    So I've never played any Final Fantasy game before. The most I've ever interacted with it is whenever the characters popped up in Kingdom Hearts. Now I do know some of the bigger moments in the original game mostly from them showing up in every "Top 10" list ever created. So having some knowledge was useful coming into this game, but not knowing was also surprisingly a benefit. There were moments that shocked me, terrified me, made me laugh, made me cry. I found myself talking out loud in response to certain things that characters said or did, because I genuinely felt like these people were real and that I was with them on this adventure. So as a complete newcomer to the legacy that is FF 7...this is one of my favorite games that I have ever had the privilege to play

    • @silv3r77
      @silv3r77 4 года назад +24

      It's incredibly well-made. Most of the criticism seems to come from people who wanted this to be the full game instead of just Midgard or people who played the original and refuse to give this a try because it's just Midgard. But my God if you just sit and play this game with an open mind, you will enjoy every minute of it.

      Adil Messi I was told you can skip every cutscene that is not from the original game and not miss anything important
      How do you defend hours of filler and fetch quests? Mediocrity, I swear I know this type of game just from seeing it and hearing about it and I don’t like them. Button mashers suck and there are already far better fighting games than this will be... I will play sekiro if I want a fighting game.
      You can like the game though, I don’t have to play it but it would have been so much better to get a superior version of the game that is already considered one of the greatest rpgs of all time.
      I really don’t see why it’s not possible to have both. A reimagining and an upgraded remaster of the original.
      Curious if they made both of them Which do you think would people be playing in ten years?

    • @silv3r77
      @silv3r77 4 года назад +8

      @@asdfghjkllkjhgfdsa8725 I'll tell you what I told the first reply. Did you play it? And I don't know about skipping skipping cutscenes I never honestly tried it due to them being really good. And that's true, except towards the end you want to see every cutscene cuz it's pretty important. But most of em are story cutscenes with some fan service for those who already know the story. Filler is part of every RPG game. And it's really not as button mashing as it looks, as the game progresses it becomes a lot more than attacking and defending. It's basically the same combat as FF13, but more modern. People keep comparing this Remake to the original game, which isn't fair because this is just Midgard, and it's way better than the original Midgard. Like I said man, you'll never really know if you'll like the game until you play it. Did you at least try the demo?

    • @asdfghjkllkjhgfdsa8725
      @asdfghjkllkjhgfdsa8725 4 года назад +1

      Adil Messi
      I do not doubt that the story is great. I’ve not heard one person say it isn’t except for what I mentioned early which is that there are giant useless boring sections of the game. I’m asking you honestly.
      no I haven’t played it. I’m not speaking from direct experience. Ive played a lot of games. I don’t need to play every game to know if I would like it.
      My guess could completely be wrong. The game could be great. The mechanics could be top notch and completely surprise me but honestly whether or not they are doesn’t even matter to me.
      why can we not get a larger improved version of what worked so well in the first place AND the remake they actually made.
      Separately I mean
      There are so many variations and iterations of final fantasy and rpgs In general and if this is one you love that’s great there’s something for everyone and everyone’s experience individual.
      There isn’t anything wrong with both existing especially when both would be profitable.
      You say this plays like ff13. Well I’m trying to play 7 bro not 13.
      The fact that it is only midgar is not an excuse to not compare it to the original it is a big problem and one of the main reasons I would never buy it. Did they not charge full price for both games? It should come complete. I will never buy episodic games. If they were both full price games why does the new one get a pass to make you buy multiple games for the complete story. There is no excuse.

      Yeah I personally liked that part as well ,because of the banter between the two. The part with the lift needing three lights being turned off was bad...now that was bullshit padding, no defending that one. "Oh this lift needs three lights that act as mini suns to be turned off first"...

I felt the characters were a bit more developed, I grew attached a lot more to the side characters. all the characters I find more likable. I never used Barret originally, but in here, I'd have him in everyone of my comps. even Cloud, I was never that much of a fan of his character, but I found him much more likable in this, more humanized.

    Actually felt the longer parts with Aerith allowed the build up of a relationship between her and Cloud which you don't get to explore as much in the original. But mechanically, it was pretty dull, even if I thought it worked thematically and for the storyline as a whole.
    To be fair, anything that allows me to stay in that world, and explore it more, I appreciated, even if it was a bit clunky at times...

      Atom Manhattan I wouldn’t say there’s very little combat, there’s two whole separate colosseum areas and a bunch of bosses (& mini-bosses). The main draw of FFVII was always the story though, and playing the game it definitely does feel like they put that first and foremost (like the drawn out scene with Aerith OP was describing).

      Perry the thing I like the most is that it’s new player friendly, story wise. They walk everyone from point A to point B without letting previous players of FF7 have an advantage. It gives the new players a greater sense of WTF when cloud has his flashbacks/premonitions since they don’t actually explore all of them in the game.

      I know a little bit about the ending, but I'm almost there myself, so I'll see how I enjoy the new developments with that. So far though I've enjoyed it. I said this exact same thing. The "padding" people are talking about is from rose-tinted view points. They were literally character and world building. I hear a lot of complaints about filler or fluff, but I'm nearly finished and I just don't feel the same. For example, the segment where you're walking on the rooftops was not a lot to do gameplay wise but after all the action and intensity that came before it was such a nice time to breath as Cloud and Aerith got know each other and I spent a lot of time in that segment just looking around. Looking up at the plate from below, looking out to the wall and beyond Midgar, looking at the detail of the church and surroundings. I feel like people are playing this game in some sort of hurry when they game encourages you to pace yourself and take it all in at times. Even the side quests are pretty quick and character building for Cloud and often times there's callbacks to those moments and payoffs later down the road. Even the most menial tasks don't really feel out of place and they give you a task while you explore the space and take it in as you reconcile the livelihood of the people with the actions of Avalanche. Without it the cities and the people in them feel more hollow and you don't feel the cost of your actions as much. If people just slow down and enjoy the game instead of counting the gameplay hours, then it's a far more enjoyable experience

      Mr. Potassium Loved everything about its retelling of the original segments, but the only issue is in-depth background stories never really happened inside of Midgar. You won’t be able to learn about what makes the characters tick or even know who some characters are until the next game comes out as a lot of things are fleshed out almost immediately after they leave Midgar (most notably Sephiroths connection with Cloud and Tifa) and as characters visit their birthplaces. Note that the Dementor looking things are a new addition to the game.

      I hated the ending, especially due to the fact that it was created to make make the original game no longer canon, you literally kill the canon of the first game, and the character deaths are completely undone, taking away a lot of the drama and stakes in the story. We all know that Aerith will no longer be killed since this tike Cloud knows it will happen, and Aerith has decided to go against that fate.

    • @VetNovice
      @VetNovice 4 года назад +3

      Kinda have to agree that like. A lot of the pacing and music doesn't fit the original in terms of feeling lonely or sad. It's overall more upbright and triumphant. I don't mind those things, but when I thought of the Remake as a replacement piece for the original, it tasted sour. The remixes don't follow the character themes, and I think Nomura blew his load too early on the story with Sephiroth and Aerith to feel that progressive tension / build up through indirect contact.
      As a standalone game it's a 9/10, as remake 7/10 for me because it fucks up with a lot of the reasons fans fell in love with the characters and story originally.

      @Orcaluv26 Because it's ensemble cast. There's alot of themes of dualitity and juxposition with many aspects of the game. As far as Kefka being a copy of the Joker....you either don't know jack about the Joker or Kefka. In 1993 , the Joker wasn't being written the way Kefka was. The Killing Joke was originally a noncanon story, as it contradicted many elements of the current DC status quo. (such as Batgirl was retired already by that point.) Kefka was made as an antithesis of all other previous JRPG villains. They were generally very stotic , and typically were calm and collected as they dismantled heroes and advance their plans. You see this with Gobez and Exdeath as they are very japanese with how they write their characters including villains. Kefka was let's do the opposite of everything they do to the extreme. He might seem cliche as many Jrpgs are like him now, but he first of his kind.
      Aside from being dressed like a Clown, the Joker and Kefka have very different personalities.Kefka just kills because he enjoys it and has zero mercy. He enjoys watching people suffer, while the Joker actually has some morales at different points in his history and likes to be sporting with his prey. (He attacked the Red Skull in a Batman/Captain America crossover when he learned he was a nazi. He said he might be a criminal, but he's still an american.) The Joker actually feels bad about what he does from time to time.(He didn't resist arrest after he killed Commissioner Gordan's wife.) Kefka does not. His ability to feel empathy was lost when they experimented on him . He believes all humans are as broken as he is, and wants to see humans fail to prove it. He spends a year binge watching human suffering in his tower because he doesn't think people will ever resist him. He doesn't take the time to hone his godlike powers and still fights the returners as a powerful wizard rather than a god of magic. You see him get fired up to destroy something, but prior to that he just sat and waited till the world would collapse upon itself because his beliefs require it to. He's a nihilist but if he was purely one he wouldn't care if others actually felt like that or not as nothing should matter then. He contradicts himself as like many things in FF 6 it's all about duality and juxposition.
      Over time the Joker because more like Kefka, but Kefka was not a copy paste of the Joker. The Joker wasn't always a guy with knives who racked up large body counts. He was about showmanship and amusing himself. Any death that happened were merely a sideeffect of his crazy experiments and stunts not the primary goal. At some point most batman villains became serial killers, and they had saddle him with a extreme no kill policy as the only way to explain why all them are still breathing.

    I remember when I played Crisis Core before jumping into FFVII and I was starting to get truly confused at some “flashes” in the original game until they made more sense. I didn’t know if I gained something by playing those in that order or lost something as there is an inherent confusion within the story if the original, but it wasn’t meant to be confusing to the player, only the characters. Perhaps, I was with Cloud from the beginning and was able to see what really was going on before anyone else.

    Awesome review by the way. Liked and subscribed. I’ve played this game over 40 times over the last two decades. To watch something that means so much to you be filled with so much padding and omitting important plot points.....?...so frustrating. If they could release a three disc game in 1997 there is no reason that they couldn’t have released a multiple disc game in 2020. In the time when we games as long and expansive as “the Witcher”, size is just an excuse. But hey, maybe two games. I could live with that. Stop the first somewhere in Junon. So many parts are so booooring in this game.
    And what’s the deal with the kingdom hearts flying Harry Potter dementors!!?! Why change the damn story??!
    There are two camps for the most part. If you’ve never played the original you would and should love this fame (except for the excessive padding). If you’ve played the original, love it and made it a big part of your childhood and life like I have then you’ll feel betrayed. Cheers

      Sabisan They had to and were going to make changes bro, if they just did a 1:1 retelling of the story that would also mean we’d get all the weirdness and inconsistencies along with it and that just wouldn’t be up to 2020 AAA standards. A few examples: How tf did Rufus Shinra survive getting blasted by Diamond Weapon? Or the fact that you don’t find out Sephiroth isn’t an Ancient unless you randomly go back to Nibelheim and find a letter on the ground. Or how Vincent & Yuffie are supposedly in the Northern Crater & evacuating Midgar at the end simultaneously.

      1. Why take out some of the most beloved parts of midgar?
      2. Why suck excessive, long, boring pudding to the game? The train graveyard that used to be a fun part of the original is now made into a horrible two and a half hour ordeal?!?! It sucks.
      3. Why change the story sooo much to a story that’s already beloved by millions?! Why the damn arbiters of faith ghosts? Why am I fighting sephiroth in the end of Midgard when he’s one of the last in the fucking original?!
      4. No shinra cell scene?! Which is quite literally the most memorable and important scene?
      There was no reason these things should have been changed because of inconsistencies or weirdness like you said

    Actually, My Thoughts: If there was a Final Fantasy 7 show, the first Season would be Midgar...and the Nibelheim flashback, and hopefully the last shot of the first Season would be everyone leaving the Kalm hotel room, the camera moving over to Red XIII/Nanaki, and him saying his line "Wow - what a fascinating story!" (or equivalent) and then cutting to black.
    Then, that way, S1Finale will establish where the Story is going to go forward from, whereas S2E1 can have the iconic "..Did...Sephiroth do this..?!" moment, so we can see first-hand what the heroes are up against (and adds just enough intrigue that people first tuning in with S2E1 will be like "Damn, I should go watch S1!").
    Having said that I'm fine with where they left off, and solid review!

    Personally, I love the Whispers. I have no idea why everybody hates them so much. If you take a deeper look at them, they don't even change anything in the original story. They enhance it a great deal though. Take a look at them with me and see for yourself:
    - Whispers are arbiters of fate, right? They intervene whenever someone is trying to take an action different than the one that the planet deems to be a proper cause of events. Easy concept enough. With tons of planet's inner entities and gods like Omega and Chaos (from Dirge of Cerberus) or Minerva (from Crisis Core) they are also hardly anything new. We've always known that the Planet in FFVII has a consciousness of sorts, that is split among multitude of divine entities. Whispers are simply another addition to the pantheon of FFVII.
    - What's I like about them, is their interactions with the characters. They are truly neutral spectators for the most part. Gently pushing characters in proper directions or blocking their way when they are on the wrong path. But when the sh*t really goes down, and events that will shape the future of the planet take place they transform into a crazy tornado of fate and eventually into gigantic "Weapon" like monsters that are acting out the will of the planet. It's all well established within existing lore, and makes sens on basic levels. No problems here, right?
    - Another thing that's brilliant about them, is their interactions with Sephiroth. You can see that Whispers can not alter Sephiroth's actions, because he (and Jenova) are already a part of the Planet's pantheon as well. Unlike other characters, Sephiroth can just slap around the Whispers and tell them to go to hell whenever he likes. So they go around him to alter the events by influcing other characters. They take away Hojo when he is about to reveal Cloud's past, so that Cloud wouldn't learn to the truth and kept on his journey to defeat Sephiroth. They save Barret when Sephiroth tries to kill him, so that he could help Cloud in his journey againt him. It's all really, really well done guys. You gotta admit Whispers are far from random. Their actions make perfect sens in the context of the story.
    - The final showdown between "Weapons" created by Whispers and Cloud's part I guess is one of two reasons why some people really hate the ending. Again, it's hard to imagine why. It's not like Whispers are a sudden out of the blue boss fight. They were established throughout the game, and when Cloud's part finally wants to challenge them to be masters of their own fate rather than being pushed around by them, it makes perfect sens in every way, and creates a natural final fight for the game, that's been due from the start when they first came around. It makes sens why Cloud and others would want to challenge them. The answer to save the planet can't come from within the planet while it's been infected with Jenova's head and Sephiroth. It has to come from the free actions of the people who want to save it. So standing their ground was a good choice for the party, the fight makes sens, and defeating Whisper gods, freeing the world from their influence so that they can chase Sephiroth their way from now on gives you a massive relief, because you know that during the next game they won't intervene anymore.
    - Another thing that people dislike, I guess, is how the defeat of the Whisper gods made a shockwave through time, basically altering past events whenever Whispers intervened. We see that the death of Biggs was undone in another timeline, which we saw, was originally caused by Whispers (Whispers stand in Cloud's way when he tries to get to Biggs until the moment when they knew saving him was impossible. They made sure he died). Okay, so Biggs is not dead in another reality. Is that a problem? No. We don't even know what Square is going to do with that reality. It doesn't matter to us, because it didn't alter the main story at all. Biggs, Jessie and Wedge are all dead in the main storyline, just like in the original. Same goes for Zack. We see that Zack was actually kept from entering Midgar by Whispers, who made a barrier between him and the city upon his arrival with Cloud. Probably, they also contributed to Zack losing the fight against Shinra army, making sure he dies, so that Cloud could take on his persona, which would eventually (in Planet's mind) lead to the defeat of Sephiroth and his Meteor. But without the Whispers, Zack survives - again, in another timeline. Does that hurt Zack's legacy? No it doesn't. In the main story, Zack still died to save Cloud. This simply creates an alternative timeline, where Zack can be happy with Aerith and Cloud can be happy with Tifa. Zack deserves that ending in my opinion, he is a great character! If Square wants to create a game in alternative timeline, to continue the adventures of Zack, I will be the first to buy and play them. I can't see why would anyone think that's a problem for the main story. It's not. Zack is still DEAD. We see it clearly when they go past Aerith, who as an ancient can somewhat sens the time split, and Zack being alive someplace else... But the timelines do not overlapp at all. Zack and Cloud go past real time Cloud and nothing happens. They are not there. The story proceeds exactly like in he original. The only thing that's changed, is that we can still hope for future Zack's stories. Is that so bad....? WHY?
    FFVII Remake is a 10/10 game. It showed great respect for the story and characters of the original, enhancing the plot and lore of FFVII without really changing it. Everything, from the combat system and music and dialogues all the way to graphics and character arcs is almost perfect in this game. Yes, the game might be a bit confusing at the end for newcomers. Does this mean the game sucks now? Give me a break guys. FFVII Remake is...
    AWESOMETACULAR!

      Because they didn't change anything in the story (but defeating them hints that they will, which for me is probably worse) yet they are very distracting and take away a lot from very key moments.
      The first encounter with Aerith was so relaxing and calm, it felt like being in a sanctuary after all the hectic action from before, but now is all rushed and they make the turks seem not as important as they were before because of them. The same as the moments before you got to the support column section.
      They just undervalue the dramatic beats that the story had before.

      @QUEENDOM Which also is quite the slap in the face to some of us. We waited so long for this remake and now they're like "Well, look at you, you won't know what you got comin" -- I'm not sure if I'm 100% onboard with this.

    My fav FF is 8. But 2nd is absolutely 7. I had an absolute blast playing this remake, and the ending left me in awe and very excited, but not gonna lie I am a bit worried if they go full KH with this, the ending was kinda meta.

    This is definitely on my list, but thanks to one of your older videos, I'm currently playing through Final Fantasy VI (or III) on SNES and going to start Chrono Trigger next on DS.
