Drop Dead Fred was my first exposure to Rik Mayall, and based on THAT film, I thought he was one of the worst actors I'd ever seen. And when you watch a movie solely because the gorgeous Phoebe Cates was in it, and she keeps getting interrupted by THIS cretin, the film definitely deserves the title of Worst Film of the Year.
And years afterwards, I finally got to see The Young Ones (which is NOT an "MTV show," Gene!) and The New Statesman, and I really became a fan of his. Mayall is a very funny man with a very distinct sense of humor. Indeed, New Statesman created the perfect politician-you-love-to-hate in its protagonist Alan B'Stard, but there is always something Mayall brings to the character that makes you root for him. There was a lot more to Mayall than this stinkburger Drop Dead Fred, and it's truly a shame we lost him so early.

Gene hated Don't Tell Mom... but marginally liked Hudson Hawk. He was really not on his A-game this day.

The only one of these I've seen is Highlander II, and it definitely belongs on the "worst" list. It's hilarious how they constantly edit and tinker with the movie when it gets released on DVD and Blu-Ray, as if cutting out the references to the planet Zeist and instead saying those scenes were on Earth "a long time ago" were going to make the movie any better.

I had to watch Shout as I find S&E's reviews intriguing. Apparently we share the same views: the film's plot is too good to be true and predictable. S&E got it right here.

While I agree with just about all of these films being stinkers I still think Don't Tell Mom the Baby sitters dead was a good movie and shouldn't be on the list with these others. I don't know who in the world ever thought Wooden Allen was a sex symbol.

I agree with you about Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. It was silly and kind of unrealistic, but those kids learned valuable lessons - to not be lazy, become responsible, and pursue interests.

There really are a lot of terrible movies in 91. I don't think there were any as good as how bad some of these very worst were.

  • @kali3665

Nothing But Trouble should have been better. It had an interesting concept and good actors. It should have been a parody of the "Old Dark House in Transylvania" school of film, and they just couldn't pull it off.
And we know how much of a misfire Highlander II was - not even Highlander fans are fans of THIS one. And, let's face it, the "Renegade Cut" didn't really improve much. Sean Connery's presence had "I'm doing this because my contract forced me to come back" all over it. You know, like he appears throughout Diamonds are Forever.

I've had a few shitty jobs in my life, jobs I really hated, jobs that were low-paying, over-worked like a bastard, back-breaking physically and mentally draining and soul-sucking jobs., so whenever I hear these guys whine about how they have to sit through shitty movies, I want to say "Fuck off! Your job is easy compared to actual hard work!" But then once in a while a movie like Stepping Out comes along, and I end up saluting them for enduring it because I know that I could never do so. Good God that thing looks horrible. I dont think I've ever heard of it til watching this episode just now.

They were 100% wrong about Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. They were 100% right about Hudson Hawk and Highlander 2. They were 50% wrong about Nothing but Trouble.
Don't Tell Mom is just a frothy kids' comedy with a sweet teen romance subplot, and the performances save it.
HH is just awful and the less said about it, the better.
Five hundred years from now, film scholars will still be puzzled as to how the whole Highlander franchise could have been kicked off by the sparkly turd that is H2.
Nothing but Trouble rode in on the "surreal comedy/supernatural comedy/sci-fi comedy" trend that started with Ghostbusters and then exploded with Back to the Future 1, 2, 3, Bill & Ted and then Beetlejuice. Comedies with weird elements were all the rage in the late '80s-early '90s and most of them were utter failures (both critically and financially), but I thought NBT was slightly better than the average loser (it was not as great as Freaked or Peter Jackson's Meet the Feebles, but better than Meet the Hollowheads or Garbage Pail Kids: the Movie [which wins the boobyprize of being the worst movie ever made]). I have a lot of affection for NBT, because of the talent involved and because it's just weird enough to hold one's interest. It charms you into liking it because of the little touches they threw in.
