The Front Room was a very interesting movie. From a spiritual perspective, the mother in law was a witch hiding behind Christianity. Her mission was to destroy the family structure and the peace of the happy home so that she could do a complete takeover, which explains why both Belinda and Norman had strange and unusual dreams. This is a lesson learned not to have certain people live in your house because, in reality, you don't know what their spiritual ties are. The mother in law was nothing but an evil spirit in the household spreading her waste as a form of infection in the house

one thing i will say about making bad decisions in horror movies is that we need to keep in mind that the characters don’t know they’re in a horror. in real life we never expect something bad to happen to us so we’re not as careful as we would be if we knew we were about to be in a horror film.
I'm not a horror fan for this reason. I cannot remove myself from the stupidity and it drives me insane. I'm rational to a fault but it's saved me from a lot of possibly catastrophic situations. 'No, I'm not gonna do that. It feels off' is something I say almost daily lmao
Yes! One of my favorite things to do when watching movies is to ask myself “Okay, what genre does this character THINK they’re in?” It can lead to a lot of very cool discussions (if you’re the type of person that loves to analyze media for fun lol)
Well the odd thing is, I understood their decisions. And I always say, we don’t all make the same sort of decisions when we’re stressed. They needed money, they saw the only answer to their problem. Once you give a skilled manipulator an inch, they’ve already gone a mile.
Haven’t heard many horror creators meantion emetophobia, so thank you first off!! I really can’t understand films that have that much bodily fluids though, most people don’t want to be that sort of uncomfortable watching a movie 😅 huge difference between icky and horrified
I saw The Front Room at its premiere and I have been WAITING for people to see it so we can discuss Edit: they ARE too passive in my experience but since I felt so uncomfortable I gave it a higher ranking
I love an empty theatre. I go at weird times to avoid crowds and I have never heard of a whole screening being cancelled, this evening there was 1 other person in there. Also I feel like Beetlejuice is like the Goonies or Ghostbusters or something, if you grew up with it, it is a classic ,if not, it is "Meh". Anyway, I actually liked The Front Room. It had so many things I love in general (small cast, limited timeline, contained sets, reasonable runtime) I also love good character acting and the Solange character was great in my opinion. I like how every other character was living in her world, the fact that Belinda immediately accepts this person into their life and the weird church sh-tuff gave her even more power as a character and the Husband saying he should just run away as soon as he sees her ,estranged for years, -but money- was a good way to give her more power as well. I am glad people are finding this movie gross and disturbing and it is getting strong reactions. For a movie that is borderline religious horror in a year full of religious horror I feel like this one had a unique take on the concept.
The vertical incision is used primarily when there will be a hysterectomy. This can happen while giving birth in certain types of emergency deliveries. My aunt had the zipper scar with my cousin and I just got one of my very own for a hysterectomy.
I was born in '80 and my mom had a c-section was vertical on top of the stomach. I think thats how it was back in the day, but it was weird to see Brandy with it in modern times lol
I had a similar struggle trying to see this movie! My local theater didn't even play it, I had to go to the next town over, and even there I was the ONLY person in the theater on Saturday opening weekend
I found it so interesting the experience of a movie being replaced by another because of low ticket sales! where I live, I’ve experienced going to the theatre completely alone or having max 5 people in the room! maybe it happens as well here but I wasn’t aware that happened!
With a 20 screen theater, they can do that. But when there is a theater with less than 10 screens and one movie is selling almost no tickets and a second movie is selling out on multiple screens ...
I saw this with my husband and we both really enjoyed this one, not what I was expecting either. I think in today's world of sequels and remakes this was a nice change. I also looked for the short story to read as I wanted to see if it clarified the supernatural elements but as you said it's not available. For me I think this plays into the duality of life, birth and death and how similiar they actual are and as a caregiver and/or mom how quickly you deal with the issues poop and spit up (lol) for examples. Maybe I am looking too deep into it but I liked this one alot. She infuriated me too with some of her choices aka not running upstairs with baby after coming home. Kathryn Hunter was amazing as Solange! Also thats is one of my biggest rants about today's theaters as Beetlejuice was on 7 screens out of the 12 at my theater so no I don't care about your box office numbers as you didn't give other movies a chance to succeed.
It’s funny you say it’s so unbelievable (I agree) but there are politicians suggesting grandparents to help with kids. Just pointing out our experiences are not necessarily the only ones. Some people do this madness. C section scar was old school. My mom had it.
My husband got zero paternity leave. He was only able to be home with me the first 3 days... And two of those were when we were in the hospital. Unfortunately not everyone has paternity leave us or is able to take off for free. If my husband didn't get paid we wouldn't have been able to pay any of our bills.
Wow, Sarah. That’s crazy they replaced it with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice because my theater just plays to an empty theater if no one buys tickets. It’ll even stay open for the two people who see the final movie of the night! Don’t think I’ll be watching this movie…sounds vile
I've always been perplexed by the by the popularity of "Beetlejuice", and I've been around since the cartoon ran on Saturday mornings. Just don't connect with the material. That said, I'm not a fan of "camp horror" nor "slasher" flicks. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate gore and violence, so long as it serves the story. I like cerebral, psychological thrillers that genuinely look into the darkest corners of the human mind. "The Front Room" is an interesting entry for the "Rosemary's Baby-Hereditary Genre", but you nailed it, the dialogue is jarring, and the decisions don't make sense within the context of the movie. They portrayed the husband as an absolute doormat, when he initially warned her and wanted nothing to do with Solange. It was difficult to empathize, as I simply wouldn't tolerate that behaviour.
Oh my god, I could not agree more! This is honestly one of the hardest movies to sit through for me. Some people are going to like this but I was disgusted (and I can deal with some level of disgust in horror movies but... not this type of disgusting). When I wasn't disgusted I was either extremely frustrated, or extremely annoyed. 1/2 out of 5 for me.
Sooooo PAID paternity and even maternity leave is dependent on state and employer regulations. Most companies in the US only offer PAID paternity leave from your own PTO/sick/vacation time so if you don’t have any or only a little bit of this time left for the year you won’t get paid for the time off but you can still take it off as FMLA. Washington state has paid FMLA that is separate from your job where you get paid from the state vs using your own employee PTO. Its very nice. It makes sense that they don’t have a caregiver for memaw, aside from the will, if they were struggling financially because mediCARE (which is the 65+ medical insurance through the state) does not pay for any kind of long term caregivers or long term living facilities like assisted living or nursing homes. MediCAID (healthcare for those who are low/no income) does pay for these long term care services but only if you qualify. This issue with elderly that need more care but may make too much for medicaid leaves a huge huge gap in care for elderly and family members get stuck picking up the pieces and gaps in care. Its incredibly sad and something I’ve personally dealt with and had to see patients go through during my healthcare career. 😢
I didn't get the impression that he was unable to take time off. I got the impression that he CHOSE to go back to work because he was working a career defining case that would have gotten him a promotion.
It’s usually granted after a certain time of employment. My job was after one year of full time employment. When you have a large estate like the step mother Medicare doesn’t cover anything
When you mentioned the movie mother i giggled because i was telling my mom about how the front room was bad but not bad like mother where i legit had to leave the theatre 😭
I had the theater change my showings twice this year. One was for A Quiet Place: Day One and the other was Maxxine because Inside Out 2 was too popular. Lucky, for me, I use AMC A-List and they emailed me that they cancelled the showings with enough time to re-buy new tickets.
And n the ending I was wondering if it was her ashes and not the dads, they showed her being cremated before that scene. Still weird that she would run the stuff over.
Oh lord, thanks for the warning about the grossness. Like give me fictional blood and guts or even vomit and I’ll be fine but you gotta draw the line somewhere 😂
I practically ran to the theater because I noticed the show times were getting pulled back pretty drastically by regal cinema. Had a terrible time dealing with one angsty employee which really soured my feelings going into the movie but I had such a fun time with the front room I left happier than going in.
The only way having the nursery in the front room makes sense is if they intended to sleep with the baby in the room in the first place like taking it in turns to do the night shift so the other gets a full nights rest however he never takes time off to care for the baby so it didn't make any sense. I would never take on an old lady that needs soo much care, especially if she gave me racist vibes and also the overstepping push the boundaries religious types absolutely not. There was a scene where Belinda is looking down the stairs, and I said "girl I woulda pushed that woman down those stairs by now!" Anyway, she felt my vibes and came to her senses. The house was gorgeous.
A quick search confirms that a vertical c-section is indeed a thing, and apparently has quite a few advantages over the horizontal option in certain instances, not so much in others. It's just not as commonplace.
My moms c section with me was vertical. And that was because i was for lack of a better term "cuddling" the umbilical cord. When they pulled me out my hand was holding the cord at my forehead. 😂😊
This new set up looks incredible Sarah! I will wait for streaming for this movie. Actually I will just wait for streaming for all of them at this point, especially with this economy. Except for The Substance, that movie looks incredible.
I came here to tell you I’ve never been more eager for you to review a movie as I am for Substance because my god was it something. I was watching the last 20 ish minutes thinking about how you would feel because i still don’t really know. Godspeed, comrade
Haven’t read the short story either, but looking at a summary on Wikipedia, looks like Solange was some homeless woman they offered to stay with them at their house after being inspired by a passage from Isaiah about taking in the homeless. I’m assuming this movie is an in name only adaptation that took the character names.
Hi Sarah! Fall and Winter are my 2 favourite seasons. Especially the movies round Halloween and Christmas. I love your ranking videos. I wonder which movie you like to watch, in which month? (If there are any movies you watch only once a year?)
My mom actually has a vertical scar from her first 3 C-sections. Granted all 3 of my siblings were born in Mexico so idk if that’s normal over there or not. But when she came to America and had me they had to cut vertical since she has 3 vertical C-sections before me.
I watched both Beetlejuice 2 and this movie. I’m also not a huge fan of Beetlejuice, but I recommend the sequel. It was so fun. Very good Fall/Halloween vibes, which makes me wonder why they released it so early and already announced that it will be available to stream in a few weeks... Dare I say, I liked it better than the first.
The only movie I'm ok with horror dream - hallucinations in is It Comes at Night because they were incredibly well incorporated and they actually impact the plot progression
There was maybe one other person in the theater with me on the opening night screening. And because Beetlejuice had a cool tin, I was there with a large popcorn. Since I had to watch a good chunk of the movie with my hand over my eyes because of the scatalogical scenes combined with the ensuing loss of appetite, I went home with well over half of the popcorn left. I was expecting something closer to Get Out, where there is the psychological thriller aspect, but there is an underlying supernatural element. Instead I got Bad Granma with a horror soundtrack. Overall, not a great experience.
I feel like they couldn't decide how they wanted the step-mother to act (is she in a cult? Is she an abusive manipulator?) and the end result of just me watching a senile elderly woman being lowkey abused for an hour and a half😭
Interesting to have such a strong opinion about Beetlejuice without seeing it. The Front Room wasn't great but the themes are incredible and timely in American racism.
So! I do have an answer for the vertical C section scar (I have not had any children but I am a Nurse!)! While VERY rare, vertical c sections do still happen in a very emergency situation often by a surgeon who is not used to doing c sections and is just trying to save baby and mom’s life asap!! Anyway, the more you know!❤
As someone who worked in assisted living facilities for a handful of years, and also lives in the south… this wasn’t a movie, it was a *documentary* - that’s the horror of it I think!
I also felt so weird about this movie! And my showing actually had a handful of people seeing it! But yeah it felt like I was just watching a doc of someone’s horrible situation with no real reason or resolution. I had the impression that it was gonna go in the religious/maternal identity horror route with the nods to themes and imagery but in the end it was kinda all for nothing except securing the will money. Idk, I’m glad I saw it cause I was hyped for Brandy but I wish she could have gotten a more grounded screenplay that didn’t rely on visceral grossness for the sake of shock value.
Vertical c-sections are a thing. They're only used for emergencies. My mom had to have one for me, because I was coming out feet first with my umbilical cord around my neck. Horizontal c-sections are for vaginal breeching issues or if the mother wants it to make it easier on her.
I was waiting for you to speak about this one 😂 I went in expecting a horror movie and…. WELLLLL… I agree with you on it just being not enjoyable and uncomfortable. I felt like there was no story at all and no progression. It was just one long collection of gross things happening.
yeahhhh i reallly hated this.... i made the mistake of sneaking taco bell into the theater and 😭😭 well like you, i had an expectation that this was going to be a fun religious horror movie and.... yeah. after the first big poop/pee scene i was ready to leave but i was hoping the film was going to go somewhere interesting but once there was the montage..... THE MONTAGE !!!..... i was so done 😭😭😭😭😭 it was the poop falling out of the diaper that really just was like okay... was not expecting this movies plot to be just poop but 😭😭😭😭
Omg I don’t like Beetlejuice either… I’m so glad I’m not alone in this since all my coworkers and my mom love it! Also omg maybe I’m a bad person but that woman would be kicked out on the street with the door locked behind her
This is a great review of The Front Room. I've never seen incontinence portrayed in a film. I was really surprised that so many people were really, really bothered by the poop. I mean--it was A LOT of poop. But, I've seen much more graphic blood and guts in horror--I thought this was pretty tame. Maybe because the audience is more used to disembowelment than bowel movements? Or maybe the movie hit a larger fear-the fear of getting older and becoming incontinent? Adult incontinence products take up half an aisle at the pharmacy--so it's a fairly common ailment. It's hard to believe it took the husband so long to buy the adult absorbency pads (diapers) for her.
Before the 90s they used to split moms down the middle. My mom has that scar down her stomach. I'm so glad they changed it... Also glad they stopped encouraging c-sections
8:12 absolutely not! My son is disabled with special needs like let me put that out there first of all, but I don’t even want him in a different room 90% of the time when he was a baby. I literally slept next to him all the time he was napping he was napping in the room with me somewhere. He’s and it’s still even hard to be away. You just worry lol
I was actually born by C-section and they cut my mom vertically it was back in the 80s they did that before they started doing it vertically now it's better to do it down under so that it's hidden more and more safe
I think everyone missed the key points of this movie. She wanted to push Brandy out and be the mother over her family. By doing so, she intentionally drove Brandy crazy in order to tempt her to kill her so that her spirit could live on in Brandy’s body. This is why at the end Brandy was so happy and kept smiling (the same smile Solange would have) The baby finally gotten quiet and was able to feed for Brandy after she kill Solange because Brandy was Solange.
Would love to see a video ranking folk horror. Also a vid on where to get physical media online. I have no used CD stores near me, they are all getting rid of physical media. Our local FYE stopped getting new stock. 🤬
Im glad to hear about the poop thing, I was thinking about watching it on theaters and that would have made me need to leave 😅 Also, not everyone gets paternity leave or has the ability to get a caregiver post birth... so I cant fault the story for that, and there are husbands who leave their pregnant partner floundering while pregnant. Thats not unheard of. And vertical c sections do exist.
So I just finished watching this movie about 30 minutes ago, and I just hated it. I wanted to enjoy it, but things like Brandy never taking her husbands concerns seriously, and him never communicating those concerns well, at all, generally their communication throughout. In the beginning she's waiting in the car, and he comes to the window to talk to her. She expresses that she's concerned about her pregnancy, and that she's worried about the baby surviving, and his response was "I love you." Like, bro, she just told you she's afraid of losing the baby, and THAT is how you choose to respond? But my biggest gripes, beyond being frustrated the entire runtime by the old woman and their responses to her, was the cult, and magic aspect the entire movie has been building, is just hand waved away. You remember that surgical wound she had, that magically disappeared after the cult got all handsy with her? Not even addressed later! The old lady's motivation for culty shit that happens, her "influence on others", the radio turning on by itself, the baby crying when the fish-cross necklace was too far away, ALL of that and more, forgotten, and swept under the rug, like none of it happened. I was starting to think that the old woman wanted to put her soul in to the fetus, and be able to live life again from infancy, after driving Brandy insane enough to kill her old body. But nah, life's great for the couple now that the old harpy is dead. The end. For fuck's sake...
Honestly I expected the movie to be...well...shit. Didn't expect literal shit to be involved but here we are. Going by the trailer alone, I was thinking "hmmm...I don't have high hopes for this." I couldn't tell if this was meant to be a horror comedy or a badly played out horror movie that looks like a comedy. Then again, I sometimes wonder the same thing about other horror movies. Side note, I love Beetlejuice. I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of the movie but I love the character. Mostly cause he's played by Michael Keaton but also he's just so wacky and creepy! I did enjoy the sequel. Again, mostly for Michael Keaton but also I liked the story.
I remember watching mother in theater and knowing I would never be watching it again. Thanks for the heads up this movie has that same vibe, I think I’ll pass😂
as someone who loved mother! and loves films that make you feel bad and really feel the horror and disgust of it i think i really might enjoy it, thing is i have huuuuge issues with body fluids so yeah idk if i'll handle that, by the way do you consider watching and making a video on Blink Twice that just came out ? i head it was good
Ive nwver had ppd, but i didnt think the mon had it either, as she was having hallucinations before birth as well. That she was overly stressed and tired from taking care of two babies (and grandma😂), no doubt made it harder.

one thing i will say about making bad decisions in horror movies is that we need to keep in mind that the characters don’t know they’re in a horror. in real life we never expect something bad to happen to us so we’re not as careful as we would be if we knew we were about to be in a horror film.
I'm not a horror fan for this reason. I cannot remove myself from the stupidity and it drives me insane. I'm rational to a fault but it's saved me from a lot of possibly catastrophic situations. 'No, I'm not gonna do that. It feels off' is something I say almost daily lmao
Wow I never thought about it this way!
@@CaulkMongler exactly! stress makes you do stupid things
It’s like you read my mind, down to the Mother! comparison.
Haven’t heard many horror creators meantion emetophobia, so thank you first off!! I really can’t understand films that have that much bodily fluids though, most people don’t want to be that sort of uncomfortable watching a movie 😅 huge difference between icky and horrified
Ya THIS film should have been called "Nope" instead of Jordan Peele's film.
😅
I saw The Front Room at its premiere and I have been WAITING for people to see it so we can discuss
Edit: they ARE too passive in my experience but since I felt so uncomfortable I gave it a higher ranking
The actress who played the old lady did a great job and was entertaining . Very scary for people that fear, having to take of their elderly relatives.
i’m watching this on my lunch break and hearing you say “there is too much POOP in this movie” made me choke 😭
The movie ended with her being pregnant again with twins. I thought they alluded to her having a hysterectomy with the vertical incision.
@@757Princess Thanks for that insight. Yeah, that's what it made me think of as well.
Yea that's scary, I'm on the same boat
With a 20 screen theater, they can do that. But when there is a theater with less than 10 screens and one movie is selling almost no tickets and a second movie is selling out on multiple screens ...
@@tomleonard830 thank you! had no idea! i tend to go to bigger cinema places cause those are the ones closer to me! thanks for the info 🫡
This movie gives a whole new meaning to saying "what a shitty movie"
I just want Brandy to be in a good movie again :(
Her comeback with an A24 flick felt so perfect too 😢
It’s funny you say it’s so unbelievable (I agree) but there are politicians suggesting grandparents to help with kids. Just pointing out our experiences are not necessarily the only ones. Some people do this madness. C section scar was old school. My mom had it.
I live for your reviews omg also thanks for mentioning bodily fluids cause I can't do that in movies especially poop...
3:17 that’s how i felt about Mother!. god the anxiety.
omg i typed that before i got to the part where you brought it up 😂
My husband got zero paternity leave.
I have had them cancel showtimes before too, when I was the only one who bought tickets - well used my AMC A-List credit to see it free.
Ur not alone girl, I’ve never cared much for Beetlejuice!!
I had to do the thing where you hold your hand up to block your view of part of the screen on multiple occasions.
This could have been a Lifetime movie.
A weird movie indeed but I did enjoy Brandy and Kathryn Hunters performances
You're not alone on Beetlejuice. I LOVED it as a child, couldn't care less now.
Not that I had extremely high hopes for this movie in anyway but dang …😂😂😂😂there was so potential!! . All I got was sh*t LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY
Dare I say, I liked it better than the first.
same i just watched it and i definitely liked it a little better than the first. i was having a blast watching it in an empty theater!
Saw this last night. Left the theater very confused and grossed out 😳🤮
Interesting to have such a strong opinion about Beetlejuice without seeing it.
Agreed! This movie didnt scare me. Solange isn't that bad compared to the things Ive seen in healthcare.
I completely loved it because i saw it as a comedy 😅
Horizontal c-sections are for vaginal breeching issues or if the mother wants it to make it easier on her.
when i saw uncut gems, it made me so anxious i wanted to leave the theater. the sound design was nails on a chalkboard for me that it was unbearable
uncut jaaammms (i have not seen this movie)
THE MONTAGE !!!..... i was so done 😭😭😭😭😭 it was the poop falling out of the diaper that really just was like okay...
was not expecting this movies plot to be just poop but 😭😭😭😭
I’m sorry TACO BELL while watching this movie is diabolical
I found this movie boring too. The husband was a lawyer but he was a DA - it's one of the lowest paid kinds of lawyers.
Before the 90s they used to split moms down the middle. My mom has that scar down her stomach. I'm so glad they changed it... Also glad they stopped encouraging c-sections
Fun fact, that old lady was Cleopatra's faithful helper Charmion in Rome. Beautiful portrayal.
With A24, Brandy, AND the Eggers name attached, I admittedly had an unfair level of expectation for this movie...
It reminded me more of Rosemary's Baby
I was eating my popcorn when she threw up a bit and I laughed. I was like lovely. 😅 i kept eating though. I have a strong stomach.
Sounds like a definite "skip it".
Im glad to hear about the poop thing, I was thinking about watching it on theaters and that would have made me need to leave 😅
Also, not everyone gets paternity leave or has the ability to get a caregiver post birth... so I cant fault the story for that, and there are husbands who leave their pregnant partner floundering while pregnant. Thats not unheard of. And vertical c sections do exist.
Actually, I live in NJ and did not get paternity leave. I took a week off but we had to plan to put money aside for it.
The only reason I didn’t walk out was because my theatre was a vibe.
as someone who loved mother! and loves films that make you feel bad and really feel the horror and disgust of it i think i really might enjoy it, thing is i have huuuuge issues with body fluids so yeah idk if i'll handle that, by the way do you consider watching and making a video on Blink Twice that just came out ? i head it was good
Tbh I'm not sure Sarah will watch Blink Twice based on the trigger warnings I've heard about the movie.
I remember I was in the theater and when they said her name was fern and Solange insulted it, I was like 😧
I'll definitely check it out on streaming, lol.
There were some streaming scenes in there as well unfortunately.
A few bits made me proper laugh + rewind tho... 😂😂
Ive nwver had ppd, but i didnt think the mon had it either, as she was having hallucinations before birth as well. That she was overly stressed and tired from taking care of two babies (and grandma😂), no doubt made it harder.
