Today, the prison population is more than double what it was in 1999, but staffing has dropped by almost ¼. The workload for screws is huge these days, hence the reduction in entry requirements. The result is a smaller workforce, with fewer skills, far less experience, constantly being asked to do more with less, and morale is rock bottom. They can't retain staff, and the ones who are retained get disheartened quickly with the endless cycles of violence and corruption. Every prison used to be staffed by gruff men, who weren't shy of a dust up if the circumstances demanded it, nor were they liable to take any nonsense from the convicts. Today we see 18 year old girls as screws, 8 stone wet through with no _life_ experience, never mind prison officer experience, and they're expected to be put on the landings, often alone, amongst hundreds of men, and somehow were supposed to believe they are capable of upholding order and discipline in the midst of all this.
Tbh I wouldn't fancy trying to confiscate someone's drugs if I was a prison officer, probably just get targeted for it which would make your job unbearable and how they survive then?
In some jails, they would just take everyone in the yard to the digger and before they are allowed in they will have everyone locked up who is out of their cells for pantry or cleaning before actually taking the lads outside, "inside the wings, so they can get a clear run to the digger, so nothing can be passed. It's all done for them and some people just get comfortable in jail and it becomes normal to them and they dont like it outside in the real world. sad but true.

Thats not true, I don't think. They have two types of dog, sniffer dog and guard/attack dogs. The sniffer dogs are normally Labradors, the guard dogs are Alsatians. They use the Alsatians to do patrols of the external walls etc. Totally different roles
