  • 5.26.2011: Dan Smalley and his son Matt Smalley talks about the small manufacturing operation they and co-partner Dennis Ryan, run. Among other things they make are Gibbs salt water fishing lures at their Cumberland factory. Gibbs Lures were first popularized on the Cape Cod Canal after World War II, by Stan Gibbs. Smalley bought the rights to make the lures again a few years ago. The gear remains a tackle box mainstay.

Not a fan... they don't honor their products. Bought one of their lures and the paint chipped without ever casting it. Called customer service and the women was very rude. So I never bothered sending it back.

That's great that the wooden part of the plug is made in the U.S. What about the rest of the plug? Those Mustad hooks are made in China. And I imagine the rest of the hardware is also produced in China. So "part of the plug is US manufactured, the rest is made with parts made in another country. Purchasing those parts in another country is putting tool and die workers out of business here in the US. Its like the automobile industry, they are assembled in the US, the expensive part of the car is made elsewhere, again no tooling, stamping, etc or very little in the US. The steel is Chinese. Give me a break, these plugs were probably 100% manufactured here in the US back in the day. But not now. But like they say, never let the facts get in the way of a good story. Have a nice day.

that's nit-picking. the paint could be manufactured "who-knows-where" as well. the important part though, is that they are actually painted in the USA though, THAT is what they are implying. same with the hooks, they are assembled locally, not sent away to some cheap-labour country to be done.

all the hardware could be made here in the US .. eagle claw hooks are still made in the USA all of the hardware could be easily sourced from american sources .even the wire .. if you want 100% american made it can be obtained .. of course you will likely pay a little more .. maybe 10% premium .. but over all us suppliers still have to stay competitive..obviously he is in tool and die union lol .. we all have lost jobs to cheap overseas labor .. its no secret. Buts its not likely to change .. and in our kids lifetimes.. is likely we will lose more here and abroad to robotics and Autonomous sources .. its a fact .. manufacturing is slowly being changed that the human side of it is done away with .. no benefits, sick leave, robots don't get drunk and stoned on the way to work .. even the computer biz I work in jobs are less and less for the tech .. If I had to choose a career path .. it would be chemical engineering or medicine for the next 50 years. everyone wants cheap junk .. and thats what they get lol

The only us made hooksninknow of are owner and I'm not paying double for a hook that is a 50%50% chance of it bending on a 1lb porgy. Instead of bitching about sombody trying to keep a buisness in the us bitch at the people who keep leaving

By the way eagle claw hooks are utter garbage, I had a 4x strong 6/0 bend straight from a schoolie striper. He couldn't make 7lbs of drag pull but he could bend their shit hook. I tried a different package with a different lot number and same thing happend. They're trash
