect, it's a whole deal with changing costumes, cleaning up the set, and redoing make-up and blood packs. And time is money on movie and TV sets.
Can i just say, for anyone who wants to see it, if you can see it in a dolby cinema theater, that is truly the way to watch it. It has to be one of the loudest theater experiences ive ever had, but it was so worth it! The audio was a whole other level of awesome!
I loved smile 2 but I still think the guy kinda ripped off It Follows without the same amount of vibe and creativity. The whole trauma angle feels like forced "deepness" ...the ending to smile 1 felt like it was just an opening to create a franchise. I thought the lead was amazing in this, the cinematography and creative direction was great too. Perfect fun popcorn horror.
I saw this last night. I was pleasantly surprised as I am usually a doubter for sequels, especially in a story such as Smile as the original idea is already out there. I'm not sure it was better than the first, however, had this one been released first (in general) I would have thought it was better. I agree with you on Smile 2 being the end of the series. But all in all, I was entertained for sure. It was well done and a sequel that definitely held water. I still ranked Smile 2 below Oddity, Longlegs, and Cukoo as far as an overall film. But definitely better than some such as The Watchers, In a Violent Nature, Night Swim, Imaginary. Great review. I enjoy your takes on these films.
Now I can't wait to watch this when it comes to streaming! I took Smile for what it was originally as I liked the concept, but if this one is better I'm all in! Thank you for the review without the spoilers! Also I swear Naomi Scott could portray Lady Gaga in a film.
As soon as I heard the premise of this film when it was announced, I knew what the ending was going to be. However, I really enjoyed the journey of getting to the ending. I also agree that Smile 2 should be the last movie of the Smile series.
I feel like they could do ONE more movie and call it Smiles /Smil3 (*title card where the S at the end merges with the E like blood moving around*) where it focuses on the community now dealing with the curse since it’s been spread to thousands of people. But one movie, this doesn’t need a franchise
I wasn’t a big fan of the first smile but this 2nd one was so much fun Parker did such a good job at taking all the criticisms of the first and making the 2nd one better so excited to see what he does for the third one
The cost isn't just the pratical effects crew. There is also the cost of the rest of the crew and the hourly cast/extras standing around doing nothing while the set / props / costume / makeup / effects rigs / etc are reset.
Shocked to hear you say you don’t want a third movie to tie this all up, especially considering they actually fleshed out the lore with Morris and left us wondering if he was even real in this one etc. Anyway a third one is obviously coming so sorry lol but I’m already hyped for it
This review helped me out a lot, I'm planning on seeing Smile 2 this weekend but I haven't seen the first one. I was wondering if it would matter, also this being spoiler free is just awesome!
I walked away pleasantly surprised with Smile, thought it was a bit overlong and Rose wasn't a super interesting protagonist, but Parker really found ways to actually make the smile gimmick creepy. With the psychological bend and it pulling reality-isn't-your-own twists, I was happy. Smile 2 blew it straight out of the water for me and its just unabashedly a really good movie. So much to love, Skye is such an interesting female protagonist (not meek and mild, not passive, she's LOUD, she's ANGRY, even volatile, and I could not get enough of it), it pulls the reality twists so much more interestingly to where I genuinely couldn't predict it EVEN THOUGH IT WAS DONE IN THE FIRST MOVIE, and it just struck me with how DISTURBING the imagery was. I was so into this one, this and Alien Romulus being two sequels in the year that I am just blown away with, plus all of the original horror movies and games, 2024 has been great to me.
i loved it. I actually think i prefer this ending than the first one but yeah, this one is definitely better in my opinion, in maaany ways. I think the concept was awesome and Naomi’s performance was SO good, horror is often overlooked by award shows but i really hope at least one recognizes her acting in this one. I hope she continues doing horror bc WTF. My bf and i were completely alone in the theatre and it really made the experience so much better, the jumpscares were great and really unique. That closet and freezer scene were sooo unnerving and I LOVE IT
I loved the first movie, but since its release, I have been affected by a sibling suicide. Because his method was not in this film, and because I’m aware that ultimately these aren’t actual suicides, I was actually able to watch this movie. I really enjoyed Naomi’s acting.
Can we also talk about the fact that we just had Terrifier 3 overperform at the box office and now we have Smile 2 which is #1 this week that's 2 back to back horror movies at #1 horror is killing it this year on all fronts
Parker Finn actually cleared up that if they do the next Smile, he is going to make sure that the intimate/human nature of the films is going to stay intact. He says while it would be fun to do something chaotic and crazy, Smile is all about the characters over the creature. It’s gotta do something different, but it’s nice he has a clear vision of what makes this franchise work rather than just feeling like you need to get bigger and bigger each time. Also, this movie was excellent. Naomi Scott’s performance is one for the books.
Thought it was much better than the first! The best part was the acting. Even the Gen z humor characters were hilarious. Super fun theatre experience also!
I've seen it twice. I'm going to see it again. I love it. Even on the second viewing, the jump scares still got me. Paramount should consider an Oscar campaign for Naomi Scott.
I loved Naomi Scott in this! I was more interested in her drama story than the actual horror plot. *Spoilers* Watching Skye trying to comprehend what was real and what wasn't was intense! I bought into the entire storyline of Gemma forgiving Skye up until the reveal. The twist , in hindsight, was predictable. I'm kind of disappointed we never got to see Morris try to stop Skye's heart and defeat the demon that way. Oh, well.
I don’t think they use any CGI blood in the movie Parker Finn tries to work with new tools with this one with special effects and practical effects in the mixed and he doesn’t like using CGI in his movies!
The opening scene of this movie was insane!! The way they shot the entire scene without any cuts is CRAZY

IMO
I wasn't planning on watching Smile 2, but now I might consider it 😊
I agree totally about this being better than the first, I was kind of blown away by how good it was.
I think you should do a tierlist ranking of this year's horror movies, just in case you might not forget a few you have watched!
I went to see smile 2 last weekend and its hands down my favourite horror of the year! I honestly felt like i sat through a 2 hour panic attack, i didnt relax until we got outside 😂 ill definitely be watching it again
2024 is the year of horror ❤️ and can’t wait for your end of the year video ❤️
Watched Smile 2 yesterday and I agree that I did enjoy this one more than the first. The Skye Riley EP made for this movie was pretty neat too.
Can i just say, for anyone who wants to see it, if you can see it in a dolby cinema theater, that is truly the way to watch it. It has to be one of the loudest theater experiences ive ever had, but it was so worth it! The audio was a whole other level of awesome!
Good review and cool video Sarah!👍
I loved smile 2 but I still think the guy kinda ripped off It Follows without the same amount of vibe and creativity. The whole trauma angle feels like forced "deepness" ...the ending to smile 1 felt like it was just an opening to create a franchise. I thought the lead was amazing in this, the cinematography and creative direction was great too. Perfect fun popcorn horror.
Whenever someone mentions Smile or Smile 2 I tell them to watch It Follows, amazing film
I also feel like the ending was very similar to the end of Truth or Dare, when the curse gets released through a live stream
Great sequels and prequels this year except for Strangers Chapter 1 😂
AMEN
9 times out of 10 CGI blood is bc sfx crews cost more and are unionized and the big studios HATE that.
I 100% agree that 2024 is one of the best years of Horror that I've ever seen, but some people seem to think the opposite for some reason.
That closet and freezer scene were sooo unnerving and I LOVE IT
If this ends up being a duology of films its a knock out 2 part story but if they make a 3rd one it will probably be my favorite horror trilogy
I loved the first movie, but since its release, I have been affected by a sibling suicide.
Because his method was not in this film, and because I’m aware that ultimately these aren’t actual suicides, I was actually able to watch this movie. I really enjoyed Naomi’s acting.
Yes, looking forward to Heretic too!!!
Can we also talk about the fact that we just had Terrifier 3 overperform at the box office and now we have Smile 2 which is #1 this week that's 2 back to back horror movies at #1 horror is killing it this year on all fronts
I knew you would like it! The horror on it is very 2000s and good. Glad to see you liking another movie.
So glad you loved this one! I agree that it surpassed the original by far. I loved Skyes character and Naomi Scott did an amazingggg job
After joker 2 I'm relieved they got this one alright, because the first time I saw the trailer I was really nervous they gonna bomb this one.
The actress really made the movie 5 stars!! Amazing performance 🎉
You can't delete fake blood on post production. CGI blood can be deleted.
You can, but it IS easier/cheaper to add blood in post than subtract blood in post.
Has to be one more to put an end to the entity’s reign. But I agree, this one could easily get old fast if they try and keep it running past a trilogy
I loved Naomi Scott in this!
I was more interested in her drama story than the actual horror plot.
*Spoilers*
Watching Skye trying to comprehend what was real and what wasn't was intense!
I bought into the entire storyline of Gemma forgiving Skye up until the reveal.
The twist , in hindsight, was predictable.
I'm kind of disappointed we never got to see Morris try to stop Skye's heart and defeat the demon that way.
Oh, well.
All I know is I really wanted a glass bottle of Voss during/after the movie 😮💨
I loved the concept and the main character. The actress did a terrific job with the role. However, I thought it dragged a bit. It felt long 😐
I just watched Smile finally because i heard the second one is good and i want to check it out
They really put something un the water for 2024, because we have so many bangers! Dont know how to make a top 5 at the end
I don’t think they use any CGI blood in the movie Parker Finn tries to work with new tools with this one with special effects and practical effects in the mixed and he doesn’t like using CGI in his movies!
